Feuchtgebiete (2013)
Eh
It's a colourful movie. A fun time. Strange at times. Nasty at times. A quick watch.
It's a 6, but don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. Wouldn't recommend it for anyone as it's hard to explain this film without being judged. In a way, when I was explaining the plot of this movie to my friend, it felt like explaining and recommending a porno. So keep that in mind.
I liked the visual aspect, the sound design. Then you might ask, but why is it a 6, oh mighty commentator? Because of the themes. You see, my dear reader, this movie tries to be something more than just a NSFW movie - it's a coming of age story. "Avatar" level storytelling - nature=good, destroy=bad. Everything thematically is told to us by Helen. No need to figure any underlying story out - we're too dumb, so Helen (she's the protagonist) will tell us everything. It goes on for the majority of the movie, except until the very end, when Helen doesn't state upfront everything - but by then, the interest is gone. So is gone the further analyzing, as you can see through the plot clearly. No need to ponder even 5 minutes. Movie finishes and you come out knowing about the character and the plot and its themes more than the staff who worked on the film probably knew.
And it's a shame, because there certainly are interesting visuals, but when the movie's set up in a way that teaches its audience just to observe and not to think, you can't expect me to walk out and spend the rest of my night thinking about that scene, when Helen jumped into what appeared to be an empty pool. Did she die? But why was the story continuing? Was it the future?... There was no set up for that. You didn't teach me that. Most movies (the ones that want to make you think, at least) don't need to worry about that, because the story itself evolves in a way that rewards analyzation. In this film, the analysis is not needed - you're given all the answers without putting any work.
But I still enjoyed "Wetlands" as a fun, but secretive pre-sleep movie.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
It's good
Saw it recently. I hoped the hype would pay off. And it did only halfway. It's not bad, it's actually pretty good. But that's it. Just good. Not spectacular.
The only thing special in the movie is the child's acting. The twist wasn't mind-exploding, guessed it an hour into the movie. Nothing was really dug deep, every part of the movie was fairly shallow. But it's a fun watch. Just don't bite into the hype.
The Aviator (2004)
Probably the best work of Leonardo
Leo should have gotten an oscar for this movie, not 10+ years later. He portrays an eccentric very well, no surprise about that, however the pleasantly surprising thing was him having to play someone, who has OCD.
Scorsese had played the movie's visuals fantastically, with original composition and framework. Even though maybe none actors shone as bright as Leo, all of them delivered in such a way it didn't ruin the flow of the movie.
Just a must watch, taking 2 stars of because of some mediocre acting and cgi that just can't hold up. But it doesn't take away from the movie, far from it...
Martyrs (2008)
Amazing
Great. Amazing. A must see. At times silly, with noticable bad acting, at times just too much. But with all of it's cons, the pros are uncountable.
It's gory, tense, stressful, sad and relieving.
It's a must see
Raging Bull (1980)
I haven't finished watching, but...
It's not a bad movie. It's actually pretty great. No movie has portrayed boxing the way this one has, however (and a big one, as you can see from my rating) it's not for everyone. Black and white, some still shots, an occasional color gives the movie charm, but it's slow paced, seems to be leading to nowhere. That's why I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Watched an hour or so, but watching the mediocre acting and not so great dialogue, weird actions from characters, I was a bit dissapointed. But I hope my review doesn't hold you back from watching the movie. You should see at least an hour of. Or maybe even finish.
And hey, maybe one day I'll decide to watch it again. But this time fully.
The Godfather (1972)
What a movie
I'm not a fan of mafia movies. Didn't enjoy Good feelas, Once upon a time in America. However this one is a masterpiece. A blessing to watch. A joy.
I'm only giving a 9 because I didn't understand one of the events in Italy. But I think upon rewatching and rethinking, I'll be quick to change my score to a 10.
Time passed quickly while watching this one. And to say those 3 hours were impactful would be an understatement. A must to see. Definetly a diamond in the mountain of gangster movies.
Absolutely the best performance from Al Pacino. He was best when he was young.
Donnie Brasco (1997)
A movie not for everyone
Recently I've been watching movies from a list named "Movies you need to watch" or something like that. And I noticed that a lot of gangster, mafia related ones are listed there.
Because of the list, I've seen quite a few of them. And every single one has just blurred into a single movie. This one isn't an exception.
It's a mafia movie. Nothing special, in my opinion. Although I'm not a fan for these types of movies. Everything shown in it was average. The ending was pretty neat, but nothing else.
This is a short review, but for gangster movie fans out there - you will like it. For others - prepare yourself for 2 hours and 27 minutes of "meh"-ness.
