Maya & Marty: Will Forte, Amy Poehler and Jerry Seinfeld (2016)
It gets worse each week
For some reason I try to watch this each week, hoping that a miracle will occur and it will be funny, and each week I realize it's worse than the last episode. Last night was no exception.
I record it so I can fast forward through the unfunny parts which is 99% of it. When they came out with the "poop" sketch, I thought "How appropriate!", given that this whole show is pretty much poop. But it still wasn't funny...at all! I would say it was sophomoric humor but I don't want to offend any sophomores.
I thought maybe the Seinfeld/Larry David sketch might be funny but no....it wasn't. I was kind of looking forward to the Jiminy Glick sketch with Seinfeld but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), I feel asleep before it came on at the end. Yawn!
Maya & Marty (2016)
Why?
I keep wondering why SNL is still on the air (I haven't been able to stomach more than 5 minutes of it in over 20 years) and then they come out with this piece of crap. Perhaps they came out with this stinker to make SNL look better?
Anyway, I have always been a big fan of Martin Short and find it sad that his career is being euthanized on this show by Lorne Michaels and his crack staff (or is that staff on crack?). The ONLY funny bit here is Jiminy Glick, which Short created years ago so it really shouldn't even be credited to this show.
Apparently they were throwing back to the 60's and 70's when good variety shows were so prevalent on the airways....instead, it's making people throw UP!
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Different doesn't necessarily equate to good
Had to wait until this came out on DVD due to my hearing loss which makes it necessary to watch movies with closed captioning. Let me just say "Thank God for my hearing loss", since it only cost me $1.50 to rent.
Anyway, I watched with great anticipation as I am a Michael Keaton and Edward Norton fan. While I know it got all kinds of awards and accolades, it just wasn't for me. It had a whole "Being John Malkovich" meets "Chicago" feel to it. It felt like the director thought the more unconventional the movie was, the better it would be. I guess that works for the artsy-fartsy Academy types, but not for me. And from the beginning, I kept wondering when the annoying drum score was going to stop....and I'm a drummer!
As for Michael Keaton's acting, it was great. Although I felt like he felt trapped in his character. The scene where he flashed a brief smile and then was told to stop smiling felt real since I think he may have actually tried to be himself for a second and had to be reminded to get back into the dark character he played.
I understand this movie employed something called "Magical Realism" or some such nonsense. I enjoy magic and I enjoy realism but apparently not the two mixed together. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen to put it all together and give it that "Oh wow!" factor, but it never did. Instead, I was subjected to several "interpersonal relationships that delved into the human psyche" and try to figure out what the director is trying to "say". It's the same kind of "man's inhumanity to man" mumbo jumbo. So rather than sit here and write how terrible the movie was, I will simply say that it wasn't my cup of tea and I'm guessing that the general public probably feels the same way. But then I could be wrong.
Again, Michael Keaton did an outstanding acting job, I just wish it had been in a movie that I enjoyed watching.
Dumb and Dumber To (2014)
No Spoiler Here
I can assure you that I won't "spoil" it for anyone because my girlfriend and I left after about 45 agonizing minutes of watching this horrible movie...it spoiled all by itself! It's disappointing too because I was a HUGE fan of the original D&D but this was nothing close to that. Carrey and Daniels try too hard to recreate their roles with sub-par dialogue and a story line that is just lame, and it just doesn't work. That and the fact that they tried to "raunch it up" a notch I guess thinking it would make it funnier.....it didn't.
I'm all about silly comedy such as the original D&D and Ace Ventura movies but this movie isn't silly, just stupid.
This worst thing about it is that since seeing this movie was my idea, my GF says I'm not allowed to select the movies we go see anymore!
The Avengers (2012)
2 1/2 hours of wasted time
I don't want to waste more time talking about a movie that I just wasted 2 1/2 hours of my life watching but I feel it's necessary in order to maybe save someone from making the same mistake I just did by watching this stinker. Actually I slept through some of it so there was SOME valuable time spent in the theater. I would have walked out except my girlfriend look like she was enjoying it. This movie just sucked, plain and simple. It's the typical good guys have to save the earth from aliens. It did have all the emotions though.....The dialog was laughable and the acting made me want to cry. Unless you just like seeing buildings getting demolished and people who are impervious to bullets, explosions, and every kind of weapon known to man, stay home and save your money. I've watched better cartoons as a kid. It actually angers me that there are so many people in this world the simply LOVED this movie. This movie was so bad, I may never go to the theater again!
Gerry (2002)
That was a movie?!?!?!?
Well there's 100 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Actually I fell asleep about 15 minutes into it and having DVR, was able to rewind and fast forward through it. So luckily, it only took about 30 minutes of my life. I like Matt Damon, but I get the feeling he wrote and co-starred in (and I used the phrase "starred in" loosely) this piece of crap, on a dare. Like, "Hey Matt, I dare you to write a movie with no plot, no dialog and no entertainment value. If that was the case, he won that bet. Apparently if you're already a big movie star, you can do that. This looks like some cheap high-school social experiment. I've read some of the raving reviews on this site and can only imagine the people writing them were either 1) Friends of Damon, Affleck and/or the director, or 2) Smoking something.
