Profondo rosso (1975)
Great cinematography, poor writing
The cinematography in this movie is pretty good; there's some really nice shots and lighting choices I really appreciated. The writing, however, is a bit laughable, and the characters motivations don't always make since. There's even some "brain fart" moments where characters will forget or disregard important facts for the sake of the plot to move along. Overall, it's not something I want to watch again soon unless I'm watching it exclusively for the cinematography.
Gnome Alone (2017)
HUH????
The plot is confusing at best and horribly unstructured. Bad soundtrack, awful characters, little to no character development. Also, why gnomes? I have nothing else to say.
Meet the Feebles (1989)
Sure, I gave it a 4/10 (now 5/10) . But I still like it.
Its weird, its strange, its a little gross. Whats not to like? Well, the story is a bit scattered, leaving me wondering for the majority of the movie what the hell the point was. The plot picks up eventually, but the constant switching back and forth from various subplots left a vague taste in my mouth. Not that the movie is not clear with its subplots; its just very scattered.
The ending is violent and a bit shocking, but "The Garden of Love" song really ties it up for me. Honestly, every time that song was played I was hooked. Overall, the weirdness of this movie and the dim, low-budget esc lighting throughout makes me want to re-visit Meet the Feebles. Just probably not anytime soon.
Fritz the Cat (1972)
Definitely a guilty pleasure film and always a fun watch
I love this movie. What can I say? Well, I can't say it's exempt from criticism; the film has its flaws, both technically and chronologicaly, but it's enjoyable, at least, for me. Plus, the score is pretty good. "You're the only girl (I've ever really loved)" is a beautiful song; it really sets the mood for a movie about the city, the grimy life of Fritz as a college student, experimentation with sex and drugs, ect, and all while keeping with an early 40s type jazz sound. The other tracks are great too, especially the opening track, although the lyrics are a bit cheesy (but it's still fun and brings back some Janis Joplin esc vibes with it). The overall plot of the movie is blurry and is more of a mash up of different scenes and arcs from the original comics by Robert Crumb, but if you're looking for something sarcastic and offensive with a psychedelic twist, this one is for you. That being said, the film is not perfect and, in some ways, dated by it's politics and social commentary, so it must be viewed through the lenses of the time period in which it was made, as well as with context from the original comics.
On a side note, I've heard people theorize that this movie influenced furries and furry culture. Hm.
Oculus (2013)
Suprisingly Good
I was suprised at how trippy the film got during the second and third act. I will say the first 30 minutes didnt impress me too much, and I considered turning it off, but once inside their childhood home, things got rolling for our two main characters and I was interested. For the movie as a whole, Id give it a 7/10. Its not perfect, and I may or may not watch it again, but I enjoyed it, and the more I think about it, the more I appreciate it. The ending is grim and the parallels made to the past throughout the film are a nice touch. The way the two stories within the movie (the present and the past) intertwine and interfere with one another is confusing to both the audience and the main characters, which adds to the atmosphere immensely. Its almost as if the characters are high; they lose track of where they are, whats happening, have hallucinations, and time slows down. Its a brilliant touch and I would recommend checking this one out.
The Boy (2016)
Spoilers Ahead
Before I get too into the movie itself, I will say that I liked the opening credits, as they had a sort-of throwback affect to them since they were longer than credits usually are today. Is it really worth being gratful over? I dont know, maybe Im just desperate.
Although this film has its problems, the second act did well in showing how the main character was manipulated into caring for the doll, and made for an interesting concept. However, the pay off is cut short once the audience is subjected to the neck-bearded man bursting out of the wall and his high-pitched cries of "mommy". On paper, the suprise ending may have done better, but after all the buildup the ending is rather disappointing. I cant bash the writers for trying something new with the haunted doll trope, but it definitly takes away from the atmosphere of the film. The ex-boyfriend subplot is only forgivable because of his controlling nature; the main character starts losing controll of her life and mental state after succumbing to the doll, and once her creepy ex shows up, she is almost unable to resist his demands for her to come back to the U.S. with him. But the moment he breaks the doll, the plot falls through and the tension is broken. Overall, the idea of a deranged child killer living in his parents basement, whille creepy in real life, doesnt work that well in The Boy. Maybe if the story had taken on a more Hardy Boys/Agatha Christie esc tone, or even as a Vincent Price esc melodrama thats not afriad to be a little campy, it may have done better, but of course its too late now.
Love on a Leash (2011)
Absolute Madness
This film is a quirky, fun-for-the-whole-family Masterpiece. Cant belive it hasnt gotten more attention...I enjoyed it way more than I did the dull-fest "The Revenent"...too much gore, too much for impressionable children. Thank you, whoever made this God-honoring movie...xx
