Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Quentin Tarantino is the truth
Films needed saving this year and oh boy Tarantino saved the s*** out of it. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood may not be Tarantino's best work, but it damn sure comes close to taking that spot. The directing is phenomenal, Quentin Tarantino exquisitely shows once again why he is one of this generation's auteurs. The performances from everyone, especially Leo and Brad, are extraordinary and the writing is superb, as were given dialogue that only Tarantino could pull off. If any other director/writer tried the conversations he works in this film; then half the audience would probably have fallen asleep. This also may be Tarantino's funniest film yet, and because of that, it made for one of my favorite theatre experiences of the year. I don't think I've laughed that hard at a movie as I did with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. However, with all that said what may be the most impressive thing about this film is the cinematography and set pieces. Tarantino does a fantastic job transporting the audience into this world, and I never felt for a moment that this wasn't Hollywood during the '60s.
Nevertheless, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is not perfect, it's pretty damn close to it, but I do have an issue with the film, and that's pacing. Throughout the film, multiple scenes could be removed from the final cut and wouldn't affect the outcome of the movie at all. While other (necessary) parts of the film are way longer, then they have any right to be. Unnecessary scenes, info, and dialogue are my biggest gripe with Tarantino as a writer. You could, however, look on the other side and say that those "unnecessary" scenes are quite entertaining, and they usually are, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is no exception. Although it has those elongated dialogues and unnecessary scenes, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is still pretty entertaining at being gratuitous so it somewhat (not entirely) makes up for it.
In a year full of unoriginal and disappointing films, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood truly stands out from the pack. Tarantino's ninth film is not without its faults, but what film isn't? Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, elegantly displays why Quentin Tarantino is one of the greatest filmmakers ever and is easily the best film of 2019. An obvious recommend.
Us (2019)
Jordan Peele does not disappoint in his sophomore outing.
Anyone who knows me knows I don't like horror. Never been a fan of it and probably never will. But, somehow Jordan Peele found a way to make me enjoy this bonkers film about a family's serenity turning to chaos when a group of doppelgängers begins to terrorize them.
Lupita Nyong'o is outstanding. Whether it be herself or her evil counterpart, she steals every scene, and I see an Oscar nomination incoming. Winston Duke was also excellent; he was hilarious in comedic moments but also fantastic during the thriller/horror parts. Evan Alex and Shahadi Wright Joseph, who played the children, were also exceptional.
The first half of this film is incredible. The way they handled the horror aspect was unique, and I enjoyed it a lot. The comedic moments aren't overdone, and there is plenty of laugh out loud moments. The score is remarkable, nothing short of perfection. But, the film has its issues.
The second half of the film, specifically the third act is the weakest part. Instead of being unique, it starts to turn into a conventional horror film, and as I said earlier, I'm usually not a fan of horror. The ending is something I didn't see coming, but I didn't like it at all. The end leaves you with so many unanswered questions and adds more complex elements, and that ultimately brings the score down for me.
Although it's not as good as his first movie, Jordan Peele gives us a film that has fantastic performances, great comedy, a ridiculously good score and shows that the sophomore slump can be beaten.
8/10 - Great
Captain Marvel (2019)
Funny at times, but that's it for this cringy formulaic superhero movie.
Captain Marvel is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and tells the story of Carol Danvers, who becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.
Captain Marvel start's pretty damn confusing. You don't know anything about her or why she's apart of a group of warriors. I know it's supposed to pay off in the end (and it does, somewhat) but that would be my first criticism. I did enjoy the opening act more than other critics did perhaps, but it does start slow and confusing which will bring the score down for me.
When Carol and Fury meet later on and start doing their buddy-cop routine that's when the movie is at it's best. Samuel L. Jackson gave another top-notch performance and brought great humor to the film. Ben Mendelsohn was flipping awesome and stole every scene. Brie Larson, on the other hand, was not right. As I said earlier, she's okay while doing the buddy cop routine. She cracks some good jokes, and I liked the character's sarcasm. But, everything else was terrible. When it came down to dramatic moments, she was cringy, and I couldn't help but look away from second-hand embarrassment.
The third act is absolute trash - garbage, doodoo, whatever word you want to use. The final fight scenes did nothing for me, as they were boring and dull. Everything else was so formulaic, and it felt like the scriptwriters were playing it safe. I know I keep on coming back to the word cringy, but it's just right. Watching Carol is like watching an 8-year-old fight crime.
