Is Genesis History? (2017)
Well done documentary
The movie covered all the essential points in support of Genesis being historically accurate. It was quite scientific and scholarly, so may be difficult for anyone expecting to be entertained. I was with someone who was anxious to leave, so missed the very very end where they recommend various places to get more information but wish I could have stayed.
Don't know if this movie will be viewed and considered by traditional evolutionists, but it seems to me they ought to review the possibilities presented here.
A Hologram for the King (2016)
Yawwwwwn
This movie can be summarized in about four sentences, and should have been. It is utterly dull, repetitive and pointless. The main story line is straightforward but uninspiring. The romantic sideline story is completely implausible. The flashbacks are irritating and often inappropriate.
Failed salesman sent to Saudi Arabia fails yet again but finds true love in a different culture. It was hard to care about the character, the woman who tries to seduce him or the woman with whom he falls in love. All terribly boring people. I cared much more about the fate of his driver, who had some personality.
Tom Hanks cannot save this loser!
Phoenix (2014)
Idiotic premise
The plot rests on the impossible premise that a friend would not fully disclose one's husband's betrayal. This makes absolutely no sense. I don't want to see you be hurt further by chasing after a lying scumbag of a husband, so I tell you that he betrayed you. I also tell you that he is after your family's money. It seems to me that this is the most difficult reveal, causing pain of course, but necessary pain. Why in the world wouldn't I ALSO show you the proof that he divorced you?
The movie inches tediously ahead for hours dependent on this ridiculous plot. One moment of unintentional comic relief: Nelly walks like a depressed Frankenstein for the first half of the movie - one assumes she sustained an injury in the camps that explains her flat footed gait. But, tada! All it takes is one comment from her husband and suddenly she's cured!
Even the title is irritating - nothing is redemptive in this movie - what waste of acting talent here.
Shroud for a Nightingale (1984)
Inane melodrama
Watched it all in one sitting...which made it easy to spot the multitude of unresolved/unexplained "motives." Lots of inconsistency, and an ending that could be spotted from afar. Among the plot challenges: Why DID Goodall conceal the inheritance issue? What was the significance of orphans? Where were the first and second year students? And the ridiculous transformation of Mrs. Dettinger from outraged, uptight grieving widow to blowzy tart.
Some elements were excellent, such as the way stress and fear stripped relationships to the bone, and Dalgliesh's conflicted emotions upon discerning the truth. Mostly though, it was terribly melodramatic and silly.
