GOD's LAND
Inspired by the true story of the 'God Saves the Earth Flying Saucer Foundation,' GOD's LAND is a gentle comedy of cultural dislocation; a bittersweet story about searching for faith in strange places.
Teacher Chen and his followers are beckoned from Taiwan to Garland, Texas by God to deliver a message of eternal love, space travel and the end of the world. There they also await the return of Jesus. While they wait they do their best to blend in: they buy land, dress in large white cowboy hats and jumpsuits and shop for what they need at malls, just like real Texans.
This feature length story is told from the point of view of Xiu, the wife of Hou, one of the Teachers most fervent followers. While he accepts the teacherÂ’s predictions with enthusiasm, she sees only a loopy old man who speaks to God through the palm of his hand and waits for Jesus to take them away in his invisible spaceship. She becomes increasingly concerned amidst rumors of a mass suicide for the safety of her young son, her husband and herself. In order for the real search for spiritual truth to begin, one has to choose to surrender.
