Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Part of the structure of this editorial series is working through the Amityville “franchise” in chronological order, so it was surprising to discover that Amityville Cop (2021) wasn’t listed on the Wikipedia list of titles.
Turns out Amityville Cop is something of an Amityville Prison (aka Against the Night) in which the word “Amityville” is never spoken and there’s no concrete connection to any of the other films. Sure, there’s a Satanic cult who dress in red, but there are none of Dustin Ferguson’s masks like Amityville in the Hood and the cult leader, Empress Ciara (Laurene Landon), has no back story that connects to any of the other villains in the “series.”

Cinema Epoch has taken the U.S. rights to “Cellar,” the Igor Voloshin movie that stars French-American actor Jean Marc Barr. Starline recently boarded sales on the Slovak-language picture.
In the film, Barr (“The Big Blue”) plays a jobbing rock musician. His marriage and life are put to the test as he has to decide whether to take the law into his own hands when his teenage daughter goes missing after heading to an all-night rave.
It is unusual for the first deal to be for the U.S. with a non-English-language title, but Cinema Epoch has a new Cinema Epoch Classics label for international cinema and has stepped up.
Cinema Epoch will launch “Cellar” on Amazon Prime in November followed by a cable and VOD rollout in January. “Jean Marc Barr brings a very calculated and intense performance in Voloshin’s strikingly photographed and edge of your seat directed thriller,...

L.A.-based indie distributor Cinema Epoch has acquired U.S. rights to “Penance,” the English- and Irish-language movie about a priest confronting his past as a firebrand preacher who promoted violence against British rule in Northern Ireland.
Tom Collins helmed the picture, which is produced by his Derry-based De Facto Films and Edwina Forkin’s Zanzibar Films. Broadcaster TG4, The Irish Film Board, Northern Ireland Screen, and the Irish Language Broadcast fund supported the project. Collins’ Gaelic-language movie, “Kings,” was Ireland’s first foreign-language entry to the Oscars in 2007.
Peter Coonan (“Love/Hate”) plays the priest whose youthful support for violent resistance across a divided Ireland catches up with him in later life. Barry Barnes (“71”) and Gerard McSorley (“Omagh”) also star.
London-based Starline Entertainment is handling worldwide sales of “Penance” and did the Cinema Epoch deal. Julie Delaney, Starline’s director of worldwide distribution, negotiated the agreement with Cinema Epoch...

Holy shit guys! No, seriously. Dreams are coming true with the video above. I heard about Samurai Cop in the mid 2000’s when Media Blasters put out the DVD with the Joe Bob Briggs commentary. Rumors were that the man who played the title character, Joe Marshall (aka. The Samurai Cop), Matt Hannon had shuffled off this mortal coil. Hell, that’s what I was telling people when we showed Samurai Cop at Late Nite Grindhouse. Then, last year, Hannon emerged via a YouTube video stating & proving that he was still alive and in excellent shape.
The ball started rolling from there. Gregory Hatanaka, who is behind Cinema Epoch and was releasing all of the original director’s, Amir Shervan, films, met up with Hannon and others and started an Kickstarter to get the feature some funding. Bai Ling, Lexi Belle and Tommy Wiseau join up with Matt Hannon, Mark Frazer...

Writer-director Gregory Hatanaka's Blue Dream is a very strange film. It is one of those films that every five minutes or so, I would take a double-take, press the pause button and think to myself "wait, what did I miss?" After a while, though, I acclimated to the fact that Blue Dream exists purely in the unreliable, drug-riddled mind of the protagonist, Robert Harmon (James Duval). From that point on, the pressure was off to try to "get" Blue Dream, instead I just settled in [with a vaporizer] for the wild and crazy ride. From what I can hobble together from the narrative, Robert lives the high stress lifestyle of a newspaper reporter. Whenever he is not at his desk cranking out content like a robot on -- well -- crank, Robert tries to live life to its fullest with a steady diet of drugs, booze and women. Amanda (Pollyanna McIntosh) is...

Director Gregory Hatanaka is, to put it mildly, a madman. His films are wild concoctions of disparate influences jammed together with an urgent energy, the sorts of things that seem steeped more in experimental theater than they do with any sort of mainstream film culture. He first came to attention here thanks to his 2006 effort Mad Cowgirl and he's back now with Blue Dream.James Duval, Dominique Swain, Pollyanna McIntosh, Kayden Kross, Noah Hathaway, Walter Koenig, Sal Landi and Richard Riehle star in the story of a news writer who finds himself caught up in a world of sex, drugs and corporate takeovers as he tries to solve a series of murders. This, of course, only scratches the surface of what Hatanaka is up to....

Movieline's Two-Minute Verdict has parsed some astoundingly convoluted (or convolutedly astounding?) trailers in 2009, from After Last Season to Perfect Sport. Yet neither of those -- in fact, no trailer ever -- has presented quite the bafflement that is the first spot for something called Violent Blue. From its accompanying plot synopsis to its screamy, disjointed, narrative-allergic, mildly Nsfw set-ups, director Gregory Hatanaka has pushed trailer arts to unprecedented heights of insanity. And that's not the oxygen getting thinner around you, either; that's just your brain melting.

When last we heard from writer-director Gregory Hatanaka he was fusing religious hysteria with the fear of a tainted food supply in Mad Cowgirl and now he's back to ... well, it's hard to say exactly what Hatanaka is up to with Violent Blue but that is only because Hatanaka is so gleefully strange. A cast of indie film veterans and underground stars play in a large cast of characters joined by their bizarre obsessions. Check the first proper trailer for the film below.

Gregory Hatanaka’s psychedelic martial arts thriller “Mad Cowgirl” was a perplexing motion picture, a real head-scratcher. To be perfectly honest, I’m still not entirely sure if I fully comprehend the message the filmmakers were trying to impart. And while I have this strange, unexplainable desire to give the flick another spin, I seriously doubt I could stomach another viewing anytime soon. That said, Hatanaka’s latest endeavor, the cleverly-titled “Violent Blue,” intrigues me. Judging from the teaser trailer recently unearthed by the fine fellows at Twitch, the film appears to be another entry in the “How hard is it to emulate David Lynch?” genre. Apparently, it’s not as difficult as you might think. “Violent Blue” will unleash its surreal fury early next year.

When writer-director Gregory Hatanaka last graced these pages it was accompanied by his utterly bizarre cult title Mad Cowgirl - a film which fused religious hysteria, kung fu splatter, sex, contaminated meat and Walter Koenig. And, yes, Koenig was involved in the sex. And now Hatanaka is back with another lo-fi opus, this one titled Violent Blue. What’s it all about? I have no idea but it looks every bit as odd as his previous work. Check the trailer below the break!
