The rain stayed away from Santa Monica Beach on Sunday (February 25) as Past Lives was named best film and Celine Song best director at the 39th annual Spirit Awards.
While the legacy studio and streamer contenders have dominated much of the big-ticket awards shows this season like Saturday night’s SAG Awards, last weekend’s Baftas, the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, this was a good opportunity for the Oscar-nominated A24 romance and Song to earn gongs for a film which has done well among critics groups since its world premiere at Sundance just over one year ago.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Comedians, actors and best friends Kate Berlant and John Early have been making beautifully weird comedy together for a little over a decade. On June 24, they bring their most ambitious sketch project yet to Peacock. Would It Kill You To Laugh? gives the duo a full hour to mine for awkward laughs while exploring some very surreal premises. The show also features a running bit in which the two play former sitcom stars who reunite after 30 years of not speaking for a very uncomfortable primetime interview special hosted by Meredith Vieira. The bit, it turns out, is inspired by a very real situation involving the stars of Three’s Company.

Two years after First Cow, which we collectively named our favorite film of 2020, Kelly Reichardt returns with a work like a line drawing: neat, lean, evocative. Showing Up is about art, how art is made, and the people who use their time to make it. It stars Michelle Williams, an actress who has always been at home to the quiet rhythms of Reichardt’s filmmaking, appearing over the years as a down-on-her-luck drifter in Wendy and Lucy (2008), a settler on the wagon trail in Meek’s Cutoff (2011), and as a woman burdened by a belittling man in the director’s anthology Certain Women (2016).
In Showing Up, Williams plays Lizzie, a sculptor who is neither famous nor struggling, but somewhere in-between: an undefined lower-middle-class of artist that cinema tends to overlook. Lizzie is hard-working, passionate about her craft, protective of it, and rather good at what she does (foot-high clay sculptures of...

One thing the new mockumentary “Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein” does quite well is prove that there are perks to appearing on a streaming service’s signature hit.
David Harbour, the stolid and familiar presence from Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” is given the opportunity to cut loose here with a broad, loopy half-hour that feels a bit like one long comedy sketch, with all that implies. He’s evidently having a great deal of fun playing his fictional late father, a pompous theater actor who acted in his own play about Dr. Frankenstein and recorded the piece for posterity. But even half an hour is a generous amount of time to give to a story that feels, well, sketchy, with reversals whose pile-up is more novel than truly funny and with jokes that feel underwritten at best.
Harbour also plays himself in the present day, working to uncover more...

"My father had a compulsion to court disaster..." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a comedy short, mockumentary special titled Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein, starring actor David Harbour from Hellboy and "Stranger Things". In the film, Harbour delves into the enigmatic history of his legendary acting family, as he examines his father's legacy and role in a made-for-tv play called – of course – "Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein". With appearances by Alfred Molina, Kate Berlant, Heather Lawless, Michael Lerner, and more special guests, Harbour explores the depths of his family's acting lineage to gain insight into his father's legacy -- all in 28-minutes. This looks super kooky, creative, and hilarious; it's cool to see Netflix developing comedic ideas like this. More mockumentaries! Enjoy this. Here's the first trailer for Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein, on Netflix's YouTube: When actor David Harbour finds lost footage of his father's disastrous televised stage play of a literary classic,...

If you ever thought that daytime lifestyle shows needed more of Jane Krakowski belting, then Amy Sedaris has some wonderful news for you.
truTV released the first look at Sedaris’ upcoming domestic design show satire “At Home with Amy Sedaris” on Thursday, and it’s the kind of surreal you’d expect from a show with her name on it.
At first, what seems like a simple Martha Stewart-esque dissection of crafts materials and interior sprucing becomes a full-fledged musical number with a handy mnemonic for using glue on different surfaces. Krakowski even gets to show off her Broadway chops in the process.

If you’ve ever wanted to hear Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First?” or the detention scenes from The Breakfast Club re-created by the voices of animated TV characters, well: (a) That's an odd coincidence, and (b) we have both, and more. Voice actors Alex Borstein (Family Guy), John Roberts and Larry Murphy (Bob's Burgers), Heather Lawless (Stone Quackers), and Keith and Kenny Lucas (Lucas Bros. Moving Company) joined the Vulture Festival's Animated Voices panel on Saturday and read famous film and TV scenes in the style of their beloved characters. Turns out there is a way to make Fifty Shades of Grey sound even less sexy.

Schneider. Lynskey. Sedaris. Weston. Sold! Variety reports that indie film MVPs Paul Schneider, Melanie Lynskey, Amy Sedaris, and Celia Weston have all joined the cast of Angus MacLachlan‘s feature debut, Goodbye to All That. Additionally, other newly-announced cast members include Heather Lawless, Heather Graham, Anna Camp, and Ashley Hinshaw. That’s one heck of a wonderful cast but, considering that MacLachlan’s feature screenwriting debut was the critically lauded Amy Adams career-launcher Junebug, it’s no surprise that so many great talents would want to hitch their wagons to MacLachlan’s star. The film centers on “what happens to a man who’s unexpectedly divorced by his wife and forced to adapt to a new life, balancing the well-being of his daughter with his newly-complicated sex life.” While official casting notes on who is playing who have not yet been reported, it’s probably safe to say that Schneider will star in the central role (and...

Because I have the sleeping habits of a 75-year-old golden girl, I rarely stay up past 11:00 pm (sometimes even 9:00 is pushing it). But I’m more than willing to cast aside my senior citizen bedtime if it means that I get to watch The Heart, She Holler—Adult Swim’s latest foray into live-action comedy. This twisted six-part miniseries, starring Patton Oswalt and Bob’s Burgers’ Kristen Schaal, is a hodgepodge of Lynchian surrealism, Southern Gothic melodrama, and absurdist humor. Although Adult Swim is known for its incendiary programming, The Heart, She Holler, which first aired earlier this month, is arguably the most subversive and definitely the most disturbingly funny live-action comedy currently on the network (and who would expect anything less from a show produced by Pffr, the company behind Wonder Showzen?).
