For me, the apotheosis of movie making. Some films are cooler, better made or held in higher acclaim but films with an emotional kick are the ones that really grab my attention and stay with me for a long time afterwards. Why does 'It's a Wonderful Life' work so well? Is it because it's a sentimental heartwarmer? Well, no. That's exactly not what it is and, if you think so, I'm not sure you've been paying attention to what's going on in the movie. This is less a film about a man who nearly loses it all and gets it back but about how the dreams of an idealistic, good man are crushed in his youth and early adulthood and yet recognises the blessings with which he has been installed in difficult circumstances. Just remember this, the film ends with us capturing a positive moment in George Bailey's life but the villain of the piece, Mr Potter, never receives a comeuppance. Now that's bold film-making.
