Domino (2005)
Frenzied approach to directing spoils this film
15 December 2018
This is an example of style over substance. Watching Domino is an exhausting experience, and that's not altogether welcome. It goes beyond kinetic into frenzied, and Scott's inability to rein in his excesses is going to frustrate a majority of viewers. It's almost impossible to "get into" the movie, since the style is distancing, and there are no moments of quiet or introspection. Yes, the film is interesting, but it doesn't work. Like any failed experiment, it's fascinating to examine, but hopes to achieve something meaningful are foiled. Keira Knightley is feisty as the lead character and you should see this film, if you have to, for her.

Films like this are the reason 80s nostalgia is so understandable
21 September 2018
I have preferred The Thing or the Escape movies personally but there is no denying that among the many John Carpenter- Kurt Russell collaborations perhaps the most popular and adored is Big Trouble in Little China. I do not scribe to this as I have always found this film to be a tad overrated but the appeal is unmissable. Kurt Russell is smooth as Jack Burton and a pre Sex in the city Kim Cattrall is sweet. The story takes place in China and our titular characters run amok trying to battle magicians and martial artists. As I stated earlier I do not have a high opinion of the film(Both the Escape movies and The Thing are much better Russell-Carpenter collaborations) but you can see for yourself.

Ed Wood (1994)
a great biography on an eccentric individual
5 September 2018
Ed Wood is a fine collaboration between Johnny Depp who plays the titular character and the director Tim Burton. For those unaware Ed Wood was a film director in the 50s with a colorful personal life and a less than decent knack for directing. His films are often considered the worst ever though he genuinely thought he was making great movies. What shines through is Ed Wood's charisma and honesty and you can't help but like him. Johnny Depp as usual disappears into the role and he is ably supported by everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker to Martin Landau. This is a great film to watch if you are a fan of Depp, Wood or just good old-fashioned storytelling.

Legend (1985)
Fantastic visuals on this Tom Cruise fantasy film.
22 August 2018
Egend was Ridley Scott's follow up to his most personal film Blade Runner. And it was the start of his "average" phase. Legend is a decent film- it looks astonishing Ill give it that. But the story is basic and Tom Cruise is simply adequate. Tim Curry as the bad guy actually completely steals the show but overall this is just an okay film filled with pretty visuals. If you want to watch a fantasy there are other better films. Unless you're a fan of Ridley Scott or Tom Cruise I think you can safely avoid this.

Leslie Neilson is a legend
3 August 2018
The Naked Gun is a great series of slapstick comedy that will make you yearn for simpler times. Leslie Nielson at the end of his career started doing slapstick humor after the tremendous success of Airplane. Naked Gun started as a television show- Police Squad which ran for 6 episodes. The visual and verbal gags are downright hilarious and clever and just looking at Neilson one can start burst laughing. The supporting cast is really good from (ahem) OJ Simpson to Priscilla Presley and all have been etched in our collective memories. If you want a good laugh you cannot go wrong with Naked Gun.

A film I am sure will be referred to as underrated in the future
19 June 2018
Wow, this is a decent film- I was thoroughly entertained and this despite going in with low expectations. McG manages a great color palette and the action sequences are awesome. Sure, this isn't as great as The Terminator or Terminator 2 but it is surely better than T3 and a lot better than the other works in the cannon. Both Bale and Worthington are fantastic. Go watch Terminator salvation now.
