Family Guy: Peter's Two Dads (2007)
Funny Stuff!
I heard a lot about this episode before I got the chance to see it. Apparently Irish societies in America were outraged by this episode and wanted it banned, while Irish people just thought it was funny! (Over the years we have just excepted the typical stereotypes that surround us, e.g. Drunken people, small villages etc.). The episode begins with a party being planned for Meg's 17th Birthday, Peter being Peter, gets drunk, falls down the stairs and lands on his father. His father dies, and Peter obviously feeling guilty goes to see a hypnotist, who sends Peter back into the depths of his mind where he recalls an incident where his late father reveals that he is not his real Father. Peter visits his mother, where she admits that 40 years ago she visited Ireland and had a fling with a local rogue named Mickey McFinnigan. Peter starts his quest to visit Ireland to meet his father. And that he does! My only problem with this episode, its not even a problem, a small error, is that when Brian and Peter arrive at their destination, they arrive in a traditional black London Cab?! Whats with hat??...All in all, typically Family Guy...Very funny!
The Simpsons Movie (2007)
Finally, something the old-school fans will appreciate!
I have been an absolute die hard Simpsons fan since the very first season. It became an every week thing, getting excited about new episodes, and most famously "the couch bits". But within the past 5 years or so, the Simpsons took a bit of a nose dive, so much so I found myself avoiding new episodes at all costs. It made me cringe. When I heard the announcement that a movie was to be made, my first reaction was, great! Then followed by, "Oh no, this could be awful". I avoided all articles, adverts, everything that had anything to do with the movie! I wanted to go in with a clear and open mind. I WAS NOT disappointed. The Simpsons took a u-turn and went back to what they are known and well loved for. The jokes come with ease, unlike the newer episodes, in which the try so hard to be funny. The characters stay true to their form, and is well worthy of being up there with some of the great animated features of all time. Sure it isn't the best Simpsons ever written, but it is just so fantastic to see them back where the belong!
Volver (2006)
Fantstic
Volver was definitely worth the wait. When I heard that Almovodar was making this film, I was dying to see it. Unfortunately waiting for it to come out in my local cinema was frustrating. Then last Friday it arrived in the luxury screen. It was totally worth the wait! Penelope Cruz just lit up the screen, in her best performance to date. Absolutely fantastic, Almovodar always amazes me, with all his work! All About Me Mother is still on the top of my list with his films, but Volver isn't that far behind! I think Penelope Cruz shines so much more in her Spanish films as apposed to her English films, she can express herself a lot more, and definitely with this puts her in contention for an Oscar next year. Lets hope their is more to come!
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
Good but not great...
Like many people, after reading the book, I couldn't wait to see this film on the big screen. I think in general, for people who hadn't read the book, people will find this film quite good. For those who have read the book, they will realise that they have changed/left out a lot of the film. The authenticity of the film, I thought was quite good. I really liked the way they had the central French characters spoke to each other in French....Small little observation I know, but I like these little things. As for the acting, I think we can all agree that we have seen both Hanks and Tataou in better roles. In the beginning of the film Hanks seemed stiff, he loosened up a little but both lacked the chemistry needed for the role!...Tataou, as well wasn't at her best, but given the fact that this is her first major film role being spoken in English, she can be forgiven!....Personally I thought the age gap between Hanks and Tataou was too great for people to totally except a possible relationship. The best acting in the film came from the non-central characters, being Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina and Jean Reno, Paul Bettany also gave a really good performance playing Silas. In general, this film is good, nothing at all what is built up to be, but still worth the watch. Those of you who have read the book, get ready for some "odd" changes, you will find yourself coming out saying "in the book it wasn't like that etc...", if you haven't read the book, sit back enjoy the story that has caused so much (might I add unnecessary)controversy!
