The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. Flanagan has let it be known that this isn’t horror, and cast member David Dastmalchian has said the same in a new interview with Gizmodo, describing the film and elements in it as beautiful and heartbreaking.
Dastmalchian, who was also in the recent King adaptation The Boogeyman, said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s beautiful. You think, ‘Oh, Mike Flanagan, Stephen King, this thing’s going to just be the most horrifying, terrifying, thing you’ve ever seen.’ [But] it is so beautifully rendered, heartfelt, the drama, the performances. The cast in this is deep.

In previous articles, we have taken a look at stars of the past we would like to see make a comeback – and there are a lot of them! It was too hard to narrow it down to just a few, so now we’ve put together another list of 80s stars we want back, including a couple of Freddy victims, some 1980s beauties we miss, and a lady we’ve only seen twice on our screens.

Who’s ready for a joyride? The long-rumored Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spin-off, Sam and Victor’s Day Off, is ready to twist and shout with David Katzenberg at the helm. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Katzenberg is buckling up for a film featuring the two mischievous valets who borrowed Cameron’s father’s Ferrari to rip through the streets of Chicago joyously! In his newsletter, Sneider says the duo’s adventure takes place on a single day, with Sam and Victor grabbing life by the short and curlies for a fast-paced tear through city streets.
Sam and Victor’s Day Off will be Katzenberg’s feature directorial debut after helming numerous television episodes for various shows. When Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" first hit theaters, it was the summer between high school and the start of my undergraduate studies. I was a lifelong fan of all things Batman and reading as many books about film theory as I could get my hands on. Simply put, I was the perfect target to get swept up in the frenzy of what many were considering the best Batman film ever made. Knowing this was the second part of a trilogy, my fantasy booking of the inevitable third film went wild, and as my Facebook memories love to show me every year, I went home and updated my status to say, "Dear Christopher Nolan, Give Me Harley Quinn!" When fans started making viral mockups of Kristen Bell donning photoshopped harlequin makeup, I saved them all.
This is all to say, Harley is and has always been my girl. From...

In the eyes of many, Margot Robbie is the defacto actress to play Harley Quinn on the silver screen. However, titans of talent, the likes of Arleen Sorkin, Tara Strong, Kaley Cuoco, Mia Sara, Melissa Rauch, Kang-Ji-young, Gillian Jacobs, and more, have all helped make Dr. Harleen Quinzel a beloved and lasting part of pop culture. While some would prefer Robbie to continue playing Harleen Quinn until the end of time, the Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey actress says she loves the idea of different actresses portraying the former Arkham Asylum psychologist-turned-criminal mastermind.
Speaking with Variety about the character’s future, including Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harleen for Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux, Robbie says it’s a dream come true to see the character move beyond her contribution.

During an interview last week, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) confirmed that his work on the film The Life of Chuck – the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – was complete. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep) is headed back into the world of Stephen King with The Life of Chuck, and Flanagan has announced that production has wrapped.
Perhaps what’s more notable here is that Flanagan’s announcement thread highlights what to expect. Or rather, what not to expect: The Life of Chuck won’t be a horror movie.
That’s probably not a surprise to those familiar with the source short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds. The Life of Chuck is three separate stories linked together to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor at 39 and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.

Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – recently went into production on another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck… and now, during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, star Tom Hiddleston (Loki) has confirmed that his work on the film has been completed. While talking about the film, Hiddleston also compared it to one of the most popular King adaptations, The Shawshank Redemption!

Horror enthusiasts have another reason to celebrate as Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Life of Chuck‘ takes shape. Initially teasing fans with big names such as Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, and Karen Gillan, the excitement intensified with the inclusion of horror legends Heather Langenkamp and Matthew Lillard.
It’s interesting to note that this isn’t the first collaboration between Flanagan and Langenkamp. They previously teamed up for Netflix’s ‘The Midnight Club,’ which aired back in 2022. While Langenkamp’s return to Flanagan’s fold has garnered attention, the addition of Matthew Lillard, famed for roles in ‘Scream’ and ‘Thirteen Ghosts,’ further beefs up the roster.
And the surprises don’t end there. Mia Sara, remembered fondly from ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Out,’ makes a significant comeback after a hiatus from the limelight. Others joining the project include David Dastmalchian, Harvey Guillén, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Antonio Raul Corbo,...

