Dozens of top Hollywood creatives and activists have signed an open letter in response to the shuttering of production company Participant — imploring the industry to continue to effect change through film and television as the defunct company once did.
George Clooney, Aflonso Cuarón, Ava DuVernay, Jane Fonda, Regina King, Viola Davis, #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, Color of Change president Rashad Robinson and more are signators, in addition to groups like GLAAD and Human Rights Watch. The letter was coordinated by the National Domestic Workers Alliance (Ndwa), which collaborated with Participant and director Cuarón on a visibility campaign for his 2018 Oscar winner “Roma.”
“As we say goodbye to Participant, we must underscore that values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever,” the letter states. “There is a whole ecosystem of people, connected by the work of the last 20 years of Participant, ready to work with you.

For actors Evan Peters and Niecy Nash-Betts, as well as director Paris Barclay, the critical mission with Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was to shift the focus of the narrative around the serial killer away from Dahmer himself and toward his many victims, as well as the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police that allowed him to get away with his crimes.

Exclusive: Former ICM political strategist Brandon Sharp has launched Agenda, a management and production company that will be dedicated to advancing inclusive entertainment and media projects. The company will work with TV and film writers, actors, directors, musicians, authors, artists, public intellectuals, playwrights, and business founders from predominately untapped communities to realize their projects on more equitable grounds.
“Representation for representation’s sake is not enough,” said Sharp. “The strides we’ve made for people of color in front of and behind the camera are significant, but the business side of media and entertainment remains largely unchallenged. The people who stand to profit the most from the boon in ‘diverse’ content are not the originators of that content, and that has to change.”

Isbell’s brother, Errol Lindsey, was murdered at age 19 by Dahmer. She gave a victim impact statement during Dahmer’s 1992 sentencing, when the killer was given 15 consecutive life sentences. We have another look at Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer, and it’s just as haunting as the last one.
While the first trailer aimed to show how Dahmer lured and killed his victims, this new glimpse at Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Netflix series “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” gives us an idea of just how many times the notorious serial killer was able to evade authorities.
The trailer opens with Dahmer driving down the road with giant, black trash bags in the back seat of his car. When he’s pulled over by an officer, he says that the bags are full of clippings from the yard. He’s sent home and, though we don’t see what’s inside the bags, the ominous tone leads us to believe it’s another victim.
The video then cuts to Dahmer’s neighbor, played by Niecy Nash, who is begging...

Evan Peters is the latest actor to take on the role of notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and, as expected, his performance looks quite chilling.
Netflix released the first trailer on Friday for Ryan Murphy’s latest series, “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” In it, Peters’ version of Dahmer is determined to make sure his neighbors don’t find out about his nefarious activities.
The video opens with Dahmer bringing a man back to his apartment, who immediately complains about the smell emanating from the room. Behind him, Dahmer locks the door and closes in on the man and, while his murder isn’t shown, it’s heavily implied.

The Recording Academy announced today that its Grammy Awards will be the first major music award production to commit to the use of the contract addendums known as inclusion riders.

The Recording Academy announced Wednesday the introduction of an inclusion rider for production on the 2022 Grammy Awards telecast, a step to ensure that the production staff on the ceremony will be diverse at all levels of the show’s production.
The inclusion rider, which generally offers provisions to insure that a film or TV production’s hiring of cast and crew will be equal and diverse and draw from a wider pool, is in development now between the Recording Academy and Color of Change and is part of the Recording Academy’s larger #ChangeMusic campaign.
The rider will be an agreement between the Recording Academy and the production company for the Grammys, which will become the first major awards show to implement one. It will require the production company to audition, recruit and hire from a diverse pool for both onstage and offstage talent who have been historically and systematically excluded from the industry.

Prince Harry has landed his second new role in as many days — this time signing up to join a high-powered Aspen Institute commission on what it calls “information disorder.”
Prince Harry is one of 15 commissioners to join the not-for-profit’s initiative, which will consist of a six-month study into the “modern-day crisis” of mis- and disinformation in America.
The commission is co-chaired by journalist Katie Couric, cybersecurity expert Chris Krebs, and Rashad Robinson, the president of Color Of Change. Other commissioners include former Facebook executive Alex Stamos and James Murdoch’s wife Kathryn Murdoch.
It comes as Prince Harry has done little to hide his disdain for certain sections of the press, telling Oprah Winfrey this month that British tabloids are “bigoted” and create a “toxic environment” of “control and fear.”
His wife, Meghan Markle, added that press reporting is amplified by social media. “It was like the Wild, Wild West.

Editor’s Note: Rashad Robinson is president of racial-justice organization Color of Change. Founded in 2005, it has more than 7 million members. Last year, it collaborated with actor and producer Michael B. Jordan to create #ChangeHollywood, an initiative that aims to offer tangible ways to invest in anti-racist content and authentic Black stories, invest in Black talent and reinvest police funds to support Black communities. In a guest column ahead of Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, Robinson weighs in on the need for widespread industry change.
This week we are reminded that Hollywood, despite its calls for diversity and social change, continues to reinforce systems that overlook Black people’s creative luminosity in favor of the status quo. After the Golden Globe nominations and egregious snubs of Black creators and actors, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group responsible for choosing honorees, confirmed that it has zero Black members.

