Austin, TX – Mondo is excited to announce the new book release of Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of the American Genre Film Archive, available for saleon November 16, 2021 from author Lars Nilsen, editor Kier-La Janisse, along with several genre enthusiast contributors. Nilsen, a longtime Alamo Drafthouse film programmer and now at Austin Film Society, and Janisse, genre scholar and author (House of Psychotic Women), programmer and documentary filmmaker (Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror), have written a definitive guide to exploitation cinema.
At the dawn of this century, a scrappy one-screen theater in Austin, Texas became ground zero for a revolution in film exhibition. That cinema, the Alamo Drafthouse, took the seemingly foolhardy step of offering free screenings of exploitation and horror movies that had quite literally been consigned to the scrap heap. The idea began in the sleep-deprived mind of its co-founder, Tim League,...

I hit adolescence right around the turn o’ the ‘80s, and it was a very strange time for kids’ movies, or at least movies that creatives thought kids would like – and after the success of the Clint Eastwood megahit Every Which Way but Loose (1978), that usually meant a film with some sort of simian featured in it. After that (plus a sequel), we were treated to Going Ape (’81), a Tony Danza starrer that featured orangutans just like Clint’s, and of course TV had Bj and the Bear (’78-’81). There are others, but let’s be clear: most films that stop cold to feature an animal aren’t worth the droppings they leave behind. This brings us to Carnival Magic (1983), one of B-movie legend Al Adamson’s final features and his first of two stabs at a family film. Leave it to Severin Kids’ line to spring it on an unsuspecting Blu-ray audience.

A certain kind of cinephile bemoans the fact that some movies have never made the jump from DVD to Blu-ray; another kind laments those that are only available on VHS. On the eve of the first-ever VHStival (which takes place this weekend and is exactly what it sounds like), the American Genre Film Archive and Alamo Drafthouse have announced a plan to preserve VHS-only movies. Agfa led the way in acquiring VHS masters from the Something Weird archive and a tape-to-digital transfer station for the project, and Alamo is releasing a VHS-themed board game called “Video Vortex: Analog Apocalypse” through Mondo next year.
“Up to this point, Agfa has focused on preserving movies that exist on 16mm or 35mm film prints,” Agfa director and Bleeding Skull founder Joe Ziemba said in a statement. “This is an expansion of that mission. Movies like Herencia Diabolica, a Mexican Child’S Play rip-off...

Yuletide Terror: Christmas Horror on Film and Television, the latest book by Canadian micro-publisher Spectacular Optical, offers a definitive, in-depth exploration of the history of these subversive film and television presentations that allow viewers to engage in different ways with the complicated cultural history of the Christmas season.

“This is disgusting.”
They say you can’t intentionally make a cult film, but you can certainly try. The Greasy Strangler tries very, very hard, and the result is a film that’s as unique as it is odd. We’ll have to wait a decade or so to see if the film is remembered as a cult favorite, but for now we can probably all agree that it’s a ridiculously absurd genre-bender guaranteed to have both fierce advocates and absolute detractors.
Keep reading to see what I heard on the commentary track for…
The Greasy Strangler (2016)
Commentators: Jim Hosking (director/co-writer), Michael St. Michaels (actor), Sky Elobar (actor)
1. The house was actually every bit as disgusting and smelly as it looks. “It’s a shame we don’t have a good shot of the black mold,” says Michaels.
2. Elobar says he gained roughly fifteen pounds for the role “on that belly there.”

Jason Eisner is one hell of a talented director who has made some of the most wonderfully demented films you will ever see. He started out making short films like ''Treevenge," and his first feature-length film was Hobo With A Shotgun. The filmmaker has found his next film project, and it’s perfect for him and his crazy style.
The film will be an adaptation of the comic book New York City Outlaws, which comes from Robert Huszar and Ken Landgraf. The story centers on “a group of vigilantes who join forces to rescue NYC from total anarchy during a prolonged police strike.”
There are only five issues of the comic book, which was published in 1984, and if you’re familiar with it, then you can tell it was inspired by The Warriors. The script for the film is being written by Bryan Connolly and Zack Carlson.

• Release Date: Available Now on Blu-ray/DVD combo pack
• Written By: Jerry Jones, Rudy Ray Moore
• Directed By: D’Urville Martin
• Starring: Rudy Ray Moore, D’Urville Martin, Jerry Jones, Lady Reed
Dolemite is a flick stacked to the rafters with “shouldn’t”s. A man of Rudy Ray Moore’s build shouldn’t be able to pull down the insane amounts of trim he does. A man that knows so very precious little about martial arts (R.R. Moore again) shouldn’t be attempting those high kicking moves. These people that are about as far away from being actual actors (with a few exceptions) as my house is from Venus shouldn’t be reading reams of dialogue. Actually, this whole production shouldn’t be entertaining or even watchable, but holy hell is it ever!!
The long and short of the tale is this: (maybe) pimp and club owner...

