Stateless (2020)
Watchable but immediately forgettable
Look, its really difficult to review this show. While I was watching I quite enjoyed it but as soon as it was over for the week it didn't linger with me at all. I found it quite sterile. My sympathies are completely with the refugees and I guess I would call myself a leftie. If I lived in a country where I was persecuted and my children were in danger I'd like to think I had the courage to seek refuge in another country. Given my political stance, I was disappointed that this show didn't make me feel more. It all felt contrived - and what disappointing tick-the-box casting! Do we really need to pick the same two actresses over and over and over again - just because they have a large fan base. Shouldn't the ABC be above that? I'm only surprised Rebecca Gibney wasn't in it as well! Given the limited opportunities for actors in Australia can't we give some other actresses a go? Some new faces would have been grand. Honestly, I've shed tears in a news segment about the plight of refugees - but these characters just didn't resonate. Of course, that could be me - not the show. I just don't care enough to really find out!
Cats (2019)
Fingers Crossed!!!
Look, I have to admit that I haven't even seen this movie, nor will I (I actually walked out of the stage show.) So WHY am I giving it 9 stars?? Well, I'm hoping that people will now admit that the movie version of Les Miz was also truly terrible, and a complete insult to the fabulous stage show. If the Cats movie achieves this, then I'm happy to give it 9 stars 😀
Five Bedrooms (2019)
So bland I didn't even notice the ad breaks
Brilliant!! Seriously?? You are very easy to please! Brilliant is a word I'd use to describe Aussie shows like Rake and Wentworth - but not this drivel. One more thing - if I hear the word quirky one more time (in relation to Oz TV) I'll scream! Haven't we evolved past quirky yet, or are we just going to make endless versions of Offspring?
Colette (2018)
Time better spent sleeping
This movie was SO pointless. I was astounded at the good reviews. I'm of the opinion that the critics were distracted by the one-on-one girl action and let their hormones do the judging. I won't say much about the acting except that not one performance inspired me and Keira Knightly certainly didn't elevate the material. I didn't see any reason for not casting a French actress to play a French literary icon. If this movie serves any purpose for me it would be that I know want to find out about the real Collette. I want to lift her - in my own imagination at least - out of this cinematic swamp!
