Tina (2021)
Great documentary on the fabulous Tina Turner
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Tina Turner is undeniably talented and since one of my most rewatched movies is indeed What's Love Got to do with It? I was excited for this doc I saw no promotion about until I saw it on HBOMax. I pushed play immediately.snd it does not disappoint.
I love how it went into the harder parts of her life and relationship with Ike without being super invasive. I really enjoyed learning things i don't think were covered in her biopic or just didn't know like her family dynamic or the fact that her parents abandoned them. Her mother did not know anything about her. Sad and tragic cause she seems like someone i'd love to know. That just goes to show me, I should work to be a success for myself with my own standards not to please my parents. I loved the cinematography of the doc. It was so well edited. I really like the archival footage of her past performances and recordings.
Fantastic doc 8/10.
Egg (2018)
meh, a comedy this isn't
I didn't get it. It was decently acted, I guess. I didn't agree with or at times even understand what was being talked about. I mainly watched it for Christina Hendricks.
If this was a comedy it was as unfunny as one could get.
I also found it quite hard to believe that a man would buy a building in the east village and it would be rent controlled for $415/mo. That wasn't a major plot point, it was just something else I just didn't get. What year does this take place?
I strongly disliked the men in this movie and the surrogate, her five phases made no sense and her reason for existing seemed to be for the pleasure of men. Her character struck as one that would sympathize with sexual predators.
A Ballerina's Tale (2015)
Good, but could be better
I don't know why I didn't watch this years ago as I love ballet and before the world closed I loved to watch ballet performances in Seattle (where I live).
As others have said this isn't necessarily earth shattering and Misty is a beautifully, super talented dancer.
I personally would have like to see them address the colorism. Yes she is black, but she is super light-skinned and has very straight hair.
I love the dance theater Alvin Ailey for this reason. You see amazing dancers in various hues.
I want ballet to be more diverse, but where are the performers that look like me? that have kinky hair and deep chocolate skin? What are the girls that look like that supposed to aspire to?
I can't recall the woman's name but the one she was in the scene with that she said she admired was lighter than Misty! But she was able to see herself in that woman as a child.
I just want there to be a principal dancer for the dark chocolate girls with afro puffs to see themselves in too.
And I don't think that was captured in this documentary.
Daybreakers (2009)
One scene ruined the whole movie
I honestly don't think this movies was that terrible overall. It was more like a one and done. One watch I never need to see it again. But just a word of caution to all the squeamish out there, there is one scene I vividly remember and can't get out of my head and tainted the whole movie. So Ethan Hawke's character is a doctor or something and is trying to create a synthetic replacement for blood since humans are a rarity and in high demand or something after the majority bar vampires. I'm not sure that was clearly explained in the beginning or I wasn't paying attention.
Either way, he's in the surgery room testing this thing and the patient violently projectile vomits. Gross enough. He's shaking violently and they are trying to subdue him. Then he calms down. And I knew that wasn't it. He explodes! I can stomach gore for the most part. Kinda. I watch a lot of horror, but I admit I do often hide behind my eyes if I don't want the full impact. My mind is insane. I have nightmares based on nothing. So I don't need help. Needless to say. I watched this movie for the first time like two weeks ago and that scene tainted the rest of the movie. I doubt it's a big deal to anyone else. But eh. Also, the ending didn't make sense to me, so spoiler, if drinking the blood of someone who has turned back turns you. Why weren't there a bunch of soldiers left? I admit, I wasn't paying rapt attention. So insert shrugging emoji
Truth or Dare (2018)
Petty Bad, but eh
I want to say this has potential. But it doesn't. I'm unsure if it was poorly written, but it was poorly acted. Production value was good.
I could go on, but seeing how this movie came out 2 years ago. I just want to say what bothered me the most was Markie was the cheater, yet she was more mad at her friend for blabbing than for her conscious choices to cheat. And her idiot boyfriend just goes along with it. He's not even upset!
No one really seemed that upset that their friend's were dying. It never seemed to affect them.
I watched it to the end. That was my choice.
Chris Rock: Tamborine (2018)
Yes it's bad...
I'm only writing this because of the reviews on here I've read, it is bad but I don't think it's racist.
It wasn't up to Chris Rock's old material standards. I do believe artists should evolve in their medium while keeping their foundation. Rock doesn't really do this well. He is, IMO, keeping his foundations but it isn't in an inventive or nuanced way. It was somehow topical and yet tired. I didn't believe the laughs the audience gave, a lot of it was cringeworthy. I think I only laughed at the Rihanna joke. And that was towards the end. Definitely not worth the wait.
But for the record, people need to stop saying what if a white person did the reverse and it's racist. Uh no. People really need to re-evaluate what racism is. What it was, was more tasteless and unfunny. But a black man in America being racist? Now that's a laugh.
