Days of our Lives viewers were given a real treat today with an episode devoted to the Horton family.
It was a trip down memory lane for Days fans with the story about how young Tom (Zach Chyz) and Alice Horton (Sydney K. Smith) bought the family home that has been the center of the show.
The beginning of the Horton Christmas ornaments tradition was also revealed, with Days of our Lives viewers learning the ornaments survived the fire.
Doug (Bill Hayes), Julie (Susan Seaforth Hayes), and Maggie (Susan Seaforth Hayes) filled Leo (Greg Rikaart) on the history of the Horton family, which ended up being the perfect way to honor Bill.
As Monsters and Critics previously reported, the legendary actor died in January, but Bill will be airing as Doug for months because of Days’ filming schedule.

Earlier this month, the famed Horton house was set ablaze by a mystery man, leaving the family reeling after decades of history was destroyed instantly. To help viewers better grasp the legacy of the property and the Horton family to the overall canvas, “Days of our Lives” has cast actors Zach Chyz and Sydney Kathrann Smith to play a young Tom and Alice Horton (played by the late Macdonald Carey and Frances Reid).
The special stand-alone episode airs on Wednesday, February 21 and sees members of the Horton clan walk down memory lane with newly created scenes showcasing Tom and Alice’s epic romance, the early beginnings of the Horton family home, and much more.

Chad's been having a rough time lately. Ever since Stephanie brought up marriage, he's struggled again with the feeling that he's betraying Abigail by moving on. After losing Stephanie, Chad turned to Julie for comfort on Days of Our Lives during the week of 1-01-24.
These scenes were amazing -- Susan Seaforth Hayes is a Days legend for a reason, and Julie stepped effortlessly into Alice Horton's shoes to support Chad.
But Chad made a comment that underscored how much the writers have diluted the idea of death and grief through a silly plot device that only happens in Salem.
Chad told Julie that instead of time making things easier for him, they made them more challenging. But he didn't just say he missed Abigail. He said he found it difficult to believe she wasn't still alive.
Even after all this time, I still keep thinking Abigail's alive,...

Add another candle to that cake!
Days of Our Lives turned 57, and Doug and Julie celebrated the anniversary with a nod to the series' first storyline in 1965.
There was plenty of drama on Days of Our Lives during the week of 11-07-22, but the tribute to the show's long history was the best part.
Days of Our Lives' anniversary happened to fall on Election Day, so the celebration was intermixed with the drama over at Paulina's campaign headquarters.
While Abe and Paulina anxiously waited for results, Doug embarrassed Julie by telling Shawn about her teenage shoplifting escapade.
View Slideshow: Days of Our Lives: 13 Things That Only Happen in Salem
The set-up belonged on a sitcom. Julie had again been accused of shoplifting because she thought Doug paid for her mink stole, and Doug thought she paid for it.
Once that was straightened out, Doug couldn't help but mention that 57 years ago to the day,...

It was a big week for Days with the revelation that Clyde (James Read) killed Abigail (Marci Miller) and stabbed Sonny (Zach Tinker).
The impact of Abigail’s death and Clyde as her killer will be felt in Salem for a long time, though.
Now that the who stabbed Sonny and killed Abigail story has wrapped up, it will allow for new storylines to emerge.
Love drama will be the name of the game in Salem as the show gears up for November sweeps.
There’s also a big return and a new scandal hitting Salem.

It’s A Very Salem Christmas for Days of Our Lives fans, but if you’re looking to go spoiler-free until you watch it, then I suggest you save this review for later.
First off, this Days of Our Lives holiday special is on Peacock Premium, not the free version (at least not yet.)
Being a big fan of Beyond Salem and hoping we get more of these soapy special events, I sprung for the annual Peacock Premium membership. (The yearly seemed like the better deal.)
I’m not telling anyone else what to buy. There are so many streaming services now that they can be overwhelming and expensive. I will say I haven’t regretted this purchase as Peacock Premium has lots of old TV favorites to go along with movies and new content.
(Case in point, my husband is already binging The Rockford Files, I’m eyeing Miami Vice,...

They did it to Bo. They did it to Adrienne. And now they've done it to Laura.
Days of Our Lives keeps bringing back legacy characters only to kill them off quickly.
It's senseless, it's disrespectful, and we have only one thing to say about it: Stop.
Laura Horton was far from my favorite character, but she deserved better than what she got.
She's Jennifer's mother, who has spent her life in and out of mental institutions, only to be felled by a fatal shove toward the sharp edge of a desk.
Now Jennifer has no parents left, and for what? It's almost guaranteed that it won't lead to a story about a beloved Salem character struggling to redefine herself now that her parents are gone.
It won't lead to anything, most likely, other than more fighting between Abigail and Gwen until one day Abigail decides that she's going to...

The revolving door for who plays Abigail continued to spin as Kate Mansi left and Marci Miller returned. Much to Belle's horror, Jan Spears found a friend in Claire, Xander and Philip battled over office space and Ben fantasized about his future with Ciara.

Sportsgirl: I prefer Marci as Abigail. Her portrayal is more mature & shows more depth. I can see her as a professional so much more than Kate's style.

If you've begun watching Days of Our Lives recently, you've probably found Julie's recent health scare to be riveting television.
It is far from the first strong Doug/Julie storyline.
Julie and Doug are one of Salem's oldest couples, having first met in 1970, and the actors have been married in real life for almost as long as they've been on the show.
Throughout the years, Doug and Julie have had their ups and downs.
Like most soap supercouples, they've been married and divorced several times.
But now they've settled down and are a stable, older couple that provides hope, encouragement, and love to the younger generation.
Check out our latest Days of Our Lives Classic Couple Spotlight and share your favorite Julie/Doug memory in the comments.