Once filming got underway in Alabama earlier this month (the independent production was able to secure a SAG interim agreement that allows it to film while the Screen Actors Guild strike is still going on), it was revealed that Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Jacob Tremblay (The Predator) are also in the cast. Bueller? Bueller? To many, Matthew Broderick will always be Ferris Bueller, the king of skipping school, dodging pesky principals and parade serenades. Broderick is well aware of this, fessing up that character will be his legacy.
Speaking with The Guardian, Matthew Broderick admitted he will forever be tied to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, saying, “What’s my legacy? Well, I’m Ferris Bueller, I suppose. I have to accept it. And I like it. I’ve made my peace with it.” Broderick almost seems a bit reluctant to latch onto the reputation of Ferris Bueller, although that might be because the movie is almost 40 years old and was part of the early stage of his career, adding, “I’m not ready for people to start discussing my legacy…And I have this Pollyanna streak that keeps me going. I always like to think there’s something coming that’s better.

There are certain things, when you live in Los Angeles, that are absolute must-dos, especially in the warmer weather months: see a show at the Hollywood Bowl (but leave before the fireworks); watch a movie at an outdoor venture (Hollywood Forever Cemetery being a favorite); and, in the past few years, travel to the Jim Henson Studios to watch a raunchy improv puppet comedy show.
“Puppet Up! Uncensored,” which resumes starting Friday, has become one of the things that you have to do in Los Angeles. And TheWrap spoke to Brian Henson, chairman of the Jim Henson Company, about the origins and evolution of this one-of-a-kind show. A genre that has been around for decades and gets talked about too rarely, sword and sorcery can encompass many films and sub-genres. So, what makes a sword and sorcery film better than the others? What makes it worthy of being the best? For some it will be how closely it follows the genre’s established rules and typical stories. For others, it will be how well-written and directed they are. For us, it’s how enjoyable they are, so, yes, some will deviate a bit from the usual rules of the genre, but all will be fun. So let’s take a look at what we consider the best sword and sorcery movies!

Life’s moved pretty fast since Ferris Bueller’s Day Off premiered, so it’s finally getting the 4K Ultra HD treatment: Paramount Home Entertainment is releasing a remastered version of John Hughes’ 1986 classic on August 1st.
The 4K Bueller keeps the spirit of the Reagan-era teen comedy alive with all the contemporary bells and whistles. In addition to the remaster with Dolby Vision, Hdr-10, and Dolby Atmos sound, the re-release includes a bunch of exclusive bonus content, including the late Hughes’ original director’s commentary, which has not been available on disc since Bueller’s first DVD release in 1999. You’ll also have access to plenty of behind-the-scenes footage and “lost tapes.”
For the uninitiated: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was Hughes’ fourth directorial effort, and helped propel its leading boys — Matthew Broderick and a way-before-Succession Alan Ruck — to screen stardom. The pair play high school best friends Ferris and Cameron,...

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it,” like Matthew Broderick almost missed the opportunity to star in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off because of complications with the film’s director, John Hughes. During an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s “It Happened in Hollywood” podcast, Broderick said he and Hughes butted heads in the lead-up to filming the beloved comedy.
“He was nervous [the film] wouldn’t come out right,” Broderick said about Hughes’s apprehension toward his performance. According to Broderick, Hughes’s apprehension stemmed from early costume test footage featuring him and co-stars Mia Sara, Alan Ruck, and Jennifer Grey walking around Chicago streets. "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" remains the quintessential '80s story of teenage suburban revolt almost forty years after it was released. Matthew Broderick had already appeared on Broadway and made his big screen debut with "War Games" and the criminally under-seen medieval fantasy romance "Ladyhawke." But it was his role as a dashing high school rebel that sent his career into the stratosphere.
With all the natural charisma Broderick gave Ferris, it seemed perfectly reasonable that his character would be able to stay home, play sick, and skip school while still being the perfect son and the most popular kid in high school. Ferris made kids everywhere think they could do anything -- even jump on board a parade float lip-synching "Twist and Shout" in front of a roaring crowd. Everyone wanted to either be Ferris or be around him, and Broderick was electric in the part.

