The Wedding Ringer (2015)
Good potential and some heart, but goes off the rails
This movie really had a lot of potential. Kevin Hart is at the top of his game and seems laser focused in every scene. He really did a terrific job carrying this movie. Josh Gad did also did a very good job, and the premise was actually quite interesting.
About halfway through, it seems the writers got bored and sat in a room asking each other "what is the most absurd, distasteful, stupid, cringy thing you can come up with?" Then they took two or three of those ideas and ran with them. Ran off a cliff.
What is otherwise a fairly charming and funny movie about loneliness, bromances and love (or fake love), the movie becomes ruined with a few too many zany scenes of complete insanity.
It seems cringe is all the rage these days. It's a trend in many movies. And I'm not really a fan of it, unless it's executed extremely well.
This movie is ruined by the overwhelming desire to become more and more edgy and chaotic, to its detriment. There are moments that really shine, but they are overwhelmed by cliched fat-guy-gets-hit-in-the-balls scenes over and over and over again.
I wanted to like it, but I found myself shaking my head while burying it in my hands too many times. It's too bad. The Hart/Gad chemistry is there (and it's quite good), and with a little more heart and a little less cringe, this could have had a bit of a Will Smith and Kevin James "Hitch" thing going on. Alas, it falls far short of what it could've been.
Ted Lasso (2020)
What a gem. Every character is likable, well written and perfectly acted
This is a show that just oozes nice. Ted Lasso is a the epitome of "kill em with kindness". No matter how much you try to tear him down, he just smiles back at you and says "I'm gonna make you like me in the end, and even if you don't, that's fine by me."
Even the meanness and plotting in this show ends up failing and being overtaken by good old fashioned niceness. Ted will wear you down and get into your heart.
Absolutely fantastic show with wonderful acting all around. I truly loved every single character, phenomenal casting and storytelling all around.
This show is something special. I will be rewatching it many times. Cannot wait for season 2!
A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish (2019)
Cute story, good acting, awful autotune
Guys, whoever has their finger on the Autotune button needs to be FIRED. I blame The Math Club, who apparently produced every song. The insult added to injury is that the few times the characters sing a few lines without autotune, they sound good! Whoever produced these songs ripped out all of the authenticity of it. I was begging for the final Christmas Queen song to have no autotune and just let the poor girl sing. But they dialed it up even higher!
It totally ruined and otherwise pretty good movie. I want to add it to my yearly Christmas movie rotation, but I can't subject my ears to that travesty again. I even thought the songs were pretty good, but god the autotune!
It's also a shame because Gregg Sulkin, Isabella Gomez, and Laura Marano were all great actors. I really liked Mr. Wintergarden as well. Why can't these music producers just chill with the autotune? It DOESN'T make it sound better. It makes it sound god awful. Really wanted to give this movie the 5-6 star review it deserves. It maybe could've even been a 7 if we would have gotten the authentic vibe of this girl's true singing voice. But trying to sell her as a talented, up-and-coming singer while absolutely burying her in autotune. It's clear that the producers don't know anything about mixing or producing when all they can do is reach for autotune. What a disappointment. Good job to the actors though. Sorry you had to be involved in such terrible music.
The Knight Before Christmas (2019)
Can't believe the negativity. This is a great movie.
Josh Whitehouse is fantastic. Extremely likable and very funny. I love that this is a time travel movie where the driving force isn't how confused and freaked out the traveler is, over and over again. Cole is clearly a renaissance man, looking for his mission as a knight. He keenly observes everything, and learns quickly from his observations. It's clear that he doesn't spend too much time questioning what he doesn't know or understand, and is open to the fact that just because something can't be logically explained, doesn't mean it isn't possible. Instead, he focuses on the moment, and what matters. Being kind, compassionate, and level headed. I also like that Brooke is accepting and accommodating. I think Vanessa did a great job.
Is this movie perfect? No. But it's cute, funny, enjoyable, and very sweet. It's not a 10, but I've already watched it twice with my wife and enjoyed it both times. For that, it's a 10 to me. Not to mention all of the ridiculous grinches who give this great, feel good flick such a low rating. It certainly deserves better.
Bring on the sequel! I'd love to see Cole take Brooke back to his time and show her around. And his brother is a very sweet and interesting character as well.
Long Shot (2019)
Vulgar, raunchy, hilarious, and real
This movie was a laugh riot from start to finish. Seth Rogan is his usual self with brilliant comedic timing, perfect delivery and absurd charm. Charlize Theron was fantastic as the overworked, incredibly talented and ambitions presidential hopeful. Both characters were portrayed perfectly. But the magic is when they get together on the screen. The chemistry is electric, and every interaction is brilliant and true to life.
This isn't a highbrow political romcom. It's off the walls, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and every little nod and quip from the supporting cast is executed perfectly.
Enjoy it for what it is. Absolutely one of the best romantic comedies and comedies in general I've seen in a long time. All of the actors were excellent, and the writing was sharp and hilarious. Expect some Seth Rogan shenanigans and some wonderful chemistry between these two leads. Theron seemed to really be in her element in this. She is genuine and believable, and Seth really works well next to her to open her up and bring out her fun side.
If you can't enjoy this film, you're taking life way too seriously.
Pixels (2015)
What is wrong with the reviewers of this movie?
I've been a long time IMDb reader but the reviews of this movie are so bad that I finally made an account just to leave this review.
Adam Sandler was perfect in this. I can't imagine anyone else playing it better. He's funny, charming, genuine, and has great chemistry with everyone in the film. The supporting cast did a great job. The one thing that doesn't add up is how the dweeb character of Kevin James became POTUS in the first place. But I overlooked that and enjoyed the movie for what it was. Entertaining, fun, a great story with great pacing and special effects. Sci fi fun, great action, and very well done all around.
People need to chill out and get over themselves. These low reviews are not justified, make no sense, and are just Debbie downers who don't know a fun feel good film when they see it.
There were so many little details in this that were spot on, and everyone's role, big or small, was executed very well. A great soundtrack and fun throwbacks to so many classic video games makes this a total win. Sandler, Columbus and crew should be very proud.
I'm hoping and praying for a Pixels 2 soon! That would be so amazing. This was a fantastic movie. Ignore the armchair critics and see this with an open mind. You're gonna have a good time.
