The Roundabout Theatre Company tonight renamed its Broadway venue – a 104-year-old building that began as the Selwyn and most recently went by the prosaic American Airlines Theatre – to honor its late artistic director Todd Haimes.
The 42nd Street venue officially became the Todd Haimes Theatre in a dedication ceremony tonight. The name change was announced last June, and becomes official just in time to welcome its first tenant: The revival of John Patrick Shanley’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play Doubt: A Parable, directed by Scott Ellis and starring Tyne Daly and Liev Schreiber, begins previews this Friday ahead of a February 29 opening night.
The venue’s name change was made to honor, in the words of the company, the “extraordinary dedication to the institution [Haimes] called home, and his enormous contributions to Roundabout and the entire theatre community.”

Broadway loves a recognizable name, a famous band or singer that can fuel a jukebox musical on nostalgia and familiar tunes. To its credit, Harmony isn’t that.
If you’ve heard of the Comedian Harmonists, it’s likely that you’ve either seen Harmony or heard about it. Maybe you’re among the countless Barry Manilow fans who follow his every move (and he’s been trying to move with Harmony for decades). But otherwise, chances are good that you don’t know the Harmonists.
And exactly why you don’t know the Harmonists is the most intriguing aspect of Harmony, the new musical directed by Warren Carlyle opening on Broadway tonight. A Berlin-based vocal and comedy group of the 1920s and ’30s, the Comedian Harmonists were hugely popular, successful and famous in their day, selling millions of records, appearing in dozens of films and selling out major venues across the world,...

Exclusive: Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James are joining forces to star in a scorching new play by Penelope Skinner, directed by Ian Rickson, that will open in London’s West End in the fall.
Pretty hot names to have atop a theater marquee, that’s for sure.
The drama, called Lyonesse, will open at the Harold Pinter Theatre in late September or early October. Official dates are being determined.
In this new work, Skinner — who won the George Devine Award for most promising playwright in 2011 for The Village Bike — focuses on Elaine (Scott Thomas), a reclusive and brilliant actress who disappeared from public view under mysterious circumstances.
Elaine summons Kate (James), a young film executive, to her remote Cornish estate to facilitate “her glorious comeback,” according to a production source who copped me a premise of the play.
“But who really controls the stories we tell and how we get to tell them?...

“We had the chance to make something truly joyous,” explains Tony nominee Warren Carlyle of “The Music Man.” With Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster as the stars in this revival, the stage was set for the choreographer to craft a show where “you can leave all your troubles outside the doors.” He credits much of that joy to a new approach, one focused on character. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“I have two stars who can really dance,” notes Carlyle, referencing Jackman and Foster. “So there was an opportunity there to make the show dance in perhaps a way it hasn’t done before.” Golden Age musicals of the 30s and 40s are this choreographer’s bread and butter, as seen in his efforts with previous revivals of “Finian’s Rainbow,” “Kiss Me, Kate” and “Hello Dolly!” But these classics often contain giant ensembles, so the large group numbers often become the focus for him.

A new stage musical co-written by Barry Manilow opens tonight in New York, but the decades-in-the-making project will have to go on without Manilow there to support it: He has Covid.
“I am heartbroken to say that I have just tested positive for Covid-19 and won’t be able to attend tonight’s opening night performance of my new musical Harmony,” Manilow said in a statement. “This just might be the cruelest thing that has ever happened to me: 25 years waiting for this show to premiere in New York and I can’t attend.”
Manilow’s statement concludes, “Even in the face of this pandemic, we New Yorkers remain the toughest, staunchest people on the planet — so, put on a mask and go see a show!”

It has been eight years since Hugh Jackman notoriously hopped his way into Radio City Music Hall to host the 68th Tony Awards and even longer since he won a Tony himself. But at long last, Jackman has returned to Broadway in a revival of the Americana classic “The Music Man” starring Professor Harold Hill. In this mounting, which opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on Feb. 10, Sutton Foster joins him as Marian Paroo.
This fourth production of the Meredith Willson musical on Broadway is directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, who also helmed the lavish and adored remounting of “Hello, Dolly!” a few years ago. Zaks has assembled an impressive ensemble for his production, including Tony winners Shuler Hensley, Jayne Houdyshell, Jefferson Mays, and Marie Mullen, plus Tony-winning creatives Warren Carlyle, Santo Loquasto, and Brian MacDevitt.