There are good movies, bad movies, and plenty of movies in between — and then there are movies like Dangerous Men. It’s a charmingly inept action/drama that’s utterly uninterested in predictability or following the norms of narrative film-making. Characters come and go, main plot points are dropped randomly while others are picked up, and it was filmed over two decades. Two decades for an 80 minute movie with zero narrative cohesion! It’s pretty magical in its own special way, and as the credits make clear, it’s all due to writer/director John S. Rad. Drafthouse Films helped reintroduce it to the world, and their Blu-ray/DVD release features interviews, a documentary on the film’s rebirth, and a fittingly funny and ridiculous commentary track. It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely for someone — and you know who you are. Keep reading to see what I heard on the Dangerous Men commentary. Dangerous Men...

Humankind’s collision with otherworldly life forms can make for unforgettable cinema.
This article will highlight the best of live-action human vs. alien films. The creatures may be from other planets or may be non-demonic entities from other dimensions.
Excluded from consideration were giant monster films as the diakaiju genre would make a great subject for separate articles.
Readers looking for “friendly alien” films such as The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), It Came from Outer Space (1953) and the comically overrated Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) are advised to keep watching the skies because they won’t find them here.
Film writing being the game of knowledge filtered through personal taste that it is, some readers’ subgenre favorites might not have made the list such as War of the Worlds (1953) and 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957).
Now let’s take a chronological look at the cinema’s best battles between Us and Them.

Something happened on September 27 that you should all know about. If you were at the Austin Film Society event "Our Dinner with the Danger Gods," you don't need me to tell you that it was a night for the ages. Those who witnessed it won't forget it. We welcomed a panel of some of the greatest stuntmen in the world to sit down at a table with no prepared material, eat steaks, drink whiskey and tell stories, jokes, lies, whatever. It was an event designed not only for the audience but for the legends themselves.
If you weren't at the event, our friend Brandon Grey filmed it, and it looks beautiful. Zack Carlson, who hosted the Danger Gods the previous evening at Fantastic Fest, and I moderated.

The concept behind the epic horror anthology film The ABCs of Death was inspired by the style of children's books, and the promo art even features the Grim Reaper helping a little tot turn the pages of a terrifying tome. So it's only natural that the film's producers Ant Timpson & Tim League would release a whimsical storybook to accompany the film... a storybook for grownups, that is. Based on the 26 films in the anthology, the 9" by 13.5" 56-page book sports original vintage-style artwork from acclaimed storybook illustrator Stephan Britt and Dr. Seuss-style text by author Zack Carlson; the creators say it will “entertain young and old alike with its hilarious, heartwarming tales of cannibalism, suicide, and life-or-death sex tournaments.” We're guessing the “young and old alike” part is targeted at extremely open-minded parents... but who are we kidding here? Our kids are horror kids! Limited to a run of 666 copies...

As the movie industry heads the way of the digital download, one of our oldest friends - the VHS tape - is becoming more and more collectible. Some people even get a bit obsessive about their collecting. Such is the case with Adjust Your Tracking: The Untold Story of the VHS Collector.

This year's SXSW Film Festival includes many movies with Austin connections, but perhaps none that can be considered so completely Austintacious as director Josh Johnson's labor of love, Rewind This! After three years of work alongside Christopher Palmer and Carolee Mitchell, the documentary about VHS premiered to a packed house at the Paramount on Monday.
Rewind This! is one of the most entertaining documentaries I've seen, detailing the birth and rise of home video recording technology in both VHS and Betamax formats and their impact on the filmmaking industry. Johnson, Palmer and Mitchell shot thousands of hours of footage with interview subjects like Lloyd Kaufman, Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), Charles Band, Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun) and Cassandra Peterson (Elvira), and cut the material down to a feature-length exploration that blends these among with many others into a single cohesive narrative voice.

