Director Nick Castle’s 1984 sci-fi film The Last Starfighter is one of the most revered cult classics of the 1980s, so it has been no surprise to hear that the film’s screenwriter Jonathan R. Betuel is eager to revive the property is some way. Eight years ago, it was announced that Betuel was working on a spin-off TV series called The Starfighter Chronicles, which would focus on alien law enforcement. That project has never made it into production. Five years ago, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story writer Gary Whitta revealed that he was working with Betuel on a reboot called The Last Starfighters. That one even got a sizzle reel, but still didn’t make it into production. Now, during an interview with Gizmodo, actor Wyatt Russell revealed that he’d love to see a remake of The Last Starfighter.

Look, I know what you're thinking: "'The Last Starfighter 2'? What dried-up, over-the-hill Gen-Xers and Millennials still drunk on '80s nostalgia are clinging to the hope of that ever coming to pass?" Actually, you know what, I apologize, that's a bad faith take. You didn't click on this article just to make fun of "Last Starfighter" fans for grasping at straws. You're here because, unlike those know-it-alls, you're aware that "The Last Starfighter 2" is surprisingly close to becoming a real thing.

John Carpenter's "Halloween" is one of the finest horror films ever made. Rick Rosenthal's "Halloween II" is one or 12 steps down from that.
Carpenter's original is also one of the most successful independent productions of all time. It launched the slasher film craze, made Jamie Lee Curtis a star and, thanks to the white-masked Michael Myers, spawned lifelong nightmares in the subconscious of every kid who begged their parents to let them watch it. Forty-five years on, "Halloween" is still a wildly effective, brilliantly crafted film. It is, per its tagline, "The Night He Came Home." "Halloween II" was unimaginatively sold as "More of the Night He Came Home." It's basically the "More American Graffiti" of horror flicks, and, like that film, it's better than its reputation suggests.
Having established himself as a genre auteur, Carpenter bowed out of directing the sequel and set his sights on "The Fog.

A new episode of the Real Slashers video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at one of the more popular installments in the franchise that shares its name with our favorite holiday, Halloween. The movie is 1981’s Halloween II (watch it Here), and to hear all about it, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Rick Rosenthal from a screenplay by John Carpenter and Debra Hill, Halloween II has the following synopsis: John Carpenter’s Halloween scared the living daylights out of 25 million people and set a precedent in smashing box-office records for a horror film. And now, prepare yourself to go one step further as the nightmare continues in Halloween II. Picking up precisely where its predecessor left off, Halloween II follows the same ill-fated characters as they encounter the knife-wielding terror they left for dead in the first Halloween. But...

Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story star David Harbour considers his new film to be a real-life The Last Starfighter.
In Nick Castle’s 1984 film that Steven Spielberg and Seth Rogen have both tried to remake, Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) is an aimless teenager who perfects an arcade game called Starfighter and ends up being recruited by the game’s alien inventor to help fight in an interstellar war. Well, Neil Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo tells the true story of how Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe) mastered the Gran Turismo video game en route to being recruited by Nissan and becoming a professional racing driver.
Harbour’s character, Jack Salter, who’s a former driver turned mechanic, is the one tasked with actually turning Jann into a proper race car driver, and the role has shades of Robert Duvall in Days of Thunder (1990), John Candy in Cool Runnings (1993) and Emilio Estevez...

When you are talking about the big slasher franchises of all time, the original 4, the Mount Rush-Gore if you will, it’s a losing argument to try and say any of the first films don’t hold up. Of course, I’m talking about Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. What you Can do is look at their many, Many, sequels and see what sticks and what doesn’t. Or you know, in our case, what stands the test of time and what doesn’t. Some of these are just schlocky fun and don’t need a critical reappraisal but a couple of them that have higher reputations that...

