One Cannes ritual is IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond’s annual press lunch. IMAX is thriving in the global marketplace, with more than 1,700 screens in 90 countries, as audiences continue to recognize and embrace the global brand for giant film and digital cameras and big-screen formats. Dabney Coleman, the Emmy-winning character actor who starred in the 1980 comedy classic “9 to 5” and whose career in film and television spanned six decades, died Thursday at his home in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 92.
Coleman’s death was confirmed to Variety by his daughter, Quincy Coleman.
“My father crafted his time here on earth with a curious mind, a generous heart, and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity,” Quincy Coleman said in a statment. “As he lived, he moved through this final act of his life with elegance, excellence and mastery. A teacher, a hero, and a king, Dabney Coleman is a gift and blessing in life and in death as his spirit will shine through his work, his loved ones and his legacy… eternally. And always, ‘A goddamn, good looking man.'”

Closer in tone to the sharp adult series “BoJack Horseman” than to Illumination’s bland “Sing” franchise, Netflix’s “Thelma the Unicorn” avoids being rendered completely unoriginal by its overly familiar premise thanks to consistent splashes of acid humor and a plethora of wacky supporting characters. Reimagined from the popular 2015 children’s book by Aaron Blabey, this bright-colored fable concerns a female pony chasing musical stardom disguised as a horned magical creature. But by changing her identity to chase those ambitions, Thelma betrays herself and those who truly know her.
The adaptation marks the animated feature debut for co-directors Jared Hess and Lynn Wang. Hess, still best known for co-writing and directing the 2004 indie hit “Napoleon Dynamite,” received an Oscar nomination earlier this year for the handcrafted animated short “Ninety-Five Senses” about a Death Row inmate. By now, everyone knows that Taylor Swift has “a guy on the Chiefs,” but no, the NFL did not plan the 2024-2024 schedule for the Kansas City Chiefs to make it easier for Swift to attend the team’s games.
NFL VP of broadcast planning Mike North was asked about the matter during a conference call with reporters Thursday and while he acknowledged that the league did consider Swift’s Eras Tour while building the schedule (more on that below), it was not a factor when it came to the Chiefs.
That was despite the fact that the Chiefs are set to face the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo Nov. 17, just a short drive from Toronto, where Swift is set to perform her Eras Tour between Nov. 14 and 27.

Jacob Elordi Skips Cannes as Crying Paul Schrader Accepts 4-Minute Standing Ovation for ‘Oh, Canada’
Paul Schrader shed tears as his new film “Oh, Canada” earned a four-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival on Friday night.
Jacob Elordi was notably absent from the premiere, possibly because he is filming Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” in which he stars as The Monster. After the ovation finished, Schrader addressed Elordi not being there, saying: “I’m very happy with Richard, Uma, Jake — not here with us –and it all worked out. Im very happy to be back here on the Croisette.”
Elordi, whose star continues to rise after acclaimed turns in “Saltburn” and “Priscilla,” made his Cannes debut last year in Sean Price Williams’ road movie “The Sweet East.”
The drama tells the life story of a troubled writer, Leonard Fife, who at the end of his life reflects on his decision to flee to Canada to avoid the Vietnam War draft. Richard Gere plays the present-day Leonard,...

In director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s new biopic Back to Black, British costume designer PC Williams took on the monumental task of dressing Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse, as well as the rest of the cast. Named for Winehouse’s second and final studio album released in 2006, the film spans eight years in the life of the iconic singer, who passed away in 2011 at just 27 years old.
Winehouse left a tall fashion legacy with her unique mix of retro va-va-voom styles and sportswear. Caricature-like proportions were another signature — from a giant beehive, bold gold jewelry and teetering peep-toe pumps to diminutive halter dresses and ultra-skinny jeans. In 2010, the singer even collaborated with one of her favorite British labels, Fred Perry, on a 17-piece capsule line. The brand, featured heavily in the film, continues an ongoing collection to benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation. A 2021 Julien’s Auctions sale of some of the...

