Bros (2022)
Still loved it
Laugh out loud funny, honest and edgy. But most importantly, human. It depicts characters with real flaws. People, stop taking it so seriously. It's a gay rom-com, a first of its kind in mainstream Hollywood and it should be celebrated! Is it perfect?? It was pretty perfect to me.
Eichner plays your typical angry gay while it was so good to see Macfarlane in something again (geez, he's buffed up). The supporting cast offered so much humour as well. It was great to see members of the LQBTQIA community and their allies on screen together.
A lot of people complained it was a little 'too gay'. Erm... have we ever complained that rom-coms were 'too straight'? This film was made by gays for gays. Enjoy it!
Golden Years (2016)
Light hearted fun
It's a serious issue covered in a most light hearted and lovely manner.
Saint Frances (2019)
Brilliant film!
Unexpectedly brilliant. What a revelation. Brilliantly acted and so understated. Really loved it.
The Witches (2020)
Light entertainment.
Ok, first the good things about the film...
1. Octavia Spencer. Hilarious. Just hilarious.
2. Kirsten Chenoweth adds a certain Southern charm and in my humble opinion, a welcome addition to the cast of characters.
3. Chris Rock as the narrator. He normally gets on my nerves a tiny bit but I thought he was perfect in it.
4. Stanley Tucci can do no wrong in my eyes. Even when his willy is being bitten by a rat.
Ok, now let's address the glaringly obvious flaws of this film...
1. Anne Hathaway. No she was never going to measure up to Angelica Houston but to fall this short is a travesty. Her accent is absolutely disastrous and that's not the worst of it. She TOTALLY overacted and brought absolutely NO class to the role of the Grand High Witch.
2. The CGI. What the hell were they thinking?! Again, totally overdone and unnecessary. Surely they could have got a trained cat for goodness sake.
Overall, I thought it was enjoyable. I enjoyed the first one for different reasons. But I still enjoyed it.
The Perfection (2018)
Interesting w good plot twists.
I really enjoyed the film. It was wonderful to see Steven Weber back in mainstream films. Always liked him as an actor. Alison Williams does a good job as well.
Cake (2014)
Sets Aniston apart as an actress.
Her character couldn't be further removed from Rachel Green. She carries the role brilliantly. No, this isn't a light hearted movie. No it doesn't 'offer hope'. It is however a very realistic portrait of depression, suffering with chronic pain and grief.
I See You (2019)
Unexpected find
Very good thriller from start to finish. And not just because of Helen Hunt's botched face lift! Unexpected plot twist and I found myself almost rooting for the villain. Almost... :-)
Sex and the City 2 (2010)
Lighthearted Fun
Ok so the film is a little culturally insensitive, it's not meant to be critiqued by Brian Cox. It's funny, it actually deals with relevant issues and more importantly, it was a feast for the eyes. From the scenery to the outfits to the men (& by men I mean Chris Noth's tanned and shirtless scenes and the delightful Max Ryan in his final scene! Oi veh!!), it was sumptuous for the eyes.
I really appreciated the film tackling with issues ranging from Samantha's ageing woes and Miranda's sexual discrimination at work to Charlotte's insecurities about her marriage. Carrie was always my least favourite character in this so the one minor annoyance was Big's (I'm sorry, I still can't call him 'John') reaction to her relentlessly spoiled, selfish behaviour. But other than that, I laughed at a film that doesn't take itself too seriously. Maybe some of the other reviewers could do the same.
Papi Chulo (2018)
Absolutely loved it.
Matt Bomer can actually act. This film really rigged on my heartstrings. Through love and loss, a man's mental breakdown is charted through his journey to numb the pain. It's actually really touching.
The Sinner (2017)
2nd season not as good
I'll keep it simple, the 2nd season was poor by comparison. I've never seen Natalie Paul in anything else but she was very poor in this. Barely able to show any emotion. Pullman is his usual understated yet remarkable self. The young actor does very well.