Of all of Hollywood’s attempts to cash in on the video game craze of the 1980s, The Last Starfighter trails only Tron as the decade’s most fondly nostalgized entry in the video game movie’s micro boom. Like Tron, Nick Castle’s film is a demonstration of then-new CGI technology, which means that inevitably its heavy reliance on wireframe animations and blocky, thickly pixelated objects has very much aged, though the fact that its visual effects are tethered to the game technology of the day further highlights it as a relic of its era. Perhaps the one area in which it’s ahead of its time is in its conceit of an arcade game being used as a military recruiting tool.
At the center of The Last Starfighter is a teenager named Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), who lives in a trailer park at the dusty outskirts of his hometown.

Last year, Fright Rags got their “Stop the Killer” series of board games started with a board game inspired by the 1984 killer Santa classic Silent Night, Deadly Night (watch it Here). That was followed by a board game inspired by another classic slasher, the 1981 film My Bloody Valentine (watch it Here). Hosted and directed by Ryan Cultrera, the show was all about “revisiting the actual filming locations for some of the most popular films ever made and seeing how they’re holding up today, all while examining just how these locations were used in the finished film.” The premiere episode, released in 2015, gave a tour of the locations used for filming the 1978 classic Halloween. This Halloween, Where It Was Made is making its triumphant return in the most appropriate way possible: with an episode that gives a tour of the locations that were used for filming the 1981 sequel Halloween II (watch it Here)! On July 13, 1984, Universal debuted Nick Castle’s sci-fi actioner The Last Starfighter in theaters. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review, headlined “‘Starfighter’ summer tonic for youthful sci-fi film enthusiasts,” is below:
The Last Starfighter is a fight science-fiction adventure that may prove a summer tonic to young viewers whose heads swirl with notions of alien planets, forces and intergalactic warriors. For others, this Universal/Lorimar production may be an all-too-familiar trek through familiar plot terrain and special effects wizardry.
Lance Guest stars as a recent high school grad who’s a videogame whiz. Guest lives in a trailer park and aspires to bigger things. He wants to go away to school, not just the local community college, but doesn’t have the funds. The best thing about his life is his frisky girl friend (Catherine Mary Stewart) and the escapist time he spends,...

Stars: Nick Damici, Ethan Embry, Tom Noonan, Tina Louise, Rutanya Alda, Caitlin O’Heaney, Lance Guest, Erin Cummings, Larry Fessenden | Written by Eric Stolze | Directed by Adrián García Bogliano
Nick Damici has been a familiar face in the horror genre for years now. Primarily working with writer/director Jim Mickle, on whose films he has also co-written, this gruff, large but still oddly charming presence has impressed before but he was never given a true lead part until this film. With Mickle uninvolved, although long-time cohort Larry Fessenden produces and pops up in a cameo role, Damici takes centre stage in Late Phases, a film with the wonderfully juicy premise of a blind ‘Nam veteran getting revenge on a werewolf after it kills his best friend.
It feels appropriate to base this review around Damici as he is the chugging motor which drives the film and the beating heart which actually makes you invest in it.

After spending decades in the planning stages, a sequel to 1984’s cult sci-fi classic The Last Starfighter is finally throwing off the shackles imposed by endless rights issues and studio problems.
In a new interview with Moviehole, the film’s co-writer, Jonathan R. Betuel, has offered an update on the status of The Last Starfighter 2, which he has been plotting for quite a while with Rogue One and Star Wars Rebels scribe Gary Whitta.
Whitta has previously described the project as “a combination of reboot and sequel that we both think honors the legacy of the original film while passing the torch to a new generation” and plans are still very much in motion to see the movie come to fruition.
“It looks like we’ll be making the deal to get it going,” Betuel confirmed. “Gary’s a gifted collaborator, we’ll be writing the script together but it’s taken a long time.