Paul Schrader’s Oh, Canada, the new drama that reunites the director with his American Gigalo star Richard Gere, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival Friday night, where it was welcomed with a three-minute-plus standing ovation for Schrader and his team at the Grand Lumiere Theatre. With typical Canadian politeness, the crowd even applauded the film’s producers.
Before the premiere, Schrader and the cast of Oh, Canada, including Richard Gere, and Uma Thurman, but not Jacob Elordi, had climbed the red carpet steps up the Palais to the sounds of the Canadian national anthem. Among the famous faces in the audience at the theater was Nathalie Emmanuel.
While the creative team received a warm welcome, the film itself was less warmly received, with only polite applause and a perfunctory standing ovation for Schrader and his cast. But there was a collection of whoops and cheers, and at least one “bravo!

A celebrity from the age of 11, Elizabeth Taylor was practiced at public relations for almost all her life, so there aren’t many personal revelations in Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes. But Nanette Burstein’s elegantly constructed documentary, mostly in Taylor’s own words backed by illuminating archival images, works as a lively bit of film history about movie stardom in the volatile 1960s as the studio system was fading and the media exploding.
The film — which premiered at Cannes in the Cannes Classics sidebar — is based on 40 hours of recently rediscovered audiotapes, recordings Taylor made in the mid-1960s for a ghost-written memoir (long out of print). It was the most frenzied moment of her fame, when she was coming off the paparazzi-fueled scandal that was Cleopatra. Taylor, who died in 2011, recalls her many marriages — four when she made these recordings, since she was on the first of two...

Paul Schrader’s 1999 adaptation of novelist Russell Banks’ Affliction, led by scorching performances from Nick Nolte and James Coburn, was an unsettlingly bleak meeting of two writers who share a fascination with conflicted morality and complicated relationships pushed to dark extremes. But Schrader’s return to the late author’s work, this time the 2021 novel Foregone, yields fewer rewards. For a film about big themes like mortality, memory, truth and redemption, Oh, Canada feels both slight and stubbornly page-bound, too unsatisfyingly fleshed out to give its actors meat to chew on.
Published two years before Banks’ death in early 2023, the book is an intimate portrait of a man contemplating his legacy while approaching the end of his life. It’s easy to see what drew Schrader to the story, given his own pandemic health scares and the diagnosis of his wife, the actress Mary Beth Hurt, with Alzheimer’s. But...

Straying from the hotheaded “Taxi Driver” style that has dominated much of his career, Paul Schrader pays ruminative and respectful tribute to his late friend, novelist Russell Banks, who gave the writer-director the raw material for one of his best films, “Affliction” — and now, for one of his best films in years. Adapted from Banks’ “Foregone” (and given the title the author told Schrader he wanted for the book), “Oh, Canada” presents a dying artist’s final testimony as a multifaceted film-within-a-film, honoring Banks while also revealing so many of Schrader’s own thoughts on mortality.

Jessica Biel was so invested in making The Sinner that she was ready to quit Hollywood if the anthology series didn’t sell.
Biel, who earned an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination for her season one role as Cora Tennetti and continued to executive produce the anthology series through its four seasons at USA, detailed on podcast The Bright Side how much working on the show meant to her.
The actress recalled that “doors did not open at all” for her production company, Iron Ocean, which she started with her business partner Michelle Purple 20 years ago. For the first 10 years, they experienced “almost no success at all” she said.
Though the production company was able to make the 2012 film The Tall Man, Biel said it wasn’t until “many years later” that they were introduced to The Sinner, which turned out to be Iron Ocean’s first major venture into TV.

Paramount Global top communications veteran Julia Phelps, who most recently served as executive vp, chief communications and corporate marketing officer of the entertainment conglomerate, will be leaving the company at the end of the month.
The departure of Phelps, who has been known as a strategic and collaborative executive, comes after the exit of CEO Bob Bakish, who was replaced by an Office of the CEO, and at a time when the future of Paramount remains in industry focus. The sector giant, controlled by Shari Redstone’s National Amusements, has been in talks about a potential sale to David Ellison’s Skydance Media, as well as Sony with Apollo Global Management.
Phelps served in increasingly senior roles at Paramount Global, previously known as ViacomCBS, and its predecessors. She rose to a top communications role at Viacom, which merged with CBS Corp. in late 2019. She oversaw Paramount’s communications team through the Viacom-CBS merger,...

