Shazam! (2019)
Great for kids (not for adults)
This is a great movie for a family movie night, packed with teenage humour and childish supervillian acting and superpowers. Kids will have a blast! There is also a nice element of family messages and trust.
Otherwise this is not recommended, the script is cringeworthy and the elements of a superhero movie are outdated. It's like watching the 1960's Batman Tv series. Classic DC, unable to keep up with modern film expectations.
6 Underground (2019)
Unwatchable - too many camera angles and explosions
Typical action movie with a very simple plot.
Unfortunately the cinematography of this movie by Michael Bay was overly done. An excessive amount of camera angles and constantly jump-cutting scenes, trying to impress the audience is very exhausting to watch. Hence unwatchable.
There probably wasn't any budget left for developing the script, nor was the acting able to save this movie.
Beats (2019)
Cliche mixtape - skip this track!
High intensity start that appeared promising. However it flatlined throughout the movie with standard neighbourhood cliches of violence, industry greed, police brutality, marriage breakdown and teenage romance.
The focus on music and character development was faded into the background like a fake cover skin.
Save yourself from disappointment, skip this track.
Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
Skip this breakfast - Life of a socialite
This may have been a relevant movie at the time. However for today's standards and expectations it is quite a meaningless movie. Definitely not a classic, due to tasteless themes.
The movie explores the life a socialite, Holly who chooses financial stability over love and is in constant search for wealthy bachelors.
Her ignorance of drug dealing and lack of respect for men don't portray a loveable character either.
Likes:
Fashion
Witty lines
Points of improvement:
More character development
Remove racial scenes
The Meg (2018)
Avoid this one if you value your time.
A good shark movie is hard to do, but at least try. The lack of effort on this one was so visible even the actors struggled.
Likes:
- one or two comedy scenes
- injected a few social responsibility themes.
Points of improvement:
- start with a better storyline
- relatable relationships, the romance was too far fetched.
Please try harder and take pride in your work. It's embarrasing.
First Man (2018)
Different perspective on Neil, however flatline dull.
The focus on Neil provides a different perspective showing him as a man overcoming normal challenges. The significance of his task and the space race is less prominent as compared to other films.
Although these draw you closer to Neil's personal life this movie is unnecessarily slow paced and dull. Especially when there is minor change in dynamics, this can frustrate the audience to ponder and ask what is scriptwriter and director trying to portray.
Overall enjoyable for space enthusiasts, minus the action and drama.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Good concept but frustrating and irrational.
Likes:
- New concept on monsters and post apocalyptic survival
- Actors and acting portrayed the intensity of most scenes and situation
- Lack of dialogue built suspense and draws you into scenes.
Points for improvement:
- Remove irrational and illogical scenes. A lot of scene you will raise eyebrows and ask... really? This made it very frustrating to watch.
- Poor ending, appears to be a rush ending. Could have shown the struggle and development better.
- Tacky techniques to reveal information about the aliens.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Enjoyable Action Movie with Limited Depth
Likes:
- Visually stunning to watch
- Ties multiple Star Wars elements on how characters met and the how the Millennium Falcon was acquired.
Points of improvement:
- Develop more depth to the characters or additional unexpected information. Most things were already known or obvious.
- Plot was too simple, like a bubble gum action movie with little room for further expansion.