In a break with Broadway custom of recent decades, producers of The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster are not inviting critics to pre-opening night previews.
Instead, critics are being invited to the revival’s Feb. 10 opening night at the Winter Garden Theatre, with reviews embargoed until thereafter. (Deadline received the invitation by email today.)
Typically, critics are invited to at least several pre-opening night previews, with reviews embargoed until opening night. Although the trope of aisle-sitters rushing to file reviews after the opening night curtain falls conjures images of All About Eve-era Broadway, the practice is thought to have generally continued at least into the 1970s, with then-New York Times critic Richard Eder occasionally, perhaps apocryphally, credited with having encouraged the switch to critics’ previews to allow reviewers more time to consider and craft their reactions.

We got trouble, my friends, right there in New York City. It’s trouble with a capital T and that rhymes with C, and that stands for … Covid. Broadway’s revival of The Music Man has canceled performances through at least January 1 after star Hugh Jackman tested positive for the coronavirus.
The musical’s co-lead, Sutton Foster, revealed late last week that she had tested positive for the virus. But for now, performances are set to resume on Sunday, January 2.
It’s just the latest Broadway show forced to go dark as the nation and world endure the latest Covid spike, spurred by the more-contagious but potentially less dangerous Omicron variant.
“Just wanted you to hear it from me. I tested positive for covid,” Jackman tweeted today. Mild symptoms and as soon as I’m cleared … looking forward to getting back to The Winter Garden! @MusicManBway

West Side Story has not yet set a return date.

Update, with Music Man confirmation Producers Scott Rudin, Barry Diller and David Geffen confirmed today that The Music Man Broadway revival starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster has been postponed until next spring, making the musical the second Broadway postponement announced today.
“We’re obviously profoundly disappointed to be unable to start rehearsals for The Music Man as scheduled,” said Rudin in a statement. “But safety is safety, and it has to take precedence over every other consideration – for both our audience and for our company. Despite the postponement, we are sticking together as a company, and we are grateful to be able to do so. And so we look forward arriving at The Winter Garden – with a beautiful, heartening Music Man in tow – at the beginning of April, and to being just one part of what we expect will once again be a vibrant and exciting Broadway.”

Cheyenne said he knew the songs but didn't really know the story, 'It's very, very current. I was actually surprised. Hey, "So You Think You Can Dance" fans. Tonight, September 2,2019, another Live performances/results show did indeed air, and another two unlucky dancers got sent packing at the end of it. The judges: Laurieann Gibson, Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe were all on hand to give their critiques. The final 6 dancers were featured tonight. They danced with returning All-Stars from various seasons. Tonight's Live results show kicked off with the final 6 dancers doing another group routine. It featured them dressed up as zombie's and doing a spooky dance number from choreographers Pharside & Phoenix. Right after that, Bailey Munoz and All-Star Koine Iwasaki hit the stage to perform a Broadway routine by choreographer Al Blackstone. Afterwards, Dominic said, "Bailey is an amazing dancer. So, I believed the character and performance." Laurieann said, "I would buy a ticket to any show that Bailey is in." Nigel said, "Bailey is...

In the race for Best Musical, Sam and I both think “Hadestown” will prevail, but we consider the outside possibility of an upset by “The Prom” in part because it just won the top honor at the Drama Desk Awards (“Hadestown” was not eligible in that category because it already contended for its Off-Broadway production at the 2017 ceremony). Nearly 10 million people saw Camille A. Brown’s work one night last year. Let that sink in. On a single evening – Easter Sunday 2018 – Brown’s choreography for NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert reached a number of viewers unimaginable in the dance, theater and concert halls of New York, and yet an accomplishment this year in one of those very theaters has made an impact quite possibly of equal or greater impact. While the Drama Desk Awards nominate a slew of off-Broadway fare, the winners invariably come from Broadway. That was once again the case on Sunday when all but one of the 16 champs in the musical races were Broadway productions while it was 8 of 12 on the play side.

One of its main rivals for Best Musical at the Tony Awards is “Tootsie,” which claimed victories for Best Actor (Santino Fontana), Book, Music, and Lyrics. But it was another contender, “The Prom,” that swooped in and claimed Best Musical despite losing all of its other bids.
