La tour (2022)
Truly bad
A friend recommended it so I watched it. The opening was pretty good, then it devolved into human scum- hints of racial tension and I lost interest when a few young kids attack an elderly couple to take their dog, presumably to eat.
That's when I turned the playback speed up to 2 and after awhile just started skipping through it, pausing to watch a few more scenes and the last five minutes in which nothing really happens, nothing's explained, nothing resolved. (How did any of them survive for 5 years???)
The most boring Horror movie I can ever remember seeing and the only Horror is the time spent watching it.
Into the Night (2020)
Good idea poorly executed
First off, I'm only reviewing season 1, probably won't watch second season. It could have been an excellent show with better writing and intelligent characters. I won't comment much on the acting, I think it's fine but it's the characters and dialogue that are bad.
This show is a mixture of good and bad. Much of the story doesn't make sense, the pilot and passengers are a bunch of pre-teens in adult bodies mostly bickering with each other and almost clueless about the severity of their situation and unable to prioritize for mutual survival.
And they all make a lot of dumb decisions.
Now the good- when the story is focused on the main aspects, the disaster and their efforts to survive it, those parts are pretty good and engaging- I would give the good parts a 7 or even 8 rating.
All in all I still think it's worth a watch, especially with streaming when you can skip ahead over some of the inane dialogue.
The Last of Us (2023)
Over-rated
First episode was really good, would give it 8 stars, second episode maybe a 5, third episode a 1.
And lets set the record straight for those defending the show- one-
Bella is NOT doing a "great job"- her acting is blah, displays little emotion, and her sassy-ness doesn't fit the character or the situations.
Second, we DON'T dislike the third episode just because it's about two gay men. It's not a plus, but the problem is there's no real chemistry between them, the dialogue is boring, the story is boring and doesn't add anything to the overall story, these are characters we know nothing about and have no reason to care about. If this had been a stand alone special on Lifetime, it might be Ok, but not here.
For contrast, I like the gay couple on Star Trek Discovery- Stamets and Culber, and their relationship fits into and enhances the story.
We'll see how the next episode is, but soon "The last of us" may be referring to a small number of viewers still watching this.
Imawa no Kuni no Arisu (2020)
Just Bad...
Only seen season 1, and if I rated the first four episodes, I'd give it a 6 or even 7....
Then, they go to "The Beach" and the next four episodes are really bad- bad acting, weak characters, lots of senseless and sadistic violence, characters being stupid, acting illogically.
Sad, because this could have been so much better. The final 15 minutes of episode 8 seemed like it would get back to the interesting stuff but then the penultimate scene involves one of the antagonists just laughing like a psychotic Hyena.
You can tell they're going more for shock value than intelligent story and plot. I expected better.
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Vastly over-rated
And just good enough that you want to keep watching and see what happens but BORING teen romance spoiling the good parts.
Also, the two leads, whose romance threaten to stir a war between the Vampires and Witches, are both bad actors and there's no real chemistry between them.
There are plot holes and weak points through the story, characters with lots of secrets and acting stupid, and too many poor actors- not just the two leads, and pretty poor special effects too.
The show does do a few things right, when it focuses on the tensions between the creature types. This Could have been a much better show if they'd paid more attention, and cut about 15 minutes of dull dialogue out of each episode.
The Green Knight (2021)
Visual appeal, would've been a good short
If you're a fan of artistic visuals and don't care about plot coherence, story, acting, script, likable characters...- you may like this movie
If this had been trimmed down to a 30 minute film, I might have liked it, at it's current length-BORING- at one point I had to rewind part of it as I was so disinterested I forgot I was watching it while checking email on my phone, then turned the playback speed up to 1.25 which still seemed slow.
My recommendation- skip it and read a copy of the original tale.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Written by children For children
The good: Sets and special effects are great, ship is beautiful. Has some decent action sequences and a few good story lines. The gay couple's romance is actually well played and fits into the larger story, they're not token characters, they had a couple of subdued but poignant moments, very well acted.
The majority- Weak scripts, weak acting, mediocre main characters- and the over-focus on Michael Burnham- she'd be Ok as a supporting character but making her the Mary Sue of the show and retconning Spock is insulting and she doesn't have the charisma to pull off her part.
The most interesting characters- Captain Lorca and Phillipa Georgiou (sp?) are gone, and now it looks like Saru is gone too. Last episode I watched did give some increased screen time to the bridge crew and I hope they develop those characters much more in the future (pun unintended)
I don't mind a strong female lead, Ripley, Sara Connor, Gal Godot's first Wonder Woman movie, etc..., but not at the expense of having everyone around her be dumb or incompetent for her to shine.
It's disheartening, I liked the show a lot first season, but it's getting progressively less appealing. Wokeness for wokeness sake I don't like, it's shouldn't be a replacement for good storytelling and acting. Especially frustrating because it has a lot of potential that is going to waste.