San Francisco/New Delhi, Jan 7 (Ians) As Big Tech miserably failed to spot, act and tackle the US Capitol chaos going viral and being live-streamed, voices grew louder on Thursday to remove President Donald Trump altogether from digital platforms for inciting the mob and staging the coup, saying blocking him for couple of hours won't be enough.
Several tech leaders and social activists called on Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to move beyond labelling Trump messages, and aggressively curb his posts amplifying and endorsing violence.
"Twitter and Facebook have to cut him (Trump) off. There are no legitimate equities left and labeling won't do it," Alex Stamos, Facebook's former chief security officer, said in a tweet.
"You've got blood on your hands, (Jack) and Zuck. For four years you've rationalized this terror. Inciting violent treason is not a free speech exercise. If you work at those companies,...

As cries for more inclusive, well-rounded representation continue to be important topics of conversation in the media, Color of Change and Family Story have released a new guide to aid in avoiding inaccurate and/or biased language that might turn society, or an audience, against Black people and Black families.
The guide, entitled “Changing the Narrative About Black Families,” builds upon the two organizations’ previous collaboration, “A Dangerous Distortion of Our Families: Representations of Families, by Race, in News and Opinion Media,” which found that media outlets were 1.5-times more likely to represent a white family as socially stabile and 1.3% more likely to associate Black family members with criminality. Other findings included that media outlets would incorrectly suggest that Black fathers are uninvolved with their families, depicting them as spending time with their kids in news images only 14% of the time, and misrepresent how many Black families were welfare recipients.

Ryan Murphy has set up his next project at Netflix.
The prolific Murphy and his producing partner Ian Brennan have received a greenlight from the streamer on a limited series titled “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”
The series already has Richard Jenkins attached to star, as well as Janet Mock and Carl Frankin attached to direct. Mock will also serve as a writer on the series.
“Monster” centers around Jeffrey Dahmer, one of America’s most notorious serial killers. It will be largely told from the point of view of Dahmer’s victims, and dive into the police incompetence and apathy that allowed the Wisconsin native to go on a killing spree which lasted over a decade into the early 1990s. The series, which dramatizes at least 10 instances where Dahmer was let go after being apprehended, will touch on white privilege, as Dahmer was repeatedly given a free pass by cops and judges.

The artists, entrepreneurs and pioneers on TheWrap’s 2020 Innovators List brought about meaningful change in a time when the coronavirus pandemic altered the world drastically. They adjusted to the worst case scenario and responded to the moment when America erupted in protest over racial injustices.
This year, actor-writer-director-producer Tyler Perry gave back to those in need while helping the industry get back to work, Rashad Robinson elevated his years-long fight for civil rights by putting pressure on Facebook and the major fall film festivals came together to collaborate on a shared platform of virtual cinema.
The individuals on this year’s list come from a variety of backgrounds and each have their own goals, but they all share an ambition to do something great and then surpass already lofty expectations. Congratulations to all of them.

More than six months after Louisville, Kentucky, resident Breonna Taylor was shot and killed in her own home, a grand jury handed down an indictment of one out of the three police officers who ended her life on March 13. The officer, Brett Hankison, who was accused of firing his weapon recklessly that day, was indicted on three counts of wanton endangerment, and none of the officers had been charged with the shooting of Taylor. After an unprecedented number of Black performers received Emmy nominations this year, a record number of Black performers also picked up actual Emmy trophies.
Out of the 18 acting awards handed out at the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, nine of them went to Black actors, which gives the performer parity with white actors, as no other people of color won this year.
This is a notable increase from last year, when 11.11% of acting winners were Black (16.67% Bipoc winners overall). All in all, the Television Academy has come a long way in the last few years: in 2013 there were zero Bipoc winners in the acting categories.
History was also made with Zendaya’s lead drama actress win for HBO’s “Euphoria.” It was also only the second time in the awards’ seven-plus decade history that a Black woman won that category. The first was Viola Davis in 2015 for “How To Get Away With Murder.

There’s a disparity among nominees of color on the Emmy ballot this year, which can be traced to a larger disconnect within the industry, and society at large.
The Television Academy nominated a record number of Black performers. But other non-white performers, including Latinx and Api, only made up 5.88% of nominees combined. Behind the scenes, the Television Academy only nominated 12.5% people of color in the narrative writing categories and 14.2% in the directing categories, and when it came to series nominations, only one came from a person of color in the showrunner position.
“People are voting inside of a media climate and some of the protests have made white people who are part of the nomination process think differently about how they were making decisions,” says Rashad Robinson, executive director, Color of Change. “I don’t want to discount what it means for Black performers to be recognized in ways...

Veteran journalists know that the public mood is quirky, so it’s always risky to report “a consensus.” A few days ago, for example, there seemed a “consensus” that Americans had lost confidence in their neighborhood cops. Further, their expectations about cops had been distorted by movies and television.
But then things became even more complicated: Donald Trump decided to mobilize an entirely new police force of uncertain origin and training, dispatching it to Portland, Seattle and other major cities. This left the public to figure out a new way to respond to “authority” and, for the media, a new strategy for covering the incursions.
Yet another complication: Only a year ago, the data reflected a decade-long decline in violent crime. Now suddenly the crime rate was exploding. And the rising numbers don’t begin to include the clashes stemming from new protests prompted by the arrival of Trump’s Troopers.

In honor of Juneteenth, we’ve gathered a list of special programming across several networks to commemorate the holiday that celebrates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, and delivered the news that all enslaved people were free. Juneteenth is still not recognized as a federal holiday, but it is recognized by several states — and this year, many companies are declaring it a paid holiday in light of the Black Lives Matter movement and national protesting that has taken place following the death of George Floyd.