Score: 2.5/5 - Mediocre
Happy Death Day 2 U (2019)
A great blend of horror and comedy
I never got around to seeing Happy Death Day and hadn't seen any trailers for this one, so I had no idea what to expect. But wow this was a pleasant surprise. Each character in this film is excellent, they all have great on-screen chemistry, especially Jessica's Rothe and Israel Broussard's characters. They also all have great comedic moments, but some jokes fall flat.
All though it is a horror movie of sorts it has a surprising emotional undertone. This "emotional" part explores the relationship between our heroine and her mother which can get very emotional for some people. Hell, it made me cry to the point where my friends were roasting me once we left the theatre.
In terms of the horror part of the film, I didn't like it. That's not a knock on the film per se just the fact that I don't like horror. If you are a fan of horror, you'll enjoy this, but for me, the horror aspect didn't work.
7/10 - Worth your money
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Cool action...but the script ruined it.
I can't give one of my usual detailed reviews cause I was stoned for most of this film, but here's my mini review of sorts.
It starts very slow, but it will eventually hook you in. The cast is excellent, with some cool villains and the Hugo & Alita relationship is something I bought into.
But, the script is the weakest part of this film. I was baffled at the choices they made towards the end, and like I stated it starts slow and boring. The thing I hated the most about the film is the ending. The action is phenomenal though and truly saves this movie from being a complete misfire. Like seriously, Alita is a badass.
5/10 = Mediocre
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)
Better than the first
I was lucky enough to attend an advance screening of The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and I can say with certainty, that this movie is a must watch.
The first twenty minutes of the film is Mad Max: Fury Road but with legos and humor, and I LOVE Fury Road. Not only that but there were so many references to other WB films and franchises that made me laugh.
The humor is fantastic, and the fourth wall breaking had me crying of laughter at some points. Each character is excellent, but Will Arnett's Batman steals the show. Even if the trailers looked terrible or the movie doesn't seem interesting to you, still see it cause Batman makes the whole thing worth it.
The action sequences are very fresh, engaging and even has a little suspense to it. My problems with the movie are minor, but I didn't like the way they took the ending. It wasn't a "bad" ending but not the conclusion I wanted. My only other issue with the film is that It can be slow at times. You'll have some cool action sequences, and the movie slows down for another twenty minutes and kind of ruined the flow of it for me. But, with all that said, this is an excellent movie, and If I had to pick, I'd choose this over the original.
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
uhhh
What the hell did I just watch? Easily the weirdest movie I've seen in a long time.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)
A satisfying conclusion to a fantastic trilogy
Let me start by saying that this is my LEAST favorite How to Train Your Dragon movie. For me, the first one will always have a place in my heart and will still be my favorite for years to come. The second one is also amazing, and If I had to choose, I'd pick it over the third one. But, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is still a fantastic movie that takes you on an emotional roller-coaster and wraps up the trilogy in a brilliant way.
The animation in this movie is incredible, and when you get to see "The Hidden World" your mind will be blown. Each character in this film brings something to the table, whether it be jokes, romance or great life lessons you get it all in this film. Hiccup and Toothless' relationship gets built upon more, and there's no way to describe it except by saying its awesome.
Regarding negatives, the writing in this story is the weakest of the trilogy, and the final fight is rushed and very anti-climatic. But the ending somewhat makes up for it. Very few movies make me cry, but this ending made me cry like a little girl. It's bittersweet knowing this is the final chapter in the How to Train Your Dragon saga, but the conclusion gives us a satisfying ending that we can all enjoy.
Result: It's Great
The Kid Who Would Be King (2019)
A delightful surprise
If I had to start anywhere, it would be the action. The action sequences in this film aren't half bad. If anything there excellent and engaging. Specifically, there's a scene with a horse chase, and it's better than most pursuits we get in action movies nowadays.
There were cheesy jokes that will probably make you cringe, but, there were jokes that landed and the pop culture references are always a plus.
The final act is the best part of this film and has a fantastic final battle with a great message behind it. The film's message is something we can all get behind and relate too, especially in today's political climate.
Regarding negatives, the first two acts of The Kid Who Would Be King is decent at best and might take some people out of the film. As I mentioned earlier, the jokes are good at times but can be very cringy. But that's it. It's an excellent movie for the family and something everybody can enjoy. Maybe if I were younger, I would have given it a higher rating, but the cringy jokes and slow start brought it down for me.
