Varshangalkku Shesham (2024)
The One in Which They Make a Movie
Varshangalkku Shesham is all about experiencing a movie. It's about the aspirations, hardwork, excitement and satisfaction of being in a creative process and pulling it off. Vineeth Sreenivasan and Friends have once again hit it out of the park with this movie.
The movie talks about friendship and how perseverance and trust in friendship can take you places. It is about creators, their ego, their self doubt and their achievements. We root for the friends and their relationship.
This is a story we have seen and we are aware of what is going to happen but we are in for the ride.
Vineeth Sreenivasan has a vision and he has fulfilled it.
Anjaam Pathiraa (2020)
A REALISTIC THRILLER.
A BOLD STEP FOR MALAYALAM CINEMA.
So to talk about a thriller movie means avoiding the mines of spoilers, and I have decided to do it.
SWITCHING OFF AND ON OF LIGHTS TOO CAN SCARE YOU
Lets talk about casting first. All the characters are perfectly cast. Especially that of Unnimaya. i have seen reviewers of the opinion that there was no need for a feministic character. i beg to differ because there are many lady police officers who are in powerful positions and to depict one of them through a character was a homage to them. we have been seeing female officers in movies who are being ridiculed for their decision making skills but here its different. (remeber the infamous "you are just a woman" jibe).
The character played by Indrans was awesome.
Jaffer Idukki's character keeps up his present acting graph. The only actors who are capable of doing such a character in present malayalam cinema are him and Suraj Venjaramoodu. not revealing much about the character. DO LOOK OUT FOR THE CHARACTER.
Then comes Chackochan in his criminal psychologist avatar. the character has been played by him in a realistic manner. He is no Sherlock, just a criminal psychologist looking for some crime scene experience.
The kiler character had very less screen time and he is shrouded in his mystery. but the few dialogues he utters contains many layers of psychology.
The character of sreenath Bhasi was really a necessity in such a gritty thriller. He has played it with such elan. if his character was not included in the movie it may have made the story dry after sometime.
Now about the movie. The movie can be compared more to a thriller novel with substance rather than any hollywood thriller movies. There are homages to Saw Franchise but it has nothing to do with the storyline. It do fill all the thriller trope boxes but at the last moment moves out of it too. The Director/Writer know the correct mix of humour and thriller. The humour in a unexpected character which felt very unwanted at first was revealed to be a clever technique later but the reveal is subtle.
Ambili (2019)
Whoever has a more loving heart they are mad and YOU are MADDER my boy.
Ambili is a film which bathes you in the moonlight as you passes through the movie with a smile on your face and tears in your eyes. The title character of the movie is a man who still posses the child like innocence which people around him often take for granted. A good decent road movie with a heart doesn't boast anything extra ordinary except for human relationships.
Ambili is a person who is always excited and will do anything for the people who speaks softly with as he takes it to be symbol of their true self or in other words he thinks everyone is like him.
Ambili doesn't make you sympathize with the main character instead makes you empathize with hiim.
The visuals of the village was extraordinary and has captured the place in its entire beauty.
Ratsasan (2018)
Typical investigation thriller. But the execution!!!!!!!!
So to begin with the script typical cliched cat and mouse chase. But when it comes to the screen it just explodes and leave thriller buffs awestruck. The plot points are the ones to watch out for, people who have been reading movie scripts for a long time/ reading Wikipedia plots of movie will be very astonished at the way the plot points are being placed. It's a thriller movie with some horror elements. What's acres is not the appearance of the killer instead it's the BGM and his modus operandi. The actors have done their jobs perfectly. Especially the protagonist 's brother in law and the titular killer.
