Exclusive: Alyssa Milano (Brazen), Virginia Madsen (Sideways), Gina Torres (9-1-1: Lone Star) and Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) have signed on for roles in the feature-length anthology Give Me an A, which links together 15 short films, in response to the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade.
The film currently in post-production will have been completed within two months from the date of Roe’s overturning — which eliminated the longstanding constitutional right to abortion — in an effort to ensure this is a response and not a delayed reaction. The creators, cast and crew have made a significant effort to expedite the process in order to start a conversation with audiences about the importance of bodily autonomy and address the dysfunction of a democracy that is not protecting the needs of a majority of the population. Last year, we heard that the filmmaking duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were “returning to their DIY indie origins” with a new project called Something in the Dirt. Now a teaser trailer for Something in the Dirt has arrived online – and along with that comes the information that the movie is going to receive a theatrical release on November 4th!
Benson and Moorhead directed Something in the Dirt from a script written by Benson. The duo also produced the film and star in it… and the movie was actually filmed in their apartments during the pandemic shutdown. Here’s the story they’re telling with this one:
Two new neighbors witness what seems to be a supernatural event in one of their apartments. At first terrified, they realize that documenting this phenomenon could provide them the lives they’ve always dreamed of.

There are many filmmaking workshops, hosted by institutions ranging from Sundance to Ifp, that allow emerging directors to assess their next projects with a group of mentors. Shudder Labs falls in line with that tradition, but comes equipped with a special focus: The new creative retreat is exclusively designed for horror directors. Hosted by Shudder, the horror streaming platform owned by AMC Networks, Shudder Labs was run by former journalist and curator Sam Zimmerman and took place June 11–15 at the Mohonk Mountain House.
Seven filmmakers participated in the lab, taking guidance from mentors that included Sarah Adina Smith (“Buster’s Mal Heart”), Larry Fessenden (director, “The Last Winter”) and Lindsay Peters (Director of the Frontieres International Co-Production Market). The Masters-in-Residence were Mike Flanagan (director, “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” “Hush,” the upcoming Stephen King adaption “Gerald’s Game”) and Nick Antosca (screenwriter, “Channel Zero,” “Hannibal,” “The Forest”).

Since its launch in November 2014, IFC’s Comedy Crib has served as a home for high-quality web series, some of which have caught our attention. Now, Comedy Crib has announced the shows that will make up its fall slate, and it has assembled a strong lineup. Leading off is Suburban Sons, a series produced by Above Average that stars Lamorne Morris of New Girl fame.
In Suburban Sons, Morris plays one of four dads who together make up a gang of suburban gangsters. However, instead of running a dangerous criminal syndicate, the Suburban Sons spend their time making sure local lawns are well-maintained. In the premiere episode, this process involves torturing a resistant neighbor by over-cooking hamburgers and sharing Breaking Bad spoilers.

There are many web series about finding love, but the show in today's Indie Spotlight is all about escaping it. Megan Rosati is the creator of 52 Ways To Break Up, a web series that offers exactly what it says on the title card. 52 Ways To Break Up is separated into short vignettes; out of the five release so far, none run longer than three-and-a-half minutes. The word "break up" is used liberally. Sometimes, it refers to escaping a bad hookup, which can be done through laughter, heavy drinking, or quiet footsteps. In more heartfelt episodes, it stands for something bigger. Check out this episode, for instance, which co-stars Chris Dinh of Wong Fu Productions: Regular readers of our blog may recognize Rosati's name from her appearances in Anna Akana's short films, where she shows up regularly. In her own work, she's adopted a much quieter, more personal tone, and it works well.

Anna Akana has released the third of 12 short films she plans to release in 2014, and it excels just as much as her first two. It's titled Emergency Call, and it's a 150-second slasher film. Unlike Akana's first two short films, Emergency Call doesn't delve into mental health issues, but it features the same dark tone that is quickly becoming a staple of Akana's directorial work. This time, she has some help from frequent collaborator Megan Rosati, who joins her behind the camera. Rosati, who appeared in both of Akana's previous shorts, also wrote Emergency Call and stars as one of its two leads. Before I say any more, take two-and-a-half minutes out of your day to check Emergency Call out