The Kid Who Would Be King gets a 7/10
Polar (2019)
One of the worst assassin movies I've ever seen
Polar has an exciting concept, and Mads Mikkelsen as the lead interested me, so going into this I had some expectations. But oh boy this movie is BAD.
The team of young assassins was In a completely different movie. Their scenes were upbeat and not a complete snoozefest. But Mikkelsen's character was a snoozefest that you could never relate too on an emotional level.
Polar's action scenes weren't even entertaining. The only thing that's worth watching is the blatant fan-service that they throw in your face. This film isn't worth your time and if you want an excellent assassin film then do yourself a solid and re-watch John Wick.
Glass (2019)
Dissapointing
Glass starts pretty damn good and hooks you in very early on. The first act has some fantastic action sequences, and for fans of Unbreakable, you'll love the nostalgic feeling you get.
Sadly, it's all downhill from there. Elijah and David barely have any talking time with each other, which was weird when considering the history the two of them have together. Speaking of Elijah, he is severely underused during the first act and some of the second act.
The third act is one big dumpster fire. There were so many ways you could take the final thirty minutes, and it's like M. Night Shyamalan purposefully chose the worst one to piss off the audience. Oh, and the ending? One of the most unsatisfying and frustrating endings ever.
Regarding the acting, James McAvoy gives a stupidly good performance. Seriously, it's some of the best I've seen, and without his return, this movie would be a complete piece of garbage. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson are solid in their respective roles for the content that was given to them.
I'm a massive fan of Unbreakable and enjoyed Split, so as a fan of the two films, I hate the fact that this is one of the most disappointing movies I've seen. It's not horrible, but it it's not what fans deserved.
Glass gets a 5/10
Bumblebee (2018)
The Transformers movie we deserved
The film is filled with fantastic acting talent from top to bottom, except John Cena. John is spectacular in comedic moments, but when it came to dramatic scenes he blew it. Hailee Steinfeld as the lead is wonderful. She undoubtedly is better than Shia LaBeouf and makes Mark Wahlberg look like a D-list actor.
Travis Knight is no Michael Bay, and you can tell that early on in the film. Travis makes Bumblebee an actual character with a story that is worth buying a ticket for. Knight also makes the movie the shortest in the Transformers franchise, which is a good thing. The shorter runtime helped the film not feel dragged on with unnecessary scenes. To wrap it all up, the fight scenes are fantastic and make Bumblebee look like a total badass. I think you'll walk out of this film with a newfound appreciation for the character and wanting more from the franchise.
Bumblebee gets a 9/10.
Aquaman (2018)
It's decent
Aquaman is directed by James Wan and is the 6th movie in the controversial DCEU.
Let's start with the positives. The acting all around is excellent. Jason Momoa is an excellent Aquaman, and the action scenes are some of the best I've seen from a comic book movie in a long time. Another good thing going for this movie is that it's very self-contained. It's no Batman v. Superman or Suicide Squad. It doesn't try to set up 2-3 spinoff movies, which DC movies are sometimes known for. The villains weren't half bad. You could understand them, and they weren't evil for the sake of being evil. Finally, James Wan creates a fantastic world, which for me was
breathtaking at times.
But that doesn't mean there aren't negatives. The movie is clocking around 2 hours and 23 minutes, and you can feel it. There were so many scenes that were unnecessary, and so many of the jokes just fell flat and didn't land with me or the audience that I was with. Besides the action scenes, everything was lackluster. The Arthur and Mera relationship was cringy at times, but that's not something that's going to ruin the movie for you. Aquaman is also very predictable; which takes the fun and suspense out during certain moments of the film.
A film with great acting, excellent fights, and a fantastic setting are ultimately brought down by its dragged on runtime, bad jokes, and uneventful/unnecessary scenes.
Aquaman gets a 6/10.
Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
A perfect example of a sequel not living up to the first
The second part in Ralph's adventure was, disappointing, to say the least.
I was so looking forward to this movie because I absolutely loved the first one. But, when I say this movie let me down, it REALLY let me down.
It's a very boring movie from start to end. The relationship between Ralph and Vanellope is cringy at best. Jokes are terrible, except for one involving the princesses.
After a while, I wanted to take a nap
5/10
