A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006)
Hard going...!
I saw this film yesterday in Greenwich, London. The film was very dark and bleak in many places, the atmosphere in the cinema reflected this - people were concentrating on the film rather than talking amongst themselves which is surely a good thing.
The subject matter of the movie wasn't lighthearted in any way, and the director had chosen to use an enormous variety of narratives in order to tell the story - it required a lot of concentration to keep up with the constantly shifting styles. In other words, it was pretty hard going. But at the same time it was very realistic and showed the incredibly rough lifestyle that some children are simply born into, and their struggles to survive.
My only criticism is that whenever the film skips into the future, the adult actors look absolutely nothing like their younger teenage counterparts with only one exception; Laurie. This totally suspends the audience's belief in the film.
An Inconvenient Truth (2006)
Truly, truly eye-opening.
I saw this film today in Leicester Square in London and I can truly say it's the most powerful film I've ever seen.
It's hard-hitting and speaks on an easy accessible level to every single type of person - no matter where they live, or how old they are, or what they do for a living.
It's informative, educational and entertaining and shows us the true extent of the damage that's being caused to our planet right now.
And yes, it paints a pretty bleak picture in some parts but it also contains hope and guidance, telling people that they already possess the power and the tools to make the right changes happen.
See this film - and encourage everyone you know to see it. You'll be glad you did.
Big Fat Liar (2002)
A fun film
This isn't a life-changing movie; it's not an epic, or anything like that. But it's entertaining, and it's fun. It's a film that the whole family can watch together, and at the moment there are precious few kid-suitable films that DON'T have a love story in them! It tells a good story in a lighthearted way without trying to dazzle the audience with over-the-top special effects, like lots of films these days are. It's got some fairly good acting in, and all the music that's been used fits in pretty well with the movie content. The acting is quite good too, the actors look comfortable and believable in their surroundings and most importantly the jokes are actually funny. I'd recommend it for people of all ages - it certainly made me laugh. :)