Mamoudou Athie can practically taste the lobster rolls from the Carlton hotel. He smiles wistfully as he taps into that sense memory of his first trip to the Cannes Film Festival. In 2023, Athie voiced the lead role in Disney-Pixar’s “Elemental,” which closed the fest. And he’s returning this week as part of the first-rate ensemble of Yorgos Lanthimos’ offbeat movie “Kinds of Kindness.”
Discussion of the crustacean-filled dish might seem irrelevant, but it’s perhaps not incidental. Athie begins our conversation by revealing that his first encounter with Lanthimos’ unique sensibilities was 2015’s “The Lobster.” The Mauritanian American actor, who was studying at Yale School of Drama at the time, was captivated by the originality of the material and the conviction the filmmaker brought to his craft.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness,” starring Emma Stone, freaked out Cannes Film Festival on Friday night with an anthology of stories about sex cults, cannibalism and general debauchery.
Lanthimos’ follow-up to “Poor Things” earned a 4.5-minute standing ovation, with the director and his cast — including Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and Joe Alwyn — leaving while the applause was still going. “Kinds of Kindness” tells three distinctive stories with cast members playing different roles in each. There were a few walkouts during the Cannes premiere, most of them coming after the film’s gorier, second chapter. Lanthimos abruptly left the screening and didn’t speak to audience members once the clapping stopped.
The film, like many of Lanthimos’ avant-garde offerings, overflows with outré plot twists as well as some outrageous moments — like Chau licking sweat off her followers as part of a cult ritual, a man who becomes...

Yorgos Lanthimos revealed his particular brand of niceness as the Cannes Film Festival presented the world premiere of his twisted Kinds of Kindness on Friday night.
The film, which reunites The Favourite and Poor Things director Lanthimos and star Emma Stone, was greeted with a 4-minute ovation inside the packed Grand Lumiere Theatre. As far as Cannes ovations go, that’s on the short end of the spectrum (Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis clocked in at 10 minutes Thursday night, while at Venice last year, Lanthimos’ Poor Things received minutes of cheers). Still, basking in the applause were Lanthimos and Stone, fellow Poor Things alums Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, plus Jesse Plemons, Mamoudou Athie, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn and Hunter Schafer. Others in attendance including Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Nomadland filmmaker Chloe Zhao and Ukrainian 20 days in Mariupol documentarian Mstyslav Chernov.

A hot, strong summer wind is the overriding soundtrack to “Three Kilometers to the End of the World” — the kind of dry, whirring weather that swallows conversations held even a short distance away, and carries stray, light objects far from where they meant to land. For 17-year-old Adi, however, it’s not loud enough to keep his secrets safe, nor heavy enough to lift and float him away from the home in which he feels increasingly imprisoned. A rural village in thrall to the Romanian Orthodox Church proves as hostile an environment as you’d expect for a closeted gay teen in writer-director Emanuel Pârvu’s claustrophobic study of personal and institutional prejudice closing in on a community misfit: If the breeze would just die down for a second, you might hear Adi’s inner clock tensely counting down his slim shot at freedom.

Timed to coincide with TV’s upfronts in New York, a real estate-focused event that also calls itself the Upfronts — a luxury property reveal thrown by The Society Group — took over The Wallis in Beverly Hills on May 15. [This story contains spoilers for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.]
Kevin Durand is all smiles right now. The Thunder Bay native doesn’t have the energy of an actor who’s nearly three decades into their career. If you didn’t know any better, his enthusiasm would lead you to believe that he’s a wide-eyed and bushy-tailed newcomer. With recent projects like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Abigail and the upcoming reboot of The Naked Gun, it’s understandable why Durand is savoring this moment that harks back to when Lost introduced his unforgiving mercenary Martin Keamy in season four (2008).
With Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes outperforming opening weekend box office expectations at $58.4 million, the long-term outlook for the sci-fi franchise is rather sunny right now, and despite his cliff-falling ending, Durand is not ruling out a return for his baddie, Proximus Caesar.