The Green Hornet (2011)
Dumb and Insulting
Any fan of the original series probably shouldn't watch this, makes Van Williams character into an obnoxious, incompetent, frat-boy clown.
The story- weak, no drama. The script- weak, the action- a couple decent fight scenes but not enough to make up for the weaknesses, the characters - cartoonishly predictable.
Mary Sue, I mean Kato was Ok, would have liked to see him under a better director with a better story to work from.
In short, poorly written, badly directed mockery of the "real" Green Hornet.
Lost in Space (2018)
Much improved Season 2 brings this up to a solid 3......
Can't say the Acting is any better, but a little more exposure to other characters takes away from the pain of watching these Robinson family wannabe's. More actions makes season two almost enjoyable, but it's Better if you watch with the sound turned off so you can ignore the idiotic dialogue and use the Skip button repeatedly to get through the most tedious parts.
I think the writers are at least making an Effort, if some real Talent were added they could possibly turn this into the show it Could have been- if it weren't written for ten year olds
Nightflyers (2018)
Hauntingly bad
The premise- a crew of Immature, Incompetent, emotionally unstable people are sent out into space to investigate some alien ship. Their own ship, the Nightflyer also has an unstable and demented personality running around in the computer software.
How this ship was allowed to leave space dock should be investigated.
They are unprofessional and have a minimal sense of safety protocol, poorly acted, and I had a hard time caring about any of the characters so when creepy, Event-Horizonish stuff goes on, it's not very gripping.
Some segments are pretty slow, and some elements of the story seemed to come out of nowhere, but maybe because my attention lapsed while waiting for something to happen.
The effects are nice, the mood is decent, just empty of meaningful content, at a couple points of 'drama', I was Hoping the character would die, so the show could focus more on someone else.
The really disappointing thing is, there's a seed of a good show hidden within- just needed better actors, better script, better pacing, better direction, and better editing.
I dragged myself through the whole series because it was interesting enough that I wanted to know what happens, but painful and boring to get through it.
Death Race 2050 (2017)
I've seen Worse...
But anything worse than this I just quit watching. This one I started skipping through.
It Tries to be over the top campy funny, but the lines aren't good enough and the actors/tresses are just bad, with no comedic timing.
The Cars look cheap and the action in uninspired and unoriginal.
Major thumbs Down on this one
Doctor Who: Demons of the Punjab (2018)
Improvement but still lacking
Have to say, I'm not an original Whovian, saw a few Tom Baker episodes as a kid, and just took up the current run last year, so I have less "tradition" of the show to judge on.
The good: A reasonably well done and well acted emotional story
The not so good: An obvious plot "twist" that I saw coming from early on, and the aliens were cool but their part in the story was forced, had negligible impact and is often the case in weak Science Fiction requires some deliberate Obtuseness on the part of characters in order for there to be some proper misunderstanding that drives the plot.
Overall, I still enjoyed the episode much more the last few. I give it a 7, almost an 8 on it's own. If I were judging as a Science Fiction show I would only give it a 6.
Doctor Who: Arachnids in the UK (2018)
Arachnaphobia meets Dr. Who with failed logic, plot holes, and lame political satire
Another weak episode with a stereotypical bad guy businessman who built his house, er hotel, on top of an Indian Burial Ground, er- coal mine/toxic waste dump-.... in short, a lot of old ideas, badly done with poor special effects.
In conclusion: it's time for the story writers to Regenerate
Doctor Who: Rosa (2018)
No As bad as some say, but Definitely Bad.
Ironic much that an episode that should warn about prejudice and stereotyping should show such prejudice and stereotyping of all the white characters (with exception of Graham and the Doctor)
The "villain" was pathetically one dimensional, no logic or sense to his motives, no backstory, and his "plan" made no sense- as admirable as what Rosa Parks did, the Civil Rights movement would still have gone forward without her, if slightly slower.
They Could have done a much more interesting examination of the culture and times but instead opted for almost slobbering admiration of Parks and Dr. King, and some discussion of the time-travel-ethics of trying to Save MLK would have made the story richer and more believable..
I don't mind that they took on the issue so much as how badly they did it.
Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert (2018)
So disappointing...
Pros: Judas and Mary were good.
The rest- nice voices, but lacking range. Cardboard stiffness to the "acting", the renditions of the songs- was like people singing songs without knowing what the words mean- the inflections and emphasis don't match how real people sound when they talk- when you're furious and want your kids to settle down, does it sound like you're asking them if they'd like some Ice Cream? Probably not.
Well this isn't new, respect for the audience?
Till now this has been noticeably lacking
Who is This Jesus?
Why is he different? (he's weak in voice power and presence)
TV produces garbage by the sackful
