The Fourth War (1990)
The worst movie I have ever paid to see
I was suckered into paying to see this movie in the theater because of the title and because I like the actors.
For 19 years now, this movie has been my standard by which to judge all terrible films.
There was no excuse for the distribution of this film.
Plodding, meandering, insulting to the intelligence of the viewer, and not a sufficient allegory for the cold war to have made it worth seeing.
The only reason to watch this movie is to see how truly awful a movie can be.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
Metaphor or guide for life?
The TV show, like the movie that preceded it, was more like a metaphor about contemporary values than it was a guide for surviving adolescence. Setting aside the obvious fantasy/occult elements and perhaps most of the issues around mortality (which they never did deal with in much depth, sadly), the show dealt mainly with issues of relationships and related themes such as love, honesty, forgiveness, loyalty, and sexual orientation.
The featured reviewer (who is responsible for choosing those on IMDb?) seems to be admonishing the creators for showing the more "mature themes" to teenagers. This is obviously someone who does not remember being a teenager nor knows any teens today. Rather than being concerned about the viewing of sex and violence, the concerned TV executives should be concerned about promoting narrow stereotypes and promoting blind obedience to authority. Joss Whedon was a visionary who realized that our culture is falling apart. He made viewers think about those things that make life meaningful. The monsters and demons were symbols of the ills of society. How the hero deals with those social ills is an allegorical message for us all to contemplate.
I think teens who watched BTVS have been given a preview of major life decisions to come.
