Frank (2014)
Extremely uneventful
I watched this based purely on the IMDb score thinking to myself "It'll be different". Well different it was. I can honestly say that at no time did it really catch me or keep me even remotely entertained.
By the time I had got a good bit through I just thought "Well I've got this far................"
Couldn't and wouldn't recommend it. Only thing i found relatively interesting was one of the female characters that I can't remember her name (shows how interested I was) had a nice boobs. Sad day when that is the highlight of your movie.
Ending was gash too. It just stopped.
Alienated (2015)
Strangely realistic
I can't say I'm a big review writer, nor can I speak for everyone because my partner fell asleep during this movie but bear with me. I watched it because I had recently given up on Apollo 18 and it happened to be lumped into the same genre and couldn't be bother looking any further. I read the reviews on it after watching, which doesn't make sense but the reviews did and I'll explain. If you are in a relationship now or have been in a long term relationship before then you will understand what the characters are getting at. There are no special effects and nothing that particularly stands out at all I hate to admit BUT it did provide something. It more or less revolves round a couple trying to understand each other and get frustrated with each other in the process. Morbid curiosity kept me watching as the married couple tore into each other and if I got one thing from the movie it's a few tips/lines on how to defuse my next argument with my other half.
For that it's worth a 6.
Ran (1985)
Fell slightly short
Based on King Lear everyone has said, maybe deliberately missing out the references to actual Japanese feudalism and in part to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Not a bad movie but certainly not a 10 out of ten. Seven Samurai captured the audience a lot better with the linking to characters and the overall 'personal' plot. This movie considering it was made around 30 years later has a lot to answer for in terms of general acting and effects. Das Boot is older for example and is streets ahead in terms of cinematography and audience enthralment.
Seven out of ten. Max.
Shichinin no samurai (1954)
Compared to most of todays offerings...........
Tons of reviews on this movie. You're never going to get everyone to like something so its a case of suck it and see. First off , I'm not a big movie buff nor do I claim to be any expert reviewer but what I can say is, for its year (1954) it was way ahead of its time. If this same movie was made NOW with the a story but in a slightly different setting it would be massive. Change the samurai for an all star cast and give them guns and it would be a sure fire hit with the 'gung ho yeehaaa! brigade that have given this film one star. 3 or 4 I could get as its subtitled and some parts of the dialogue will be missing but one? Obviously expecting sword-wielding, superhero-type individuals who battle their way through the story, often triumphing over a seemingly overwhelming host of foes including laser firing aliens with a plethora of special effects.
If you like a moving story and characters that come to life as it unfolds then watch this film.
Battle of the Bulge (1965)
Too much criticism from the 'thick glasses' brigade.
Just scanning through the reviews of this movie there and cannot believe the amount of tank top wearing, nerdy "it's not historically accurate" comments. If you're looking for history read a book.Do the same reviewers complain about 'Terminators' lack of mechanical realism?
Nowhere was it stated that Robert Shaw and co were making a documentary. The film is a bit corny here and there. The story is basic and the acting a little wooden here and there but it's entertaining. Isn't that what films are supposed to be? Entertainment? If it was that bad a show it would be dead and buried.People wouldn't be buying the DVD and talking about it forty odd years later.
Das Boot (1981)
One of the BEST war movies ever
If you've never seen this movie then beg, borrow or steal a copy. It'll actually make you admire/feel sympathy for the German Serviceman caught up, in what was the most horrific of wars. Tense, realistic and gripping this one off has yet to be bettered in my opinion. The start doesn't really remind you of a war movie but believe me thats armed forces behaviour all right. As WW2 progressed Hitler drew on ever younger recruits and the historical accuracies are in abundance for a change. This film makes modern junk like the new Pearl harbour look limp wristed.
As shocking as the statistics are (30000 out of 40000 never returned) It makes you wonder why so many young men volunteered for the Untersee boot 'Kreigsmarine'. Pride and patriotism counts for everything. Its a 10 out of 10 for me.
Don't take my word for it. Watch it.
