Crank (2006)
Great concept, aged like Michael Jackson Tattoos
The idea of a guy having to keep his adrenaline running high at all times would lend itself to some great action, comedy and possibly creative visuals. This isn't that movie, unfortunately. A lot of it has to do with the movie just not looking good in the year of our lord 2023. Usually I try to be forgiving of technological set backs due to time, but not gonna lie this movie really puts it to the test. Whats worse is that this movie features a public r*pe scene that's meant to be treated as this weird spectacle thats just uncomfortable to watch in today's climate. Overall, the movie feels like it was made by edge-lord early 2000s teens, making it redundant to say "in a bad way."
The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder: Curved (2023)
God, the review bombs are ridiculous
I hardly ever write reviews for individual episodes of tv shows, however, I had to make an exception with this one. Okay, it may not be the most well-written episode of the series (I think more of that is in season 1 if I'm being honest), but what's impressing me the most is the animation. Before checking out this show, you know I had to watch the original to see what I'm comparing the reboot/sequel to. While watching the original though, I began to develop a worry that the animation being very expressive and of its time (in a good way) wouldnt get translated into the new show and would end up being being polished but lacking wide character expressions. That worry has been put to rest and particularly in this episode where we get shots where you can tell care and attention went into giving characters extra frames for wider expressions. To reiterate the title of this review, while the writing from the show can range from good and okay, the animation at least delivers.
The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder (2022)
Wow, this got review bombed to hell
Ayo, this is one of those cases where the user rating really doesn't accurately reflect the quality of the show. Honestly, if you liked the classic version, you'll like the reboot (or requel...ig). Granted, the new show puts less focus on weird plots and more so takes the spirit of those plots and applies it to relevant real world topics.
In other words, people are just trippin cause of the politics ig. It really isn't that bad and for me, it makes the show more interesting to watch than an episode about a psychotic duck, or whatever.
I also gotta say, I was worried I wasn't going to like the animation quality on the new series but ngl, while it does its own thing, it does it very well.
Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san (2021)
Endearing as a Whole, Initial Yikes Aside...
The majority of the show displays a fun, turbulent but also wholesome friendship between an unlikely pair, which is all well and good. The first 2 or 3 episodes of season 1, however, makes it difficult to like the titular character (especially when she and her cronies act like walking Title IX lawsuits).
The show quickly finds its more wholesome footing, though (which is only strengthened in season 2), and helps the "will they wont they" plot underneath the 2 main character's Irish-style friendship. It's like the difference between Season 1 of The Office (US) and the rest of the show, where Michael Scott is depicted as mostly a jerk before becoming more endearingly pathetic in Season 2 and onward.
Suffice it to say that while the show may alienate a lot of potential viewers in it's first few episodes, it does improve and limit the harassment to playful teasing.
The Umbrella Academy: Meet the Family (2022)
Decent Start, but Dodgy Effects
Having not seen the full show yet (im a weekly kinda guy), I can only speak from a first impressions standpoint, and as far as story and character goes, the episode does a good job of reminding us who the main cast is and set up more of what to expect (im guessing they're putting in a dash of The Boys in this one?).
The only 2 negatives I can give is the kinda out of place Footloose sequence which was fun but felt too jarring for the full episode, especially since it lasted way longer than it should've. Also, my god did Netflix slash the budget on this one. Like the green screen effects were horrendous, and just a season ago they opened with the academy going against commies, ended with a time traveler army, and had a guy with a fish tank head; all of which looked pretty good for a tv show of this calibre. Now it seems like they had the budget for some things, but not a cg environment. Oh, and I just thought of how weird it is that Luther and...shoot...rumor lady kinda forgot about their will-they-wont-they, unless that was resolved last season? Don't remember.
So, not the greatest of first impressions but doesn't kill the show for me or discourage me from watching on.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2022)
Decent...but not enough McKay
Since I watched Vice in this little theater in the middle of nowhere, I've been really enjoying the work and unique style of Adam McKay; from as late as The Big Short to as recent as Don't Look Up (yes, really). Having said that...after watching the show in full, I'm left with 2 main thoughts: Not enough of McKay's style, and at the same time, TV may not be the format for him. Don't get me wrong, the characters are very enduring and well acted on their own, but I was expecting a lot more of his unique editing stye and way of delivering exposition. All we got in this show was fourth wall breaking and retro cinematography. Fine on their own, but as I said, McKay can do more than that, which admittedly might be a complaint that stems from expectations more than just taking in the show in a vacuum.
Also, not a lot of basketball in a show about basketball. I mean, I don't mind movies like Moneyball where a lot of the drama comes from the business side sport, but while Moneyball was a movie with a strong screenplay, Winning Time is a show with a lot of time to fill, time that might've been better taken up by basketball games the show skips most of the time.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Slow and Lack of Self Confidence
Yeah, show starts out slow for the first 4 episodes and nothing much of consequence really happens. Not too bad though, and I would've stuck with it if they didn't hijack the show with essentially Mandolorian Season 3 for 2 full episodes; episodes that end up being required viewing cause it addresses a lot of Mandolorian Season 2's finale. Besides the lack of substance and show hijacking, the finale at least makes up for it with a fun cameo and good action that makes up for the poorly choreographed fights in the beginning.
Witness (1985)
Good thriller...until it turns into amish pocahontas
Tbh, I was walking in with the expectation of a full crime thriller, as I was shown a very good scene from the beginning where the kid reveals who the perp is. From there, however, the movie switches to a fish out of water story about a hardboiled detective learning to appreciate the amish and falling in love, at least before the crime thriller aspect comes back. For what the movie wanted to do I think it achieved it well enough, but because of the direction the movie took it ended up loosing me to instagram.
Aquaman (2018)
It's cute
The visuals are enough to pull you in but the story is pretty basic: "we gotta get the thing to beat the bad guy yayyy!" That didn't really bother me as much as the lack of chemistry between Mera and Arthur, as well as that plucky cutesy music that'd play sometimes, never mind the acting of the teenage aquaman, which honestly made me laugh during that scene, despite the fact it's supposed to be serious. Other than that, if you're looking for something decent to watch maybe go for this. If you choose to skip, don't worry, you really aren't missing much.
