Irma Vep (2022)
Fantastic pilot!!
(At the time of this review, only the pilot has been released)
I can't recall the last time I've watched a series pilot so well-written and with such beautiful cinematography and acting. Those familiar with and appreciative of Assayas's filmography will find much to savour here. And as he is typically a more character-driven writer, the series medium may turn out to be more appropriate for his style, giving him far more space to work his magic.
Alicia Vikander is front and center of the show, as beautiful and engaging as ever. She appears in virtually every scene, and I have to wonder if, like series normally do, he's going to branch out into the lives of any of the others. Viewers such as myself like to switch between multiple viewpoints in the course of an episode. While Irma Vep is typical of an HBO production for being a bit provocative in its themes, it stands apart for its careful pacing (note the many bored reviewers here) and the relative dryness or subtlety of the plot.
Eagerly awaiting many more episodes!