It's famously one of the worst sequels ever, but why did Jaws The Revenge go so wrong? Ryan looks at its disastrous nine-month production...
It's an oft-repeated adage that nobody sets out to make a bad movie, but Jaws The Revenge is so legendarily, comically bad that it almost looks like an inside job. The fishy sequel, released in 1987 to scathing reviews, famously stars a rubbery shark that growls when its head rears out of the water, Michael Caine spouting bizarre dialogue and some of the most glaring continuity errors this side of an Ed Wood movie.
What separates Jaws The Revenge from the usual bad-movie crowd is its otherwise decent pedigree. It was the product of a major Hollywood studio. The budget was generous. The director, Joseph Sargent, was far from a hack - a veteran of TV and film, he'd previously made the classic thriller...

Lance Guest plays a teen obsessed with an arcade game named “Starfighter” that turns out to be an intergalactic training vehicle. Thanks to his high scores, he’s whisked away by avuncular alien Robert Preston to join other warriors in protecting his home planet. Director Nick Castle (best known for portraying Michael Meyers in Halloween) was one of the first directors to make extensive use of CGI and that, combined with its Archie Andrews in Space storyline, helped make the film a modest hit that would gain a substantial afterlife due to its ubiquitous presence on early cable broadcasts.

If you're a fan of the cult classic sci-fi movie The Last Starfighter, you could soon be able to explore its intergalactic world.
The original film's screenwriter Jonathan R Betuel is teaming with virtual reality company Surreal to turn it into the first-ever virtual reality television series.
Director Nick Castle's cult classic film followed a teenage boy (Lance Guest) as he joined with an alien army in an intergalactic war.
The Last Starfighter made history as one of the first movies to use extensive CGI in 1984, and now it could be on the cutting edge of technology again.
In a new story focused on an alien police force, some scenes in The Last Starfighter TV show will break the traditional television frame to expand for viewers using virtual reality devices.
"It's a very interesting blend," the writer told Variety. "The other-worldiness of it lends itself to Vr."

It’s been the white whale for filmmakers for years, with the likes of Steven Spielberg and Seth Rogen trying to shoot their remake spears into The Last Starfighter. But after years of brushing aside every request, original writer and rights-holder Jonathan Betuel is spearheading not a new film, but a TV series that will only obliquely reference the 1984 original. The film, which some may fondly remember from the early days of home VHS machines (it was the first film this writer’s family rented), The Last Starfighter was the story of Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), a video game-obsessed teenager who becomes Starfighter’s highest scorer and is whisked off to help fight in a massive alien conflict. Although initially reticent, he agrees when he discovers that the enemy has wiped out most of the pilots who trained with him.Despite his own stand against remakes in the years, Betuel...

The Last Starfighter screens midnights this weekend (June 12th and 13th) at The Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ Midnight Series. There will also be a 10am screening Saturday the 13th.
The Last Starfighter, the 1984 sci-fi film about a video-gaming teen (Lance Guest – remember him?…me neither) who finds himself recruited as a gunner for an alien defense force, will probably be best remembered as one of the first science-fiction films to feature fully computer-generated images instead of model shots, and that’s unfortunate. Slick, fun, and full of energy, The Last Starfighter is one of the better “forgotten” science fiction films of the ‘80s – a movie with fun characters, an involving story, and enough action and adventure to keep both kids and adults entertained.

In the wake of the Alien 5 news, here are 10 franchise sequels that also ignored at least one previous film.
We all have moments in our lives we'd prefer to forget, and so too do filmmakers. So what do you do when a movie franchise starts to go off the rails? Simple, just forget that the lesser films in the series never happened.
News recently broke that director Neill Blomkamp's taking this approach to the Alien universe. Recent interviews with both he and returning star Sigourney Weaver have revealed that Blomkamp's forthcoming sequel will not necessarily follow the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, and pick up the story from Aliens instead (although he has since given a brief update on that).
Of course, we'll have to wait and see exactly how all this pans out. But it's by no means the first time in history that a film's...