Long-time Alamo Drafthouse programmers Zack Carlson and Lars Nilsen may be moving into the next chapter of their careers, but one project that you can expect these vanguards to continue to support is the nonprofit American Genre Film Archive (Agfa). Agfa board members and advisors include Alamo Drafthouse founders Tim and Karrie League as well as Nilsen and Carlson, Joe Ziemba, and Sam Prime, who oversees the operations and development of the archive.
On Sunday at 2 pm, Afga hosts a Reel One Party at Alamo Drafthouse Ritz. Periodic inspections are conducted on undocumented 35mm film prints contained in the archive by threading up several "reel ones" (which come in containers like the one at top), then watching the first 15-20 minutes to take note of opening credit information, overall condition of the film, and general plot information. Nobody knows what to expect and whether a film will be fun or a dud.

News that Lars Nilsen (pictured at top on left) is leaving his programmer position at Alamo Drafthouse was released today by Alamo Drafthouse. The news comes as no surprise to those closely familiar with the Drafthouse programming team, but it is still unwelcome news. Few businesses have a relationship so strong between their employees and customers as Alamo Drafthouse can boast, one that can truly be called a family. And in the case of Lars Nilsen, that relationship goes back to the earliest days at 4th and Colorado.
Coming on top of last week's departure of programmer Zack Carlson, this represents a major transition in the Drafthouse family with as-yet unknown effects. Zack and Lars were not just silent, behind-the-scenes programmers. Together, they have been the most public-facing representatives of the Drafthouse on a daily basis, and creators of feature programs like Weird Wednesday and Terror Tuesdays.

By all accounts, VHS will probably end up being the vinyl of the movie world. It wasn’t just a new way to watch movies, it was a revolutionary tool that profoundly changed the game. Major studios hated home video (and now rely on DVD/Blu-ray sales…), audiences relished discovering crazy stuff that had previously been out of reach, and the ease of it all was as simple as picking from a shelf-full of goodies. And a lot of crap. But if you picked something terrible, you’d usually just mock it with friends. So not a lot has changed since then. Except that VHS lives on only in the hearts of a smaller audience than it used to command. Fortunately, the folks at Ipf Productions and everyone who contributed to their KickStarter campaign have made a celebration of the format that delivered movies to our homes. Rewind This! is playing at SXSW in March, and...

A rock band who practice Tae kwon do and sing about the joys of friendship. Ninjas who move noisily between drug deals on speeding pocket rockets. Welcome to the dangerous world of Orlando, circa 1987, and the little film that found a second chance on eBay. Miami Connection opened and closed in central Florida in 1987, never to see public exposure again, but when an industrious Alamo Drafthouse employee bought a print online for $50 a legend was reborn. The film follows a group of friends who go to college during the day and rock out at night as the house-band for an Orlando nightclub. Their world is shattered though when they’re forced into a confrontation with a rival band, poorly dressed gang members and drug dealing, motorcycle riding ninjas. Let’s listen to some commentary! Miami Connection (1987) Commentators: Grandmaster Yk Kim (producer/co-writer/star), Joseph Diamond (c0-writer/star) and Zack Carlson (Alamo Drafthouse programmer and all-around swell...

Twenty-five years after its flop micro-release (mostly in Orlando), "Miami Connection" has finally found the cult worship it deserves following Alamo Drafthouse Cinema's programmer Zack Carlson rediscovery of the film on eBay. (Read more about that history here.) The film, which revolves around a martial arts rock band and their fight against a group of drug-dealing motorcycle ninjas, has already made appearances at various festivals and will now be rolled out across the country starting today. It currently has a B+ average on Criticwire. An exclusive (and uplifting) clip from the film can be found below.

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s the thing that will comfort you during the storm. In this case the storm is Hurricane Sandy, who is currently laying down a ravaging to our beloved readers on the East Coast. And the comforting is in the form of the eight best links of the day, all of which will lead you to great reads, listens, watches and otherwise marvelous, nerdy things to look at. 1. We begin this evening with a calculated takedown of the weekend’s biggest new movie, Cloud Atlas. For well over a week, I’ve been struggling to come to terms with my own feelings on the latest from Wachowski Starship. It’s complex, grande and full of moments that are worthy of awe. But it’s also a big mess. And Zach Baron at Grantland’s Cloud Atlas is an overscrambled mess article is perhaps the most adept explanation of the balance between...

Fascination with failure is nothing new in our culture. There is something reassuring about seeing other people make mistakes, particularly celebrities and people in positions of power. We like to see expensive blockbusters flop and we like to know that actors like Tom Cruise are human too. But that doesn't quite explain how bad movies can develop cult followings. Movies like Plan 9 from Outer Space, Troll 2 and The Room are generally seen as cinematic travesties, and yet they all have legions of fans who have watched them hundreds of times. You could say that these people like to feel smug and superior to these films, but something tells me that kind of enjoyment only goes so far. Zack Carlson, a programmer for the Alamo Drafthouse, recently wrote an editorial for Wired about movies that are so bad they're good. He puts forth the idea that there is no...