A New Mexico judge on Friday asked a series of skeptical questions of the prosecutor in the Alec Baldwin manslaughter case, suggesting she might decide to throw out the indictment.
Baldwin is scheduled to face a trial in Santa Fe in July for negligently pointing a gun at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and pulling the trigger. In New Mexico, involuntary manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison.
Baldwin’s defense has asked Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer to throw out the case, arguing that prosecutors failed to make defense witnesses available to the grand jury.
At a hearing on Friday, Marlowe Sommer asked the prosecutor, Kari Morrissey, why she had not made more of an effort to contact those witnesses before the grand jury proceeding.
“Common sense tells me you should have reached out ahead of time,” she said.
The judge also questioned why Morrissey had cut off a witness...

Elle King has now shared the backstory behind her infamous drunken performance for Dolly Parton’s birthday tribute at the Grand Ole Opry.
While appearing on the latest episode of Chelsea Handler’s Dear Chelsea podcast, the singer opened up about her personal struggles behind the scenes. She disclosed that it was her “first time” discussing the incident publicly because she had to “just chill” after receiving so much backlash on social media.
She pointed out that she “did a big no-no” because she not only cussed onstage while “hammered” at the storied venue, but it was also the country icon’s big birthday tribute.
“I had been going through something very heavy and traumatic in my life at the time, and that day was a really big day dealing with what I was going through — and that I’m still going through — and I suffer from like, severe Ptsd,...

The Cannes competition line-up has premiered some outstanding Romanian films over the last 20 years, works on the very foamy, frothy edge of the Romanian New Wave. But this year’s talky, ensemble-driven neo-realist entrant, Three Kilometers to the End of the World, isn’t on the same level as The Death of Mr. Lazarescu or 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.
Still, actor-turned-director Emanuel Parvu (Meda or The Not So Bright Side of Things) has fashioned the kind of competent if predictable drama that will tick the right boxes for festival regulars hungry for work that affirms their prejudices against bigoted hicks in all the fly-over countries of the world. A drama about a vicious beating that ends up turning over rocks that hide corruption and cruelty, Three Kilometers at least wrings maximum benefit from its beautiful Danube Delta location, a sun-dappled marshland full of whispering reeds fringed by unspoiled beaches. If...

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees wrapped up its third week of negotiations with Hollywood’s major studios and streamers on a new Basic Agreement on Thursday, but has yet to reach a deal.
In a message to members on Friday, the union said it expects to add additional bargaining days to the schedule in June. The contract is due to expire on July 31, and the union has repeatedly stated it does not intend to grant an extension.
The Basic Agreement covers 45,000 to 50,000 crew members, largely based in Los Angeles, from 13 local unions. The major issues on the table include funding of the union benefit plans, wage increases, artificial intelligence protections, and safety measures.
“We are working toward setting additional bargaining dates to continue to negotiate the deal our members deserve,” Matt Loeb, the international president of IATSE, said in the message.
Outward signs thus far have indicated that...

Though IATSE had initially planned to conclude its general negotiations for West Coast Locals on Thursday, the day came and went without a deal, the union announced on Friday.
Instead, talks over key issues like wages, AI and working conditions have been paused for now and additional bargaining dates are expected to be scheduled for early June.
“We are working toward setting additional bargaining dates to continue to negotiate the deal our members deserve,” international IATSE president Matthew Loeb said in a statement on Friday. “Talks remain ongoing and we are focused on achieving the goals we came to the table with: improved wages and safer working conditions, consistent funding for our benefit plans, reasonable AI and subcontracting protections, and appropriate enhancements to our Video Tape Agreement and Side Letters.”
The 13 West Coast Locals, which resumed negotiations over shared issues with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on...

The final episodes of Young Sheldon drew a big crowd for CBS.
The comedy ended its seven-season run Thursday night with 9.32 million viewers for its series finale, according to final same-day ratings from Nielsen (which don’t include streaming). That’s the biggest same-day audience for the show in four years — since its third season finale on April 30, 2020.
Young Sheldon ended with a pair of episodes, and the first drew almost as many viewers (9.15 million) at 8 p.m. Et/Pt as the 8:30 p.m. finale. The two episodes rank second and third in same-day viewers among all scripted series this season, behind only the post-Super Bowl premiere of Tracker. (Both episodes adjusted up from Nielsen’s preliminary figures, which had them at 8.82 million viewers for the 8 p.m. installment and 8.95 million for the finale.)
Sheldon also recorded its two best showings of the season among adults 18-49, scoring a...