With Late Phases, filmmaker Adrian Garcia Bogliano pens a visual love letter to werewolf films, all while weaving a wonderfully nuanced story of an embittered and blind war veteran (Nick Damici) forced to fight a beastly killer preying on the seniors living in a quiet retirement community.
What it lacks in overt frills, Late Phases makes up for in compelling storytelling and wonderfully layered characters, courtesy of screenwriter Eric Stolze, who does an admirable job of making his werewolf tale a compelling allegory for the aging process and the idea of dying with dignity. Without a doubt, Late Phases is one of the finest lycanthrope films of the last 20 years and a shining example of great independent horror.

In Late Phases, versatile actor Nick Damici (Stake Land, Cold in July) portrays a blind Vietnam vet who has recently moved into a senior living community that’s harboring a deadly secret- werewolves- and he must find a way to put an end to the beastly killings before it’s too late for everyone.
Daily Dead recently chatted with Damici about his experiences collaborating on Late Phases with director Bogliano and his co-stars as well as what initially drew him to the project and the challenges of playing a visually-impaired character. Happy Valley, named after the area where Pennsylvania State University is located, dives into the child sexual-abuse scandal that rocked Penn State, while Monk looks at an unlikely ascetic who gave up life in the fast lane.
Kino Lorber also is launching Iranian Western Vampire pic A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, which it is releasing with Vice Films. The title, which was born out of a previous short film, debuted at Sundance in January.

“I feel like I’m dropping you off in prison,” Will tells his blind father Ambrose as he helps him move into his new home at the Crescent Bay retirement community. Late Phases is a werewolf film from the minds of Adrián García Bogliano (Here Comes the Devil) and Eric Stolze (Under the Bed). In the film, a war veteran chooses a quiet community in which to retire. But, a hairy beast stalks the local residents, by moonlight. This hairy title is set to release in November and a full trailer for the film is hosted here. As well, the film stars Nick Damici, Lance Guest, Erin Cummings and Tom Noonan. A preview for the film is hosted here. The film is set in Crescent Bay. This quiet retirement community does not welcome veteran Ambrose (Damici), with open arms. Though, this aging war hero's fame rises when he battles creatures in the night. But, is Ambrose up to the challenge of fighting a whole pack of these blood-thirsty creatures? The trailer for Late Phases shows Ambrose gathering supplies for the fight.

In the new horror movie Late Phases, actor and excellent cook Nick Damici (Cold in July) plays a blind war veteran who discovers that something is badly wrong in the seemingly idyllic retirement community of Crescent Bay—and it isn't excessive bingo fees. Directed by much-tipped terror auteur Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Here Comes the Devil, Penumbra), the film costars Ethan Embry, Lance Guest, Erin Cummings, the great Tom Noonan, and indie-horror godfather Larry Fessenden, among others. Late Phases stalks its hairy way into select cinemas on Nov. 21. See an exclusive trailer for the film below.

‘Late Phases’ tells the story of Ambrose (Damici) a wounded war veteran, now blind who along with his guide dog is moving into a retirement community and about to begin his first night there. Upon arrival, he and his son (Embry) unload his things and at first appearance, the community seems like a wholesome and peaceful place. Even Ambrose’s neighbor is extremely friendly and welcoming, kindly welcoming him to his new home. While settling in for his first night, he begins to hear a commotion and what sounds like a possible attack next door and he tries to investigate. His guide dog (also clearly disturbed by something in the near vicinity) ends up confronting a huge beast (to us horror fans, quite obviously a werewolf) and after being severely injured, Ambrose is forced to put down his friend and guide. Soon he begins to question the goings on in...

Nick Damici has been a familiar face in the horror genre for a few years now. Primarily working with writer/director Jim Mickle, on whose films he has also co-written, this gruff, large but still oddly charming presence has impressed before but he’s not been given a true lead part until now.
It feels appropriate to base this review around Damici as he is the chugging motor which drives the film and the beating...
