Rick and Morty: Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion (2021)
Directionless
This season felt like it was written in a vacuum. The characters feel off and their immune to real world consequences. The plots for this season are stunningly absurd and complex, but feel lifeless and devoid of charm. There's no continuity between episodes. Rick and Morty have been sidelined in their own show and they haven't shared a solid adventure together all season. The smartest man in the universe is now easily manipulated and passive.
The mafia bit had potentially and the anime voltron set up sounds like a good idea on paper. In execution, it fails completely. Jerry calls his own son a "little rat," Summer is basically a sociopath and Rick is possibly the stupidest character in the family. I understand that they were going with a Godfather theme. But the characters established traits are bending to contrived plots. It's happening every episode. They act different not because of character motivations but because the writers really want to hit the beats of Godfather. Why? My biggest problems with this season are displayed in this episode:
- Rick and Morty's are sidelined in their own show. They havent even had a adventure together all season.
- The plot moves waaaaaay to fast and doesn't allow things to develop. Instead the viewer just gets hit over the head with a crude nonsensical sc-fi randomness (kinda feels like family guy).
- The jokes are either crude or just wordplay that thinks it's real clever.
- Nothing is being developed. The stories literally have no beginning middle and end, they just sort of happen. Seriously, what happened to Dan Harmon's "Story circle?"
Sidenote: Some R&M fans are actually in denial, thinking this seasons suckiness is due to Morty actually being evil morty lol. Fanboys are really something else.
Rick and Morty: Rick & Morty's Thanksploitation Spectacular (2021)
Another "Meh" episode in a increasingly mediocre season
The show is really starting to feel disjointed. There's typically one or two lines of quippy dialogue exchanged then there's a scene change. I'm shocked that no one's noticed that we haven't gotten one solid Rick and Morty solo adventure this season. A majority of this season has been spent on earth.... In a show where the whole galaxy and other dimensions are creative focal point of the entertainment. The sperm episode is slowly looking like a common denominator than a outlier and the characters have no motivations. Their established personalities arent being built on either as their is no continuity between episodes and no over-arching tone for the season. This is probably one of the better episodes of the season as the turkey scenes are kinda funny..... Kinda.
The Twilight Zone: Not All Men (2019)
Go For Broke, "Get Woke."
In 1960, Rod Sterling released the beloved twilight episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street", which acted a a subtle critique on cold war paranoia. Well written, and culminating in a shocking twist ending, the episode was an immediate hit among fans. This week "Not all Men" tries, and fails to recapture that iconic episode. As with most episodes in this season, "Not all men" suffers from blunt writing, a boring plot and a poor twist. Its messages are not subtle, spoon feeding the audience it's labored allegories and ideologies. Many moments throughout the episode are unintentionally cheesy. Thanks mostly in part to the writing.
This seasons greatest vices have been its sub-par plots, bad twists and utterly terrible writing. All things Rod Sterling perfected in the original twilight zone. Giving audiences chills with its timely messages and eerie tones.
The Twilight Zone: Six Degrees of Freedom (2019)
Exceptionally Average
Last weeks episode was arguably the worst of the season, if not the entire series. This week is a generic sc-fi space opera. The acting is excellent and this episode boasts the best scene in the series with an unhinged crew member completely losing it. There's much to appreciate in this episode but nothing comes close to original series eerie plots and potent messages. Even with promising sequences, and interesting character development, the plot doesn't make good on its fascinating setting.
Large portions of the episode feel generic, and there's nothing truly exceptional about this episode outside of a few scenes. It feels like alot of time is wasted on unneeded philosophizing, and the ending is sort of let down. With truly terrible previous episodes, this feels like a step up. If you can call averageness a step up.
The Twilight Zone: The Wunderkind (2019)
Written by a child?
An utterly clumsy, overtly silly episode this week. The premise (while unbelievable) is arguably the least potent and poorly written this season. Wasting excellent talent (John Cho), this episode wastes no time being the stupidest i've seen in awhile. It's the twilight zone, but this episode lacks common sense. The script essentially holds the hand of the viewer through the least subtle plot in twilight zone history.
No tone, an aggravating antagonist and a terrible script makes this episode an awful viewing experience. However, excellent lighting, cinematograph and decent pacing give the wunderkind a few redeeming qualities.
Oh yeah, all kids are now doctors. If that sounds silly, thats the "oh snap" moment at the end. I hope the plot twist is that this was written by a child.
