Path of Destruction (2005)
Fun science-based disaster movie
Path of Destruction was entertaining and had a plot that made sense within itself, so there's not much more you can ask for in a television movie. The nanobots idea is far-fetched, but it is loosely based on stuff I've seen in Scientific American. And isn't that what a sci-fi movie is all about? Making up a story that's not real and then taking it seriously? If you don't like that then don't watch sci-fi. I'm a big Star Trek and Stargate fan, so I accept far-fetched stories quite easily. My measure is if the far-fetched premise is true to itself. In Path of Destruction, the premise was true to itself. Also, Danica is beautiful and gave it her all, Chris Pratt was very good, and Stephen Furst provided the levity.
A fun movie to get on DVD or check out on television. Not perfect due to the budget, but not bad at all either.
Crimson Force (2005)
Good For Trekkers & Stargate Fans
I've watched every episode of every Star Trek and Stargate series so I found Crimson Force entertaining. They were definitely trying for the same feeling as those shows. There was a mystery, some action, costumes, sets made of rocks like on Star Trek. The Captain was a nasty version of Kirk. The hero was more like Riker. The women were powerful and were good to look at.
The movie is far from perfect. The plot was good and very sci-fi but you need to pay attention to get it all, like in Star Trek. The low-budget aspect was apparent especially in the action parts. Some of the acting needed help. The effects were both good and bad-not as good as Trek but what do you expect for a low budget movie.
Worth renting if you like this type of thing.
16 Blocks (2006)
Smart thriller/action movie with strong script & great acting
16 Blocks is a smart action/thriller movie. The characters behave like "real people" would in such a situation. Even the villains behave believably. The action is well-staged. The suspense is high. It's not just a guy movies. Women will like it too.
SPOILER ALERT: The body-count is low, and this is one of the things that helps with the believability. In many cop/action movies, there are so many people who die, that after a while, as a viewer, you get desensitized to the whole plot. In this movie, everything is real.
The performances are strong. Bruce Willis plays the old, tired cop character he did so effectively in Sin City and some other movies. His character is so depressive that he's hard to watch at times. Mo Def plays an annoying small-time criminal, and is purposely annoying, though that character can get wearing too. David Morse is brilliant as the cool, level-headed bad cop.
