The Piano (1993)
A movie for women by a woman
This movie is a roadmap to most women's hearts. Men take note. I find it funny some reviewers are shocked by Ada's behaviour, as women aren't sexual beings like men. That's just the point. Women are not just wives and usufull partners, they have their wants and needs and its not a trip to the hairdresser or a new dress; or a piano really. We need a Baines in our lives and a happy husband will get this and will feed the inner wildling that most women have in them. Watch this movie with your wife or girlfriend, serve her a lovely drink and then make love to her. This movie is decades old but still up to date. It's beautiful, so well made in every aspect, fantastic actors and just a sensual feast for all the senses. I invite all men to watch it and try to understand it, it will help you to understand the women in your life.
Fleabag (2016)
A bandaid for the soul
With all the rubbish on tv and the internet these days, this show is such a relief. Its funny and sensitive in just the right way. So cleverly written and such nice actors. The characters behave like actual humans and its refreshing. The British are so very good at this, they take emotions seriously but they always present it in an humoristic way to make it easier to digest. This show is very funny but actually deals with some real feelings and situations. It uplifted my soul and I absolutely love it. I do think that Fleabag deserved to stay with the priest, a connection like that come from God directly and they should have accepted the gift. That said the ending is still perfect as it is. I fully recommend and I look forward to watching it again.
The Northman (2022)
A viking fever dream
So viewers didn't get this one I guess? I was completely immersed and the story was unpredictable. At the start you think you know where it is going but it really takes a different direction in the middle. From a classic action movie to a more sensitive, psychological story. The themes are classic and a mix between Beowulf and Hamlet. Even the names.... Amleth the Bear Wolf made me think of other stories. I don't know if it was on purpose but it gave the movie weight and pathos. It feels like a Shakespearean play or a Greek saga. I think it respects the Viking culture more than other movies and series exept for Vikings on the history channel. Alexander Skarsgard was the obvious choice for this role and he does it well. Anna Taylor Joy is very good as usual. Nicole Kidman was good but the plastic surgery has made her impossible to look at. Fjolnir was very good as well. Immersive, classic drama that makes you think about vengeance, love and family. Love in the end wins even in the harsh Viking world. Great movie, well made but not an easy action flick. If you like Shakespeare and the classics you will like this.
House of the Dragon: The Heirs of the Dragon (2022)
Good but could do without the excessive violence
Ok, it is already pretty gripping but the problem is the overuse of gore and nudity. This is based on European history I guess? Why than make it worse than reality? Rome is a series that was really graphic but the violence was necessary and still tastefully done. They keep overusing violence and nudity as if the the show's creators think we wouldn't watch it otherwise.
La princesse de Montpensier (2010)
Pretty but unrealistic....
While watching this I kept comparing it to la Reine Margot. Same period, same subject matter. And the main actress is very beautiful and competent enough but the screenplay is not great. The princess makes such weird and illogical decisions. Women can put up with a lot more than what this so called strong willed woman much put up with. She is basically being pretty silly and disappointed in love. No reason to retract from live. Also her husband was perfectly reasonable especially for the age. Not reason to treat him with such unkindness. Also why not just have your fun with The Guise and than continue living. Everything in La Reine Margot is more passionate, brutal, kind, realistic and more human in the end. The Princesse de Monpensier is not the best the French can do. Nice horses though...
The Gilded Age (2022)
Really not that bad
Ok, it was obvious everyone was going to compare this with Downton Abbey which was good but definitely not flawless. It was a high end soap opera. If the Gilded Age is just that, then what is the problem? It don't think its trying to be anything else really. It's good looking entertainment and what's wrong with that? Let's give it some time and the benefit of the doubt. There are worse things to look at. Sometimes you need 'The Knick' and sometimes you need this. It's pretty, light and entertaining and pretty well made, let's be honest. I will keep watching, it sure as hell beats watching the news and the likes of Putin and Covid-19.
The White Lotus (2021)
Fascinating trainwreck
Yeah I liked this show. I just couldn't look away from the carnage. Also because lot's of what is brought up will be recognizable for lot's of people. People who found the characters impossible to like, have a very naive view on humanity or esteem themselves much to high. I liked it because it shows the ugliness and beauty of life and the imperfection of most of us. We just make do with what we have. That said let's try to be nicer people on the whole, it will prevent lots of problems.
Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
Just so boring
Well everything has been said really and I could have forgiven everything if this movie hadn't been that boring. It's a shame too because Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart where such interesting women and characters. They deserve much more. I think Margot Robbie has the right look for Elizabeth but keep in mind Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn and you see how lackluster Robbie's portrayal was. Saoirse Ronan was ok but to young and modern to play Mary Stuart. She didn't behave as a powerful woman, why on earth would she choose a wimp like Darnley maybe for his pretty hair?
I liked Riccio the minstrel the most because he has charm and beauty and was easy on the eyes and ears. I didn't mind him being a cross dresser, it doesn't hurt the story. But that's it. Waste of money and actors. Maybe the BBC can make a good miniseries one day.
Den skaldede frisør (2012)
This lovley little movie made me cry a grey afternoon
I didn't even know this movie existed but I watched it one afternoon on Arte. It is romantic without being to sweet. It on the level of Four weddings and a Funeral. It is sweet without being overly sweet. Maybe it is the Danish origins that make it so relatable. The actress playing Ida is wonderful, what a stunning woman and Pierce Brosnan, well he still got it. It would marry him in a heartbeat! I think lot's of people will find something that they relate to in this movie. It's the imperfection of the families that makes this movies to heartwarming. Please watch this on a grey afternoon when you need a little boost. Lovely movie.
The Outsider (2020)
Great story, well made and yes you need to use your brain
So typical for people to love something and when it gets more complicated they don't. Have some patience and put your brain to use. It is something we are not used to anymore, everything is fast satisfaction. I have loved Stephen King since I borrowed the scary books from my brother as a kid. The atmosphere he puts in his stories is uncanny. This series is well made, takes its time as has the King uncomfortable atmosphere all over it. It is very good, dark and has some nice heroes in it. I am so used to Game of Thrones killing heroes off that I am constantly scared that something will happen to them. Even I have become used to the modern binge series. Just take you time, wait for it and enjoy.
Brimstone (2016)
Dark, compelling and realistic
Just saw this movie and although not perfect is definitely packs a punch. It is beautifully made and it captured my attention till the end. I think the end of the.reverend is underwhelming and the ending perhaps unnecessary but the acting of everyone is good or great. Very impressed by young Joanna and Dakota Fanning. It doesn't deserve the bad reviews. Viewers wonder why the violence is necessary? As if real life isn't that violent? People and animals get brutally killed every day, women get raped and killed every day, priest abuse children, fathers abuse daughters, good men get killed. It is what happened and it is still happening now. Religion often only makes things worse as it often gives evil a reason to be evil. Religion isn't evil in itself, but it gets used so often to do evil. If you can't watch this it means you don't understand what humans are capable of. This is a warning against evil, religion used for evil and violence against the weak. Impressive movie, go and see it if you dare.
