The Killer (2023)
Perfectly executed movie for thinkers
This is not an action movie. I repeat, this is not an action movie, even though there is a lot of action/shooting. This is a movie that contains action, and surprisingly, comedy (which I absolutely love and makes things more realistic honestly). This is a movie that IS art though (although not 'artsy fartsy like Tree of Life, if that makes sense...). I absolutely love this movie with all of my being and it's my favorite movie of the year. Just writing this review makes me want to watch it again. I don't even have the time to go into all the many, many reasons I love this movie, but I will say that I was absolutely captivated throughout. If you're a philosophical thinker, I would bet money you'll feel the same way. Some people find it 'boring' or slow-paced, but it absolutely isn't. Throughout the movie, you're provoked to think about good, evil and apathy, and the difference between them, while viewing a slice of life through an skilled assassin's eyes (so yeah, there's still always action). Also, what does it mean to succeed in this world we've built for ourselves? This movie was not only captivating, but it touched my soul and made me consider my philosophy on life and morality. I know it sounds dramatic, but if you're someone who enjoys being mentally stimulated, you will understand.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)
I like turtles
Lifelong turtle fan here. Had all the toys, dressed as them with my brother during Halloween, first movie theater experience was TMNT, watched every cartoon and movie, etc. Absolutely. Loved. This. Movie! This is what I've been waiting for! The last few iterations were ok, but they were definitely missing something (a lot). This one captures the heart of what TMNT is all about!! It has an awesome animation style, is hilarious and light-hearted, tackles real issues, great plot, villains you can understand but not FULLY get behind, and is just a complete joy to watch. I can't believe how much I loved this movie tbh. I was smiling through the whole experience, and laughing. Don't listen to the haters. Yeah it's not completely faithful to turtle lore, but it's completely faithful to turtle heart (cheesy but true, just like zza)
Digman! (2023)
Much better than I even expected!
I am utterly baffled by some of the reviews here. This show was hilarious, with nonstop quips that made me laugh out loud, not just slightly smirk. I can only imagine that the people giving these crazy low ratings are stuck up prudes who don't enjoy silly humor. If you've ever enjoyed anything of Andy Sandburg's, you're going to absolutely love this show. Tim Robinson's comedy really shines through as well in a very enjoyable way. Eight episodes was not enough!
That's all I have to say about that. This character count requirement is really annoying though. What's wrong with a shorter review? Like anyone every things, gee, I wish they'd drawn this review out longer with superfluous information that could have been summed up more succinctly...
Gil Bok-soon (2023)
Done right
I. Absolutely. Loved. This. Movie. I put it on really for my husband but I ended up loving it! It's an homage to kill Bill (love the name play with the title here Gil/Kill) with the world building of John Wick (I actually didn't care for John Wick very much tbh.) but it's also very much it's own thing. The acting. The character building/complexity. The action. The visuals. It's all so well done and just tells a great story. Some people seem to think there needs to be an obvious good guy to side with or the movie sucks. Sometimes there is no black/white, good guy/bad guy, but the point of a story is to tell a story, not preach right and wrong; this is a very well told story.
Slumberland (2022)
Absolutely must see
I. Am. Blown. Away! I'm not really into "kids" movies to be honest, so I went in with minimal expectations. But this film is incredible! I would be surprised if it's not a classic that people look back on years from now with fond memories and nostalgia. The writing and characters were incredibly well-written and set in a beautifully created world of wonder. Mamoa absolutely nailed it with this character. I got very strong Howie Mandel from little monsters vibes and it was awesome but he also gave Flip a life of his own. He brought flip to life so perfectly. In fact, everything about this film is perfect. My face is drenched in the tears of raw emotion.
Wendell & Wild (2022)
It's going to be a classic
I really don't understand all the harsh reviews but even if the consensus isn't complete love right now, I think it will be! I could totally see this being a classic, beloved movie. It's so moving, heartwarming and fun (and a bit spooky, which I've adored since I was a child). I absolutely loved it! It reminded me of a classic 90s movie in it's storytelling vibe. I also don't know why people are saying that this isn't for kids. This probably would have been one of my favorite movies when I was a kid hahaha. I mean, we dealt with Bambi's mom dying, batman's parents dying and so much more. Kids deal with stuff in life and it's typical that kids movies reflect that, not that I think this movie is only meant for kids AT ALL. It took me a minute to get into this animation style tbh but it really grew on me after only a lil bit. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
My Best Friend's Exorcism (2022)
Surprisingly delightful
I really loved this movie. It was so well written. No one was overly stupid and the dialogue is completely believable. It was both fun and scary at the same time. Not so much horror monster scary but a more nuanced, and multi layered psychological scary. How would your best friend in high school treat people if they were possessed by a demon? I'm only giving it nine out of ten because the last quarter of the movie fell a little flat and didn't live up to the first three fourths of the movie. But those three fourths were killer. I see that it's getting some flack but I could see this being a cult classic eventually.
The Unicorn (2018)
Way funnier than I expected
Based on the reviews, I didn't have high hopes but it was really funny! There was more subtle humor than I expected, which really makes it for me. I don't know what people expect from comedies now days but if you want to laugh and not take things so seriously for an hour and half, I highly recommend this movie.
Daniel Isn't Real (2019)
Old school vibe
I'll admit that I went into this with my typical low expectations but I was completely blown away! Both leads were incredible in their roles. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous and reminds me of the thriller/horror movies of old that I fell in love with as a teenager. Do yourself a favor and do not miss out on this modern day classic.
Interceptor (2022)
Loved it!
This one was one of those that was so bad it was good! I was highly entertained pointing out all the ridiculously unbelievable plot points and action scenes. It also had such a genetic script, I was literally saying the lines along with actors as they spoke them. How fun!
The Guardians of Justice (2022)
Fun, entertaining and original
If you only like shows that color inside the lines, this is not for you to be honest. I loved it though! It was entertaining throughout and I loved the unique format. I'm not even that into super hero stuff. Only have it a 9/10 because there were a couple episodes that fell flat, but overall a very enjoyable use of my time.
Murderville (2022)
Brilliant
Love this unique idea SO MUCH and laughed my posterior off every episode. I really can't understand the bad reviews unless you just don't like comedy. I need more!
Funhouse (2019)
Nailed it
I expected to watch this movie for a laugh and thought, it will either be so bad it's funny or maybe executed just the way I hoped. It was just as I'd hoped AND MORE! So well written and cast, I can't believe how well this turned out. It actually got me caring about characters I never thought I'd care about at all and was funny and interesting throughout. Loved it so much. One of my new favorites.
The Transfiguration (2016)
Hidden gem
Don't think that you're going into just another horror movie with this one. If you're into psychology, you will love the transfiguration. I was engrossed the entire time. A perfect portrayal of a warped mind. The story was very disturbing but told beautifully.
