Moved from its usual December berth last year, the 12th Panama International Film Festival (Iff Panama) runs April 4-7, replete with new industry activities and double the number of films since its previous edition.
True to its mandate to serve as a showcase for Central American and Caribbean cinema, the festival’s program this year includes a bevy of acclaimed films from the region, including two Panamanian Indigenous-themed features, “Bila Burba” and “God is a Woman.”
Recent years has seen the growing international recognition of pics from the region, with Nelson Carlo de los Santos becoming the first Dominican – and first Latin American – filmmaker to snag the best director Silver Bear at the Berlinale for his drama, “Pepe.”
Costa Rican director Antonella Sudasassi Furniss’ sophomore feature, “Memories of a Burning Body,” clinched the Audience Award for best fiction film in the Panorama section of the A-list German festival.
Both are screening at Iff Panama.

These last few years the Criterion Channel have made October viewing much easier to prioritize, and in the spirit of their ’70s and ’80s horror series we’ve graduated to––you guessed it––”’90s Horror.” A couple of obvious classics stand with cult favorites and more unknown entities (When a Stranger Calls Back and Def By Temptation are new to me). Three more series continue the trend: “Technothrillers” does what it says on the tin, courtesy the likes of eXistenZ and Demonlover; “Art-House Horror” is precisely the kind of place to host Cure, Suspiria, Onibaba; and “Pre-Code Horror” is a black-and-white dream. Phantom of the Paradise, Unfriended, and John Brahm’s The Lodger are added elsewhere.

San Sebastian’s pix-in-post showcases have often launched standout movies, such as Sebastian Lelio’s “Gloria,” winner of the Films in Progress Award at the 2012 edition, plus notable directors, such as Jayro Bustamante, whose praised debut “Ixcanul” played at the festival in rough cut in 2015 before winning the Alfred Bauer prize for innovation at 2016’s Berlinale, breaking out handsome sales.
San Sebastian’s 2023 Co-Production Forum registers two trends: Films that are genre pics or enrol genre tropes or genre blend; an exploration of identity.
Thus year’s San Sebastian Wip Latam skews in another direction. “The films and stories are very grounded in reality, either by there hybrid formal move between fiction and non-fiction, their singular take on daily matters or the very social issues they address,” Javier Martín, San Sebastian Latin American delegate, told LatAmCinema.com.

Indeed, in the last four years, San Sebastian has awarded its top prize, the Golden Shell, to either directorial debut titles or second features, a sure sign that it takes its role as a promoter of rising talent seriously.
This year’s edition, which takes place September 22-30, is no different, with the official competition having 11 films from first or second-time directors including: Raven Jackson’s debut All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, which premiered in Sundance; Isabel Herguera’s animation Sultana’s Dream; Noah Pritzker’s second feature Ex-Husbands,...

Pier-Philippe Chevigny with Anne-Katrin Titze on Luc Dardenne and Jean-Pierre Dardenne: “They are my true heroes and Abbas Kiarostami.” And on Jayro Bustamante: “He has a production company in Guatemala City and they actually held auditions for us.”
Ariane (Ariane Castellanos) sees a crying man on a bus and is told by Michèle (Eve Duranceau) to take care of it. So starts Pier-Philippe Chevigny’s gripping Richelieu. Ariane is beginning her new job as an interpreter of French and Spanish and is traveling to a corn facility in the Richelieu region of Quebec with migrant workers on board. Upon arrival she is greeted by her boss Stéphane (Marc-André Grondin) and is told that “any fool” could do her job.

The work environment is abominable. Steadily, the minutiae of injustice mounts. The seasonal workers cannot join the union but have to pay dues.

Taking us from the streets of New York to the poppy fields of Mexico, the jungles of Central America, and the White House, The Border explodes the myths of the drug war through the intertwining narratives of characters on both sides of the Mexican-American border: an obsessive Mexican-American DEA agent, a young boxing promoter who inherits a drug empire, a jaded teenager who rises to power in the world of high class escorts, and an Irish kid from the streets of Hell’s kitchen who becomes a ruthless,...

