The Good House (2021)
Worth a watch if you like Weaver and Kleine
I wanted to like this movie more than I actually did. I found the characters were just kind of unlikeable generally. All very self absorbed. Especially the two daughter characters. The younger of whom looks down on the male love interest by calling him that "garbage man". There seemed zero actual support for Hildy's alcohol problem from her family, the daughters just seemed to see her as an ATM.
I think maybe the dogs were the most likeable characters, though the Kevin kleine character came a close second. It didn't actually seem like the main charcter Hilday really even liked the town very much, or anyone in it. She showed very little emotional range and just seemed kind of numb to everything, maybe that is what being an alcoholic does to you.
The movie is worth a watch if you are a fan of Sigorney Weaver. I hope she gets some better roles in future though.
Ticket to Paradise (2022)
Nostalgia Watch
I love the actors, loved the location and loved an older romance getting a look in for a change. However, the plot was lazy and it kind of felt like an opportunity was missed, it was only okay when it could have been great. It felt like the actors just sleepwalked through the movie and the script wasted their talents.
Also, what stopped me from enjoying the movie more was the dumbness of the supposedly very intelligent daughter. I mean, what is the rush to marry someone you have known for only 30 days? Maybe she had been binge-watching 30 day fiancé. I get that he's a hunk and it's a paradise island but after a couple of years of picking seaweed even that will get old.
There was great chemistry between George and Julia and it kind of felt like we were cheated out of a proper smooch between them! It is worthwhile for the nostalgia factor but not a classic and probably not even a re-watch.
Nope (2022)
Slow-Burning Sci-Fi
It is a slow-burner where not a whole lot happens until quite far into the movie. In saying that I enjoyed the brother-sister dynamic and loved how the actors played off each other. Also, there was some great cinematography.
The movie gets side-tracked with a subplot regarding Steven Yeun's character that seems to have no impact on the overall direction of the movie.
The movie tries to take on a well worn subject matter from a new angle and that is tough to do. If you want a traditional sci-fi flick re-watch some Stephen King.
It's good. I enjoyed it enough to not feel like I had wasted my time or my money. But will I remember it in a few years?
I guess we know the answer to that one...
Nope!
Beast (2022)
Idris Elba versus Nature!
It was funny as hell! I didn't really have a big problem with this movie
except that it is not a horror movie!
It is more of a tragi-comedy. The decisions taken by the lead are head-scratchingly bad.
He is mourning the loss of his wife and his daughters hate him. Honestly, I can see why. He seems incapable of making alright decisions. At one point he hands a loaded gun over to one of the children.
In saying that, the shots of Africa were epic on the big screen. Also, Idris Elba wrestles a lion. Need I say more? Maybe wait until it comes to streaming though.
This is one of the rare movies where you will be rooting for the "monster".
Love in the Villa (2022)
Not the worst I've ever seen
It's not the worst low-budget romcom ever made. I mean it is pretty bad but at least it is set in a pretty location and there is a very funny scene with the cats. Actually there are a few unintentionally funny scenes in the movies.
As the other reviewers have said the female lead is completely ridiculous. I would have dumped her a long time ago and it is hard to imagine her boyfriend sticking four years with her without spotting all the red flags along the way.
I mean she must have spent years obsessing over that trip to Verona booking all the daytrips and planning every meal! This lady has a screw loose for sure. She agreed to share the villa with a strange man instead of just looking
for a refund and alternative accommodation elsewhere.
Also, how did she suddenly have a very expensive looking wardrobe at her disposal when her luggage had been donated to an orphanage?
There are loads of baffling moments and in the end, it seemed like the two characters rather deserved each other and their respective ex's had lucky escapes.
Honestly a bunch of high school kids could sit down and come up with a better plot for a romcom than this! I mean seriously it is not surprising that Netflix is on the rocks. Maybe before greenlighting these type of films they could
have a focus group. Anyone who has ever watched a romcom would know this would be a dud idea.
There are better things to watch on netflix and I wish I could take back the last two hours.
