Hank Braxtan has given us a genetically altered polar bear in Unnatural, a giant urban serpent in Snake Outta Compton and a dragon in Dragon Soldiers. And now he delivers the dinosaurs in his latest film, Jurassic Hunt. I wonder what took him so long?
A group of hunters, including Parker (Courtney Loggins; Give My Love To Rose), Valentine (Tarkan Dospil; 4 Minutes), Torres and African poacher and warlord Blackhawk, has been flown into a remote and hidden location. They’re there to hunt the biggest game of all, dinosaurs. Lindon manager of Jurassic Hunt welcomes them, gives them their choice of weapons and tags them all with a tracking device, “Just in case”.

"This doesn't end until we're all dead!" Good! Lionsgate has released a trailer for a so-bad-you-have-to-see-this movie called Jurassic Hunt, which is surprisingly not a movie from The Asylum though it definitely looks like it. The world's most dangerous soldiers, mercenaries and big-game hunters arrive at a mysterious hunting reserve to hunt the deadliest game of all. When dinosaurs kill the tour guides in a wilderness park, the surviving trophy hunters must work together to evade the giant human-hungry ancient creatures and all the mercenaries hired to finish them off. This stars Courtney Loggins, Ruben Pla, Joston Theney, Motown Maurice, and Tarkan Dospil. The only way this can be good is if the dinosaurs eat every last one of them. Surprise, surprise, there's barely three shots of awful CGI dinos in the trailer. Don't watch this. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Hank Braxtan's Jurassic Hunt, direct from Lionsgate's...

Ruben Pla, Shaked Berenson and friends in The Horror Crowd
Film criticism is generally focused on the work of individual directors or creative teams, which is odd when you think about it because film, like most creative endeavours, ultimately emerges from community. People talk, share ideas, watch one another’s work, help each other out. There are few more accessible examples of how this works than the horror community, especially that part of it concentrated in and around Hollywood, and it’s this community that actor-turned-director Ruben Pla has sought to capture in his documentary The Horror Crowd. Screening at Frightfest and Grimmfest, the UK’s biggest genre festivals, it has proved a hit with fans. Between the two events, Ruben and I sat down for a chat about the film and the stories it tells.

The film is made very much from an insider’s perspective.

I’ve always been fond of documentaries that explore the deeper echelon of horror, and especially those that sit down with a plethora of actors and filmmakers to discuss a variety of topics. That’s what The Horror Crowd is all about, with veteran insider Ruben Pla taking us on a journey across Hollywood’s horror scene, talking to actors, directors, writers and producers as discussions happen in a very organic way. It feels like a gentle and easy-going conversation, and I dug that.
It’s a nice arrangement of talking heads, here, too. From the likes of Lin Shaye (Insidious), Greg Grunberg (Heroes) and producer of Paranormal Activity and Chernobyl Diaries, Oren Peli, to indie horror actress Sarah Nicklin (The Haunting of Alice D), editor of Tales of Halloween,...

It's a difficult thing to pull off a documentary about a filmmaking community with out it coming across as, well, luvvie. Ruben Pla's portrait of Hollywood's horror directors, producers, writers and stars is impressive in this regard, largely thanks to its wit, energy and irreverent sense of humour.
There are a lot of big names, here emphasising just how much talent has come out of - or been drawn to - this area. Russell Mulcahy looks back over the long years of his career, telling stories about Freddie Mercury and some serious partying. Lin Shaye demonstrates her familiar gift for finding humour in curious little incidents. Oren Peli talks about his excitement on first seeing The Blair Witch Project: "Until that moment... I didn't know that any idiot can go out and get a video camera and make a movie. I can be that idiot."
Composed in large part of interviews.

Fear…the most primal of human emotions. Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman… The Exorcist, Jaws, Alien. What made the creators of these films dream up the nightmares that kept us up at night? Were they as strange and twisted as their creations? And what about today’s creators of horror? Who are the minds behind the macabre of present day?
That’s the question posed by The Horror Crowd, a new revealing, intimate documentary from veteran actor insider Ruben Pla, which puts a spotlight on the dedicated nightmare-creators that form Hollywood’s horror community. Covering wide-ranging topics such as ‘Being the Weird Kid’, ‘Women in Horror’, ‘Race Relations’, ‘The Dark Side’ and ‘Film Festivals’, this fascinating insight into horror filmmaking and the movie industry features contributions from some of horror’s most innovative and renowned creators such as Oren Peli, Russell Mulcahy, Lin Shaye, Adam Robitel, Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II), and Ernest R. The week I saw Fetish Factory, the new feature from writer/director Staci Layne Wilson, I also rewatched Anna Biller’s The Love Witch and Hillary Clinton lost her chance to be the first female president of the United States. I was very much in the mindset of seeing art through a specific prism of gender politics and sexism, which may have colored my reading of the movie. At the same time, I don’t know if that’s true. This is a movie with gender politics very much on its mind. You don’t make a movie about the male customers of a sex fetish club being turned into bloodthirsty zombies without wanting to say something about the relationship between men and women.

Starring Najarra Townsend, Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Alice Macdonald, Katie Stegeman, Matt Mercer, Charley Koontz, Simon Barrett, Ruben Pla, Dave Holmes and Celia Finkelstein, Contracted revolves around a 20's something Los Angeleno (Townsend), who finds herself infected with a rather potent sexual disease after being date-raped at a party.

In Contracted a 20-something girl gets what she thinks is an Std after a night of reckless partying… turns out, it’s far worse than anything she could ever have imagined. Writer-director Eric England puts a strange, sexual new twist on the zombie genre, and he’s here to explain how and why!
Dread Central: Ok, so let’s face it… Contracted (review here) isn’t for everybody. How’s reaction to the film been so far?
Eric England: Really positive actually. I am really happy with how they…. I don’t wanna say I am shocked, but I don’t think you go in thinking they are going to love it. It’s been really good.
DC: I would have to say I was shocked, I will use the word, because it's not the kind of movie that is just another viral zombie thing… you really put a unique slant on it.

Eric England’s “Contracted” has the potential to turn into a truly disturbing slice of bodily horror a la some of David Cronenberg’s best work. The tale of a lesbian woman who literally starts falling apart after a sexual encounter at a party could have been a commentary on sexuality, a riff on our national obsession with looking perfect, a cautionary tale about drinking, or even just a twisted slice of grotesque horror.
It ends up all and none of the above thanks to a dull script and style-less direction from England. The filmmaker is lucky that the fearless Najarra Townsend keeps the piece from crumbling entirely.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Townsend stars as Samantha, a girl who seems like she might be on the edge of a mental collapse before the physical one that overtakes her in the film. She’s leaving messages for her girlfriend Nikki (Katie Stegeman) that are...

Dread Central: Eric told me that you are quite a trooper considering all the makeup and everything you had to go through. Can you tell me a little bit about what that process was like for you, having to sort of do your thing without being able to see?
Najarra Townsend: We luckily had an amazing special effects artist. She just made everything comfortable. I feel like this could have been a disaster for my face, but luckily she was awesome. I just found it to be really fun. I mean, there were challenges that came with it, [but] even the not seeing kind of helped with my character.
