Dool fans are bracing themselves for the emotional funeral of Doug Williams after Bill Hayes’ passing. But will the show bring back Doug’s daughter Hope and her beloved Bo for the tribute?
Dool To Mourn Doug Williams, Celebrate Bill Hayes
Daytime television lost one of the greats in early 2024 when actor Bill Hayes passed away at the age of 98. He played Doug Williams on Days Of Our Lives for over 50 years. His real-life wife, Susan Seaforth Hayes, played Julie Williams, Doug’s wife.
The characters became the show’s matriarch and patriarch after the passing of Alice and Tom Horton (Frances Reid and Macdonald Carey.)
Days of Our Lives plans to kill off Doug Williams to pay tribute to both Bill Hayes and the character at the same time. The soap films months in advance, which means the funeral won’t air until December.

Bill Hayes, the actor and singer who with his real-life wife, Susan Seaforth Hayes, starred on NBC’s Days of Our Lives as the beloved first couple of daytime television, died Friday in Los Angeles, a rep from the show told The Hollywood Reporter. He was 98.
Before he was known as a soap opera legend, Hayes was a regular on Sid Caesar‘s famed live TV variety program Your Show of Shows, and in 1955 he had the No. 1 song in America, “The Ballad of Davy Crockett.”
He also partnered in a nightclub act with future Brady Bunch star Florence Henderson; they were known as “The Singing Sweethearts” and sang about Oldsmobiles on TV commercials, many of them performed live.
Hayes joined Days of Our Lives to play con artist/lounge singer Doug Williams in February 1970. Seaforth Hayes, who portrayed the spoiled heiress Julie Olsen Banning Anderson Williams, had joined the show 15 months earlier.

Showbiz dynamo Ann-Margret tries on ‘teenage hellion’ for size. She terrorizes the straight, impossibly patient John Forsythe, sending him on a weekend ordeal with razor-wielding hooligans. He can kiss both his marriage and his political ambitions goodbye: who will believe David when Jody claims he took advantage of her? Douglas Heyes’ sordid suspense thriller has a loser reputation but is big fun in the star-watching game: Ann-Margret has no choice but to go way over the top and chew scenery, and the direction doesn’t offer enough support. The technical remaster is excellent, and the disc extras generous.

While the vast majority of our favorite films of last year have been treated with Blu-ray releases, one title near the top of the list we’ve been waiting the longest for is Kelly Reichardt‘s Certain Women. It looks like it’s been worth the wait as The Criterion Collection have unveiled their September releases and it’s leading the pack (with special features also an interview with the director and Todd Haynes!).
Also getting a release in September, is Michael Haneke‘s Isabelle Huppert-led The Piano Teacher and the recent documentary David Lynch: The Art Life (arriving perfectly-timed to the end of the new Twin Peaks). There’s also Alfred Hitchcock‘s classic psychodrama Rebecca and the concert film Festival, featuring Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, and many more.
Check out the high-resolution cover art and full details on the releases below, with more on Criterion’s site.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees today announced the creation of two new divisions effective June 4. Iatse’s Broadcast division, separate from the union’s Motion Picture and Television division, will focus on reality TV and other unscripted television. “Representation of broadcast technicians remains an integral part of this Union, and this change will bring added focus and prominence to those crafts,” said union president Matthew Loeb today. Sandra England, currently at Iatse’s Seattle office, will head the Broadcast Division. The new Education and Training division is intended to help union members broaden their skills. Former union representative Patricia White will run Education and Training. Additionally the union says that its Organizing division will now become part of the Stagecraft division. This is intended, says the union, to give Stagecraft the integration abilities and advantages that the other divisions of Motion Picture and Television Production, Tradeshow and Canadian Affairs already have.
