Mad Men: For Those Who Think Young (2008)
Season Two Premiere Episode
The show picks up two years after the end of Season One and things seem to be going the same, but with a little different. New technology enters the picture as well as the stalling marriage of Don and Betty.
Don Draper is still the man on top of the ad agency but there are still men trying to take him out. Plus, the whole baby storyline from last season between Peggy and Pete has yet to be discussed.
The first episode of season two is a slow-burner, answering hardly any of the burning questions from Season One. However, I am sure the writers know how to hook the viewer in before the knockout punch.
Great episode to start the second season.
Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)
Lemmon and Pacino make this movie a classic
At first, I was hesitant to buy this movie, but I always heard good things about it, so I bought it. At first, it's confusing for some minutes until you figure out the real estate lingo, but once you get past the ordinary phrases used by the businessmen, you love it. Basically the movie takes place in a real estate company on its last leg. During the night, someone breaks into the building to steal the Glengarry Leads. The good leads.
Lemmon as Shelly gives an emotional and stirring performance. His facial expressions and his movements add to the whole effect of his character and it showed he could still act in major motion pictures.
Arkin as George may have the hardest character to play as he plays a shaky and often on-his-toes salesmen, a good performance.
Harris as Moss gets to do most of the screaming in the movie and that's always easy for Harris, he always does a good job.
Baldwin as Blake has a short scene but makes an impact and it lasts. You just listen and stay attentive when Baldwin is speaking. It's that good.
Spacey as Williamson has to play an embarrassed and often ridiculed office manager but Spacey's performances are always electric.
Finally, the Oscar nominated performance of Al Pacino as Ricky Roma is quite possibly my favorite movie character ever. Pacino's usual swagger is there but this time it's there with an attitude. His screen impact is matched by no one in this movie and you'll love this character. With the exception of possibly Serpico, this is Pacino's best performance of his career and should've won the Oscar and probably would've if he didn't win for Best Actor that year.
If you don't mind STRONG language and you love pure acting and dialouge and possibly the greatest cast ever assembled, you'll love this movie. If you like explosions every 10 minutes, leave this one on the shelf at the store. I give my recommendation to anyone who likes Lemmon, Pacino or just fantastic acting in general. This movie should be considered one of the greatest ever but it always gets passed up. Watch it and you'll see why you shouldn't have ever passed it up.
10/10
The Deer Hunter (1978)
The Deer Hunter Is Quite Possibly One Of The Greatest Movies Ever
The Deer Hunter takes place in Clairton, PA and follows three hometown heroes as they enter the war in Vietnam. At first, each one of them can't believe that they're actually going and are excited. But when they reach the war, each one of them gets a whole new outlook on life.
Walken as Nick does an outstanding job. Nick's character changes greatly from start to finish and the last scene is the most intense in the movie.
Cazale as 'Stosh' does a commendable job and it's amazing when you find out that he was sick in real life and died a few months after shooting. Cazale was a real pro in this movie.
Savage as Steve has a very emotional part and one part that might be one of your favorites.
Streep as Linda is the love interest of two men in the story and she does a pretty good job with her character, but nothing outstanding.
Robert De Niro as Michael just stole the show. De Niro's intensity, his moxie and his desire to make the part of Michael good, shows. This is the best performance of his career beating Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, GoodFellas and The Godfather Part II. You just want to see Michael on the screen at all times, whether it be hunting or fighting for his life in Vietnam. It's a horrible shame that De Niro didn't win an Oscar for this character because he deserved it more than anyone.
The Deer Hunter takes great acting, great emotion, great intensity and great sadness and puts it all into one simply amazing movie and a movie that you'll be talking about later. The Deer Hunter is like a good book you never want to put down.
10/10. Period.
