À Saint-Henri le cinq septembre (1962)
Saint-Henri as it was...
This short documentary portrays daily life in Saint-Henri, a working-class district of Montreal. From dawn to late night, the film shows various people and their occupation, as well as local landmarks. It is fascinating to see how urban life was during those years (circa 1960), and it helps minimize local poverty if compared to other countries.
There is no story told, but what makes the structure of À Saint-Henri le cinq septembre is the narrator's commentary on various social issues. It sometimes makes the people's condition look more special than it was.
While its purpose is to give a meaning to common things, the commentary seems more adapted for Saint-Henri as it was before World War II, and as depicted in Gabrielle Roy's Bonheur d'occasion for example. Could it be that Hubert Aquin was disappointed by what he saw ? Real life is no novel.
Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis (2005)
Better if watched in fast motion
Err... I've seen dozens and dozens of zombie movies, and this one is sure one of the worst (the worst being Children of the dead). The plot of Necropolis is not worth talking about, since it only revolves around the evil Hybra Tech Corporation. Basically, we discover what is going on there, and it is not nice. End of plot.
The rest of the movie is dedicated to grade-B zombies walking around the place, chomping who they can in a rather not convincing manner.
The filmmaker seemed to have run low on ideas. Zombies walk. They get shot. Blood squirts on the wall. Again, and again. The least I can say is that there is a lack of imagination. I did not count the many times were the 'heroes' run out of ammo. It is so common in horror movies, that you can only be surprised once. In this movie it happens like every five minutes.
However there is a good way to watch it, which I discovered after nearly falling asleep. Watch it in fast motion. The end will come quicker, and you will be less disappointed.
