Alpha and Omega (2010)
Not so great
It was a rushed movie. It was hardly an hour long, but the whole time it had this kind of manicky tone - all the characters and line delivery as well, like the producers were afraid kids would go to sleep or are too dumb to think. But Manic is alright sometimes, i reckon. However, in Alpha and Omega it does not work...it starts out a mess with fast animations and quick cuts, giving a disorienting feeling, and once you feel you recognize a character from the trailer, they are wisked off camera. The movie doesn't lay the ground story very well - the whole 'Alphas howl with Alphas and Omegas howl with Omegas' doesn't come off as crisp as it should have. It could of taken a Romeo & Juliet approach, but did not. That doesn't kill the movie, but the fact that the two leads (who fall in love inevitably) are an Alpha and an Omega is hardly given the time to establish. A&O is filled with clichés but right when you recognize them, another cliché is popping up. The movie goes too fast from which it came (but it came from nothing because it was all manicky at the beginning). The characters are typical, the busy uninterested girl, the silly fun loving boy who likes her, the stupid guy pals and the uninteresting dud that the girls father/society WANTS her to be with.
As far as comedy goes, the movies not very funny. The script is not very solid, and but does offer many moments when hilarious one liners could have take place, but instead there's these hush awkward trying to be funny moments that just made the theater feel more empty. And rather than building the characters up so they could become more than their archetype selves, they just put them in predictable situations like running from bears or marrying the wrong guy (imagine a kids movie that doesn't end with the male and female lead shagging up). The characters feel more like devices in the need to tell a story that has been told a million times. Forbidden love? Opposites attract? Yeah we know.
Even though i found myself dozing off, there was one or two moments i truly felt were good one even semi-great. The first time the two wolves howled together on the train i felt was reaching and getting a response (from me at least) and for a brief second i felt myself involved, but hey that lasted for about 20 seconds.
Maybe i am expecting too much, but i think this movie is only for kids who don't listen to characters talk and just watch the pretty colors on the screen because other than some nice aesthetics and a howling moment, this movie is the worst animated movie i have ever seen.
The Last Picture Show (1971)
I was blown away
Truly a touch of great modern cinema. Pure, though not pure, and touching though honest, and raw. All i can say is that this should of been awarded Best Picture, even over A Clockwork Orange.
Cybill Shepherd was shaky at first, and i didn't see where her character was coming from until the party when she agrees to go to the naked swimming party. Wow, she ended up both devious, yet intelligent. Not a villain, though definitely antagonistic. Pops to Shepherd. I loved Sonny, i think he was the best male character. Timothy Bottoms's performance was great, even though he wasn't nominated for an Oscar. I found his character always redeeming himself, truly a panorama of human emotion-much like the movie itself. Duane was also like-able, but much more small town than Sonny.
Cloris Leachman's performance was beautiful, just tragic, and credible. Ruth was another character you'd feel attached to, if you passed them on the street.
Through the tragedy and big laughs this movie was a great blend of sexuality, small town blues, and interesting, poignant characters you really feel you know.
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Sadness, met only with the heart
I just watched this movie for the 5th time, and I'm still feeling the quick stab of guilt. Why must such a beautiful movie end with the saddest ending? God, if I only knew that Ennis and Jack would not end up in the end, when I saw this for the first, that would of saved many tears. This movie is a work of art, and next to maybe Memoirs of a geisha, its the most beautiful movie of last year. No movie will touch your emotions or make you feel like two people were cheated more than Brokeback. Jack loves Ennis deeply, Ennis is afraid to admit his love for Jack till its too late... Jack's piercing forget-me-not eyes, see right through Ennis' rugged image, to find a soft and lonely person, that was depraved of love from his own father. Ennis' eyes show darkness. His eyes are deep, and yet sad. Depression is one of the strongest feelings, everyone has been sad before. This means everyone can relate to this movie, love with stands all other perilous whims in life, except prejudice. Ennis is the most homophobic man to ever be in love with another man. The word "GAY" isn't necessary, because Ennis is not Gay, he is confused, and to put him in a clique, is wrong. Ennis never had a smile, till him and Jack bonded. Ennis needed to be held, forever, the animosity of our earth is just too strong for these two doves, the world can't accept them, and that just eats me.
Monster's Ball (2001)
A very sad and real movie that really, truly , got to me.
I have to say, after seeing this movie for the 3rd time, I still cried. This movie is just one of the most depressing movies ever made(in my opinion.) Love it or hate it, I think this movie is real. First you have the incredibly talented Heath Ledger(Sonny) who seems real lonely, and somewhat broken inside. His father (Billy Bob Thortan) is a very strict and racist police guard at a jail. I think he forced Heath into going into the profession too, since Heath's character is truly not one for macabre situation. Billy Bob is always scolding Sonny, and Sonny just responds back like a wounded dog. Little phrases like "sorry, I'll do better next time." Heath's character, I fell sorry for the most. He has a a** hole father, that even, in a situation of such seriousness couldn't say That he loved Heath. P diddy does surprisingly well as Halle Berry's husband, who is locked up in the jail that Sonny and Billy Bob work. On the day of his execution, Sonny and his father are leading him to the chair, when Heath just can't take it, he falls to the side a vomits, its truly a understandable part. But not for Billy Bob, who, of course really attacked Heath after the execution was done with. Saying things like "You ruined his last walk!" All the time he is hitting sonny upside the head. The next morning Heath is sleeping, and he is awakened by his father and told to "ship out and Get out!" Heath pulls a gun on him, and in a heat of either pain or sadness, he asks the big question. "Do you Hate me?" he asks his father. Billy Bob says yes, and that he always did, and with all the love festering in his heart Sonny says "well I always loved you." Heath then pulls the trigger on himself, ending a sorrow filled life. Truly a sad movie, a great ensemble with a very outstanding performance by Halle, I didn't know she was capable of doing so well. A movie with a great score that ripes your heart out, a movie that will have you cry and think about being alone.
