SPF-18 (2017)
Amazing
I laughed a lot! Keanu Reeves and Pamela Anderson not appearing on any frame with the main characters is just hilarious to me. The main character's best friend was definitely my favorite: pushing her to lose her virginity, hitting on her boyfriend constantly, the way she talked, avoiding important life decisions just because she "didn't feel like to", designing clothes out of nowhere that probably wouldn't be good to wear when surfing, yeah, what's not to like? Every character is so likable and relatable, I mean, I certainly can understand why the blonde hates her mom so much (despite her mom actually being kind of nice, rich and positive), her boyfriend straight up going against his promises by surfing and ignoring his gf after taking her virginity, and the country religious boy being a country religious boy.
I was once a film student and this feels like one of those projects your teacher asks with specific tasks you must complete (like "it need to be over one minute and have animation"), and nobody in your group knows or wants to do it, and y'all just do it to get your grades.
Anyway would recommend 10/10 thanks
Joker (2019)
Great in every way
The character development, casting, soundtrack, cinematography, colors, filming, sound... Every syncs perfectly on the tone the movie wants to give. While I watched it, I seriously felt connected to the characters - not because of their stories or personalities - but simply because it seemed believable. The character goes through a deep journey where his mentality changes gradually, with justification. The art on this movie was really well done, with the shots on the stairs, the lock on the actors faces, the colors playing the right meaning when needed. Phoenix's acting was also the best it could be.
But not only this movie is great as a movie, it's also something to help reflect about certain topics irl. Mental health treatment is difficult and, for many people, impossible to get, and that should be more addressed in media. It's a big take on the paper of government on people's lives. You can FEEL the misery on the characters, you can understand and relate to the social and financial imbalance that exists through many countries, just like it does in this fictional city, and how it's all connected to our views of the world, mental health and even culture.
I'd say I didn't enjoy some of the paths they took during the movie while I was watching it, but I ended up understanding every decision about the script at the end. It's really great for what it aims to be. I'm so glad I could watch this in a movie theater and hope more people can get to watch it without any distractions.
Swiped (2018)
Love it!
Love this movie. Great cinematographic, love how visually creative and amazing it is to the eyes. The sound is perfectly captured, the actors have so much to work with that their performances just exceed talent. Being a parody or not, it is executed with so much passion and it's not unfunny or boring at all! In fact, it is also not sexist and definitely not a bad way of expressing your views through your script. It wasn't badly written at all. :) Like, it didn't make me sleep or want to jump off a cliff at all. Super fun. I recommend this for all children, maybe some grandparents and tech lovers.
Diário de um Exorcista - Zero (2016)
Good to watch with friends
It's good to support Brazilian productions, mainly low budget ones. Horror movies aren't easy to pull or distribute around the country. The locations and settings are okay, and there's value to take from it. But only if you get scared - which is a big thing in horror movies.
The acting isn't all that great (apart from the possessed characters), the colors are too saturated, the dialogues sound odd, the sound design and quality aren't consistent and sometimes throws you off. The special effects are okay at times, and really bad at others. I won't go so into the story itself, but the pace, the balance between flashbacks and current events, and the settings for the characters makes the script confusing and not scary at all. The jump scares are predictable too. If you are easily scared, sure, go watch this movie. If you want to drink with a group of friends and watch it, it's also very fun (for the wrong reasons).
Not saying it is a hopeless production. The scenes in the dark are done well and there should be more of it in the movie. The director has a good chance of getting better, I believe.
Patient Zero (2018)
It just gets worse
I'm aware of the rest of the reviews for this movie, and a lot of it consists on the dubbing and the accents, but since I viewed it with subtitles, I'll try to focus on other parts of it.
Okay, I think a lot would be better if they didn't use so many cuts during the scenes. Some scenes are about the characters just talking, and still the director thought we have to see it from so many different angles; the hand held camera, many cuts, and the quick pace only makes it more boring when we get to the third act - that should be the action packed, the interesting one, but instead everything presented to us before only ruins it. It has no style, it's filmed like a random action movie (all the time, even when a character is crying, like come on, give my eyes a break), it doesn't feel realistic (or real on its own world), the soundtrack is forgettable and the flashbacks are poorly placed. The editing really throws you off.
Also, not a spoiler, but the soldier character is way too exaggerated, even for the intentions they had with him in the story. He's an emotional bad leader all of the time, so much that it makes you question why they couldn't tone down his dialogues and actions a little bit. The typical antagonist that acts poorly and they put something sad about him so you feel bad about hating him-- Except it doesn't work, and he just ends up being a bad character. Like most characters in the movie, actually.