Bueller…Bueller…oh, and Cameron, too! Ferris Bueller’s Day Off stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck recently sat down for a one-on-one conversation to discuss a variety of topics, most importantly John Hughes’ 1986 comedy. 1986 was a big year for Tom Cruise, with Tony Scott’s Top Gun cementing his status as the era’s biggest star. Yet, earlier that year, Universal released a delayed Tom Cruise epic that actually carried a heftier price tag than Top Gun and paired him with that movie’s director, Tony Scott’s brother – Ridley Scott. The film was Legend, and while a pretty notable flop in 1986, it’s since gone on to become something of a classic in the fantasy genre, even if it scared Cruise away from ever attempting another fantasy epic. It remains the only time Ridley Scott directed Cruise and sorting through the myriad cuts of the film, which boasts not one but two exceptional musical scores (Tangerine Dream and Jerry Goldsmith), is a chore. Yet, there’s something to be said about this Grimm’s Fairy Tale for adults – with Tim Curry stealing the...

In many Tim Curry movies, you may not even know he's there. Not because he lacks screen presence -- far from it in fact -- but because in many of his roles his face is concealed. Since his movie debut as Dr. Frank-n-Furter in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," Curry has been an actor whose roles often require heavy makeup. Throughout both Curry's scene-stealing turn as Pennywise in the 1990 "It" miniseries and in his performance as the devilish Lord of Darkness in Ridley Scott's 1985 fantasy film "Legend," his true face never appears.
However, Curry never lets the makeup do his job for him. As an actor, it's his job to entertain his audience, and you won't get very far if you try to do that with just a costume. Case-in-point: the Pennywise makeup isn't especially scary on its own, but Curry's manic malice makes the villain nightmarish.

Ridley Scott's "Legend" might be the closest thing we've gotten to a "Legend of Zelda" movie so far. The film came out in 1985, just a year before Nintendo's beloved fantasy-adventure video game series was created. Even so, the parallels between the two are hard to miss. Tom Cruise stars in "Legend" as Jack, a hero who has long hair and wears a green tunic. There's also a princess in the movie ("Ferris Bueller's Day Off" star Mia Sara in her screen debut) who gets kidnapped by a tall, demonic figure bent on ruling their magical homeland. See what I mean?
A critical and box office failure upon its theatrical release, "Legend" has gone on to amass a cult following. Similar to "Blade Runner," this was partly the result of a director's cut being released on DVD in 2002, with over 20 minutes of added footage and the original score by Jerry Goldsmith restored.

Ferris Bueller may be headed back to the big screen. Sort of.
A spinoff of the 1986 John Hughes teen comedy classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is being developed by Paramount Studios, according to a new report from Deadline. However, this new project won’t focus on the character famously played by Matthew Broderick. Instead, the spinoff would centre on the valet parking attendants who took a joy ride in the 1961 Ferrari 250 Gt California that belonged to the father of Bueller’s best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck). The Ferrari played a pivotal role in the movie, as fans will recall.

“Sam and Victor’s Day Off,” a spin-off from the classic hit film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” is in the works at Paramount, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
The film will follow the same-day adventure of the valets who took the 1961 Ferrari 250 Gt California Spyder on a joy ride in the original 1986 film. Although the two parking valets went unnamed in the original, they were played by Richard Edson and Larry “Flash” Jenkins. Jenkins died in 2019.

Paramount Pictures is getting ready to revisit “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” A spinoff of John Hughes’ beloved teen comedy is in the works at the studio, with the creators of “Cobra Kai” producing, Variety has confirmed.
Titled “Sam and Victor’s Day Off,” the film is a side story that focuses on the titular characters on the same day as Ferris (Matthew Broderick), Cameron (Alan Ruck) and Sloane (Mia Sara) skipped school in the ’86 flick. In the original film, Sam and Victor were valets who took Cameron’s father’s red Ferrari on a joy-ride. The characters went unnamed in the original film, and were portrayed by Richard Edson and the late Larry “Flash” Jenkins.
Jon Hurwtiz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, who created another expansion of an ’80s teen film in “Karate Kid” sequel series “Cobra Kai,” are producing the film, while their head of development Dina Hillier executive produces.