November 8, 2019 marks the 55th anniversary of Days of Our Lives.
Days began as a half-hour family-based soap opera in 1965. If Alice Horton were alive today, she might not be happy with what her family is doing now, but she would still welcome them with open arms.
Read on for our tribute to NBC's longest-running (and sole surviving) soap opera.
Family has always been the foundation for Days of Our Lives, and let's hope that continues!
The series kicked off in 1965 with Alice lamenting that she had an empty nest, hoping that her children and grandchildren would still need her.

Who else needed tissues for Doug and Julie's trip down memory lane?
Like most Days of Our Lives couples, they have had their share of break-ups and make-ups, emerging all the stronger for it. They are a leftover from the days when Days of Our Lives was about love, romance, and family.
And that is why Doug and Julie dealing with her serious and possible fatal heart disease was one of the best stories on Days of Our Lives during the week of 9-30-2019.
For almost 55 years, Days of Our Lives has most strongly resonated with viewers when it focuses on families coming together to support one another in good times and bad.
High-stakes, realistic, and relatable stories capture viewers' attention and don't let go, and Doug and Julie's seeming swan song is a strong example of that.
I had envisioned a romantic dinner and dancing but I don't have the strength.

Sarah considered terminated her pregnancy, both Kate and Julie’s lives hung in the balance, and Jordan made a surprise return to Salem.
Our TV Fanatics Jack Ori and Christine Orlando are joined by Kathy and Silvananoir1 from MyHourglass a Days of Our Lives fan forum to debate Jordan’s sanity, Sarah’s choices, Dr. Shah’s surprise seat on the crazy train and if Julie and Kate will survive!
What do you think the odds are that Jordan is actually sane?
Jack: Not very high. The current writers seem to love the "mental illness leads to violence" trope, plus Jordan is still convinced that Ciara needs to be protected from Ben.
And Marlena more or less rolled her eyes at the idea of Jordan having been released, too.
Kathy: I think Jordan still has some serious issues. It will be interesting to hear why she was discharged so soon.

Whatever you felt about this couple, they got a beautiful farewell -- and no gratuitous deaths, either!
The wedding was rushed so that the couple could hightail it out of Salem, but it was nothing unusual for this soap.
Salem weddings are always put together in a matter of minutes and guests are never unavailable for a last-second ceremony.
Besides, Kate Mansi (Abigail) was only available for a limited period of time, so the writers had to do the best they could to wrap Abby's story up properly.

Days of Our Lives recently got renewed for a record-breaking 55th season.
Despite some hiccups, NBC's longest-running soap is going strong, but it could be even better.
Across the globe, Australia's Neighbours will turn 34 in March 2019, and while the two soaps reflect two vastly different cultures, there are some things Neighbours does well that Days of Our Lives could learn from.
One significant difference between the two soaps is that Neighbours is far more focused on family relationships.
That is a shame, as Days of Our Lives' backbone used to be the relationship between Alice Horton and her large extended family. Days is starting to get back to its roots in this area, but there's more work to be done.
Family members are too often missing or absent from storylines on Days. For example, where was Jennifer when Jj was struggling with suicidal feelings at the end of...

Days of Our Lives has had no shortage of disappointing storylines, but when it gets it right, it really gets it right.
The show's 53rd anniversary on 11-8-18 mostly got it right.
Sure, there was some Gabi nonsense and Chad turned into his father for no apparent reason, but there was also plenty of romance, a wedding combined with some heartfelt family goodbyes, and a surprise replay of a message from the late Frances Reid, allowing Alice Horton herself to participate in the anniversary.
What a beautiful surprise! I watched the Frances Reid clip three times and it brought tears to my eyes every time.
For me, Alice Horton was Days for a very long time. Reid's death in 2010 left a gaping hole that has never quite been filled, and Alice and her husband Tom were the backbone of the show.
No matter what crazy things were going on...

Days of Our Lives' Caroline Brady was a fixture in Salem for 35 years.
First debuting in 1983, Caroline was in some ways the antithesis of soft-spoken, genteel Alice Horton. She was a fiery redhead who wasn't afraid to speak her mind to her four children and was the head of a mainly blue-collar family that soon became best friends (and sometimes lovers!) with the founding family of Salem.

One of the things that most drew me to Days of Our Lives back in the late 1980s was the close-knit Horton family and especially its matriarch.
Alice Horton was always there with homemade donuts, smiles, and lots of love. She was always there for everyone in town to turn to, was gentle yet unafraid to speak up when one of her many younger relatives was going down a wrong path, and sometimes provided comic relief.
Her legacy is a lot to live up to, and Days of Our Lives hasn't been the same since Frances Reid passed away in real life, prompting an on-air funeral for Alice in 2010.
Nowadays, the sense of family and love that has always been the backbone of this show seems to be missing.
There's more than enough worried parents and angry children in Salem, but there is no loving, wise older person to hold the families together,...

Abigail stalked around in the middle of the night dressed like Gabi, Eric broke up Jennifer’s Valentine’s Day date, and Jj proposed to Lani with Alice Horton’s ring!
Our TV Fanatics Jack Ori and Christine Orlando are joined by Doolfan4life from MyHourglass a Days of Our Lives fan forum to debate Eli’s lack of backbone, Abigail’s weird behavior, Eric’s donut fixation and more from this week in Salem.
Does Gabi have the right to be angry with Abigail for telling the police she said she wanted to kill Andre?
Doolfan4life: Yes, she has the right as we all have a right to feel anything. Also if Abby really believes Gabi is innocent and that it was a figure of speech then why bother to mention it if not to intentionally get the police to look at her?
Jack: This is a hard one.