In 1987, an entrepreneur and martial arts expert named Grandmaster Y.K. Kim co-directed "Miami Connection," a film about "a martial arts rock band" whose members fight "a band of motorcycle ninjas who have tightened their grip on Florida's narcotics trade." This is real. There's a trailer and everything.
"Miami Connection" was released in an Orlando, Fla. movie theater and promptly booed off the screen.
Twenty-two years later, in 2009, an Alamo Drafthouse programmer named Zack Carlson found a 35mm print of "Miami Connection" on eBay and purchased it for $50. For the theater, it was money well spent: When "Miami Connection" was shown to audiences during a weekly Drafthouse series called "Weird Wednesday," it was immediately embraced. After securing distribution rights, Drafthouse films (the distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse) screened the film at the 2012 New York Asian Film Festival with Kim in attendance.
"From beginning to end, the audience cheered and laughed.

During my recent interview with Alamo Drafthouse programmer Zack Carlson, we spoke about the American Film Genre Archive (Afga) and some of the found films that volunteers that support this nonprofit have saved. One of those titles is the zany 1987 martial-arts film Miami Connection, directed by ninth-degree black belt/philosopher/author/inspirational speaker Grandmaster Y.K. Kim, seen above demonstrating his skills before the movie screened during Fantastic Fest. The story's plot revolves around the members of the synth-rock band Dragon Sound, adult orphans and martial artists who fight criminals -- especially hated ninjas -- in the streets and back alleys of Orlando, Florida.
The special screening at Fantastic Fest 2012 included demonstrations by Grandmaster Kim as well as a reunion of the band Dragon Sound. Attendees at the afterparty pumped their fists and chanted with the band, many of them wearing sleeveless Dragon Sound t-shirts. See more photos after the jump.

Home haunt documentary The American Scream premiered at Fantastic Fest 2012 to a sold-out audience, and the audience applause lasted longer in the initial screening than any other film I attended. Therefore it came as no surprise when the film won Best Picture in the Documentary category in the 2012 Fantastic Fest Awards -- read my review of this award-winning documentary that captured the audience and awards jury's hearts.
Several members of the cast and crew were in attendance and participated in a Q&A after the premiere, including director Michael Stephenson (Best Worst Movie) and film subject Manny Souza (pictured above). After the Q&A the audience was informed that due to a spill in the hallway, attendees would need to exit through an alternate route. Movie trailers are typically our first look at footage from upcoming films, and they can be an artform all on their own. "When you are scared, you are most alive. People need that -- they need to feel alive." -- Victor Bariteau, The American Scream
Before sharing my views of the haunted house documentary The American Scream, I must provide two disclaimers. First of all, I've known producer Zack Carlson for several years through his roles at Alamo Drafthouse, which we discussed in a recent interview. Second, I've been involved in a local haunt Scare for A Cure for several years, although not this year. As a haunter, I am more aware of the inner workings of a haunted house and was fortunate enough to have grown up during an era where haunted houses were as common as Christmas decorations in our community. We knew which houses had the scariest scenes and the best candy selection as we did our Halloween night lap around the neighborhood.

Of all the film experiences Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas has to offer, the most consistent and long-running are the weekly series Music Monday, Terror Tuesday, and Weird Wednesday. Zack Carlson and Lars Nilsen are the Alamo Drafthouse's "Cult and Culture" programmers behind the latter two, scouring the earth -- sometimes literally -- for unique and seldom seen 35mm prints to screen. These films could never be described as highbrow art, but have an appeal to film enthusiasts who want to see films that challenge the norm and are outside the comfort zone for mass appeal. I'll never forget the first time I saw Carnival Magic, nor the story about how Carlson secured a copy of a print. Watching that surreal movie with a Weird Wednesday audience is a memorable adventure worth experiencing.

Some favorite directors from Fantastic Fest past are returning and others are making their first appearance. I Luv Video!) or streaming online. Hurry now because you're losing days at this rate.
Fantastic Fest selection: The American Scream (dir. Michael Paul Stephenson)
Stephenson's previous film Best Worst Movie premiered at SXSW 2009, and documented the cult phenomenon Troll 2. The filmmaker's latest documentary stays in the same genre yet takes a look at three passionate haunted house enthusiasts as they prepare their home to scare the living hell out of those who walk through it.