Despite what the Academy Awards and Sight and Sound polls would have us believe, horror is and has always been the lifeblood of cinema. During the pandemic, when theaters across the country were closed, it was an indie horror movie that had fans showing up to drive-ins and keeping the box office alive. When productions across the globe had closed up shop and gone home to await further instructions, it was a horror filmmaker who found a way to make a movie entirely over Zoom and gave movie lovers something to talk about. Horror is one of the only genres to never wane in popularity or profitability throughout the history of cinema, spawning an entire subculture of conventions, events, and avenues for merchandising that thrive year-round.
From the earliest days of the streaming wars, horror has been on the frontlines in the form of the AMC-owned streaming service, Shudder.

A pilot has been ordered by FX for “The Border,” announced FX’s president of entertainment, Nick Grad, on Wednesday.
Based on Don Winslow’s award-winning, critically acclaimed Border trilogy, the story is said to “explore America’s failed 50-year war on drugs through the intertwining narratives of characters on both sides of the Mexican-American border: an obsessive Mexican-American DEA agent, a young boxing promoter who inherits a drug empire, a jaded teenager who rises to power in the world of high class escorts, and an Irish kid from the streets of Hell’s kitchen who becomes a ruthless, international hitman”, per the network. “
The New York Times called the Cartel Trilogy “a hybrid of The Godfather and War and Peace” and “this generation’s defining work of American mass-culture storytelling on the border.” FX nabbed the rights to the trilogy in 2019.

Created and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities made its debut on the Netflix streaming service last month, the first season of the show consisting of eight episodes that were directed by the likes of Vincenzo Natali (Cube), Guillermo Navarro (Godfather of Harlem), David Prior (The Empty Man), Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night), Keith Thomas (The Vigil), Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), Panos Cosmatos (Mandy), and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook). Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities hasn’t yet been renewed for another season, but del Toro has a list of directors he wants to work with on season 2 if it happens. During an interview with IndieWire, he revealed some of the names that are on that list.
Del Toro said, “I have a list. For example, we tried to get Jayro Bustamente before and he couldn’t because of Covid.

Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities" hasn't been renewed just yet, but the cabinet's curator already has some great ideas about who could show up to direct episodes of the second season. Series creator, writer, and host del Toro spoke with IndieWire about the Netflix horror anthology that gave eight filmmakers the spotlight in its first season, and revealed some of the directors he hopes to invite for the series' second outing.
Among the filmmaker's dream collaborators? "La Llorona" writer-director Jayro Bustamante; "Tigers are Not Afraid" filmmaker and writer Issa López; actor, producer, and "Depraved" writer-director Larry Fessenden; and Boots Riley, who wrote and directed the dark satirical comedy "Sorry to Bother You." Some members of this impressive group are apparently closer to a done deal than a wishlist, as Del Toro also revealed that two of the four already had episodes in the works before other projects came up.

With human justice absent in the awful political bloodshed in Central America, Guatemalan director Jayro Bustamente finds payback in cinematic fantasy. A crooked government exonerates a genocidal general, but his estate is besieged around the clock by Mayan-Ixil Indio protesters. Into the house comes a new maid — a tiny young woman who may nevertheless wield supernatural powers. The moody art-horror show is as delicate as The Innocents or a Val Lewton chiller — horror once again becomes an excellent means to address political evil. Slow and deliberate, it reverberates with horror history without copying the classics.

Seattle-based MindRiot Entertainment is teaming up with Panama’s Hypatia Films, an associate producer of Claire Denis’ Cannes Grand Prix winner “Stars at Noon,” on the groundbreaking documentary, “In Search of Atlantis,” based on the findings of Seattle native Dr. Jason Rubin who has used deductive reasoning, the writings of philosopher Plato and the most advanced satellite sonar imagery to pinpoint the location of the fabled lost island of Atlantis.
According to MindRiot co-founder and chief creative officer Jonathan Keasey, Dr. Rubin passed on other Hollywood suitors as he liked MindRiot’s approach to the content and the fact that it had marshalled the support of multiple universities, including deep sea explorer Don Walsh, the honorary president of the Explorers Club, and even European authorities, given the maritime jurisdiction of Rubin’s site in the Atlantic Ocean.
Denis is among the constellation of world talent descending on the 70th San Sebastian Film Festival.

Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Cure is one of the very few movies that made me stop breathing. I was in the middle of a full house for a screening at Asian Film Festival of Dallas. My blood ran cold. In following one of their biggest months in some time, the Criterion Collection have perhaps outdone themselves. Hard not to get a jolt of excitement seeing Lost Highway arrive in 4K, surely to look astonishing, or Night of the Living Dead making the same upgrade. But maybe the best film of the lot is Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure, recently restored and here boasting a new conversation between the director and his former student, Ryusuke Hamaguchi. Great cover to boot.
Rounding out the month are classics old and new—Arsenic and Old Lace, Eve’s Bayou, and Jayro Bustamante’s 2019 debut La Llorona.

Launched by “El Chapo” producer Camila Jiménez and its creator Silvana Aguirre, L.A.-based The Immigrant, in which Fremantle has a 25% stake, has hired Oscar-nominated filmmaker Javier Fesser to direct its upcoming Spanish series “Custodia Repartida” (“Shared Custody”), a dramatic comedy from María Mínguez (“Vivir dos veces”) and Juanjo Moscardó (“Amor en Polvo”).
The company recently expanded its Mexican team with the appointment of Claudia Valdez as director of physical production. Valdez brings more than two decades of experience from across film and television to The Immigrant and will be critical as the studio enters production on multiple television projects.
One such project, “Shared Custody,” is a dramatic comedy unraveling after the fallout of separation between two parents, and an examination of that increasingly common dynamic in the modern world. Many families cannot afford to live alone, because often those with money have little time and those who do have time frequently struggle financially.

Every now and then, a country emerges from decades of oppression and a film industry, once squashed lest it tell truths uncomfortable for the powers that be, begins to blossom with new, unfettered voices. The country of the moment is Guatemala, which is being honored at this year’s Guadalajara International Film Festival, and has begun to make itself known around the world largely through the success of Jayro Bustamante’s 2021 Golden Globe nominee and Venice Days winner “La Llorona” and Cesar Diaz’s “Nuestras Madres,” which won both the Camera d’Or and the Sacd Critics Week prizes at Cannes 2019.
“I’ve noticed a new generation of filmmakers emerging that are dying to tell their stories after a long bout of silence,” says Justin Lerner, an American who has made Guatemala his second home and directed the Guadalajara competition entry “Cadejo Blanco.”

Eighth annual celebration of Ibero-American audiovisual industry returned to in-person event in Madrid.
Colombia dominated the Platino Awards – the Ibero-American equivalent of the Oscars – as Memories Of My Father, a drama about a public health activist murdered in the 1980s, took five awards on Sunday night (October 3) while Michel Franco’s New Order emerged empty-handed from the Madrid ceremony.
Memories Of My Father won best film and art direction and earned three awards for Spaniards as Fernando Trueba triumphed in the directing category, his brother David Trueba won for best screenplay and Javier Camara took the best actor prize for...

With Guatemala as this year’s guest country of honor at the 36th Guadalajara Int’l Film Festival (Ficg), the festival will be screening more than a dozen films from this tiny Central American country, including one of its recent standouts, Justin Lerner’s “Cadejo Blanco.” The female-driven crime drama stages its world premiere Oct. 3 at the fest where it competes in the official Ibero-American Features section.
Although born in Boston, Lerner’s ties with Guatemala run deep, where he even proposed to his French-American wife at the edge of a volcano. More importantly, he helped with the creation of a film school there in 2016 where he was its first film professor. It was while teaching there when one of his students introduced him to the picturesque Caribbean coastal town of Puerto Barrios where “Cadejo Blanco” mainly takes place.

An in-person Guadalajara Film Festival (Ficg), which has moved its traditional spring dates to the fall, runs Oct. 1-9 this year. It opens with Dennis Villeneuve’s “Dune,” following its splash in Venice, and closes with the North American premiere of the first two episodes of Netflix’s animated series “Maya and the Three” from Mexico’s Jorge Gutiérrez.
Given the ongoing pandemic that is still hampering some travel, the festival expects fewer participants. Speaking to Variety in mid-September, festival director Estrella Araiza said that at that moment the Festival had about 300 confirmed participants while it normally had as many as 1,500.
Cinemas will be at 50% capacity at the festival even though Mexico has seen most cinemas opening at 100% capacity. “We want to adhere to the strictest protocols to keep our guests safe,” Araiza noted.
Some activities, such as the Masterclasses, will be available online. A novelty this year, the live...