The dog days of summer are upon us, where it’s impossible to do much besides crank the air condition and plop down on the couch.
This is actually an okay option, especially considering how great the lineup of new movies is on Netflix. While there aren’t any truly terrific Netflix original movies this month (although Jamie Foxx’s vampire-hunting buddy comedy “Day Shift” almost made the list), there is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to new library titles on the streaming service.
In August there’s something for everyone on Netflix, from Keanu Reeves as a paranormal detective (“Constantine”) to a controversial Tom Cruise classic (“Eyes Wide Shut”) to a 1980s favorite that only gets better with age (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”). Plus so much!

Ok, so the actor Anthony Perkins is best known for his legendary role as Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s Psycho and its sequels… but that part is not the sum total of this superb actor’s career. That’s not to say he didn’t trade on his status as cinema’s seminal psycho, and starred in plenty of chiller thrillers, instantly lending them Batesian cachet… for example Edge of Sanity, a delirious conflation of Robert Louis Stephenson’s classic horror novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Jack the Ripper’s real-life reign of terror over Victorian London, where Perkins plays the unhinged lead role with aplomb. To celebrate the release of Edge of Sanity on Blu-ray from Arrow Video, here’s a round-up of some of Perkins’ finest non-Bates roles…

Tom Cruise and Tim Curry in Ridley Scott’s Legend (1985) will be available on Blu-ray September 28th from Arrow Video
This is such stuff as dreams are made of. This is Legend.
After changing the face of science fiction cinema forever with Alien and Blade Runner, director Ridley Scott turned his visionary eye to the fantasy genre, teaming with writer William Hjortsberg (Angel Heart) to create a breathtaking cinematic fairytale with one of the screen’s most astonishingly rendered depictions of Evil. In an idyllic, sun-dappled forest, the pure-hearted Jack (Tom Cruise) takes his true love Princess Lili (Mia Sara) to see a pair of unicorns frolicking at the forest’s edge. Little do they know, however, that the Lord of Darkness has dispatched his minions to capture the unicorns and sever their horns so that he may plunge the world into everlasting night.

The John Hughes film starred Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara and Jennifer Grey and became a surprise hit in 1986, grossing over $70 million, turning its actors into some of the biggest young stars in Hollywood and making Ferris Bueller one of pop culture's most beloved movie characters. If Ridley Scott stopped making movies immediately after Alien in 1979, he’d likely still be remembered as one of the great horror directors of all time. But I’m damn glad he didn’t stop there, because six years later he released a film that would forever shape my taste as a movie fan. And while his twisted fairytale Legend isn’t strictly horror, it has more than enough gorgeously spooky elements to enthrall any horror fan. Anytime it popped up on television I remember dropping everything and planting myself in front of the screen, ready to be enraptured by a world of fairies, goblins, and one of the most terrifying (yet captivating) villains ever put to screen.
Now, the seed for Legend actually predates Alien, as Scott first conceived the idea while he was filming The Duelists. The story took shape over the course of several years, with Scott...

“Bueller? Bueller?”
The season finale of Reunited Apart With Josh Gad answered that famous cry by reuniting the principal cast of that most ’80s of ’80s movies, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Matthew Broderick and costars Jennifer Grey, Alan Ruck and Mia Sara assembled 34 years on to talk about director John Hughes’ classic of teen escapism.
The highlights included host Gad goading Broderick into revisiting his most classic line from the movie. Broderick resisted, before finally delivering it from memory: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t look around once in a while, you might miss it.”
Not having seen each other since a chance encounter in New York 15 years before, Broderick and Ruck picked up like that was yesterday. The duo, who had worked together before the film, recalled auditioning with each other. Or, rather, Ruck recalled it blow-by-blow as Broderick laughed along.
