Primbon (2023)
where's the storyline?
What is the overarching moral lesson derived from the narrative? Are we to place our trust in Primbon? Favoring superstition over medical consultation? Should we abstain from venturing into the mountains on purportedly "cursed days"?
Despite the inclusion of renowned famous actors and visually stunning locations, the film is hampered by bad and deficiency of a compelling storyline. The narrative, intended to elicit a sense of trepidation, stumbles in its execution, rendering the purported fright factor ineffectual and contributing to an overall experience that is marked by an unanticipated awkwardness and lackluster quality. While it endeavors to instill a sense of fear, the execution ultimately falls short, resulting in a rather lackluster and awkward ending scenes.
Mantra Surugana (2023)
ultimate boredom
I tried to watch this since it's on the Netflix. However, brace yourself for the ultimate boredom! Steer clear of this junk if you value your sanity. Another dead boring and dead typical horror, Yet another riveting episode of generic horror brought to you by people who probably suffers from severe FOMO and blindly hops on every horror bandwagon without a clue about crafting a decent fright fest.
The storyline is a spectacular disaster, the acting is a true masterclass in terribleness, and hold on tight for jump scares that pop up more predictably than clockwork every 30 seconds. What a thrill! Big yawn, indeed.
Penyalin Cahaya (2021)
almost flawless....
While everything is so 'perfect', the cast, the storyline, build-up the emotion, even the camera works. Alas, the title itself ruined the whole movie. So we knew the culprit is the Photocopier... :-/
Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion (2022)
Between Scary Level and Storyline...
While the first movie focused on the storyline and building the mystery, we were kinda hoping to get all the answers on the second one. However, the director seems to be trying to drag the answers into the next instalment and leaving us with more questions.
This second instalment of Pengabdi Setan, Communion, seems more focused on the 'nail-biting, hiding-behind-hands' terror aspect of horror movies. YES, it's scary. However watching this movie is like riding a roller-coaster. The adrenaline rush while watching it is there. However there was nothing much to talk about or discuss afterwards. Audience left with more questions, interpretations and It was sorta like a relief feeling that it was over.
Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad movie. For a suspense and horror fans in Indonesia, both Pengabdi Setan is a must watch. I believe they set a new standard in Indonesian horror cult.
Joko Anwar really knows how to play the game in building the tempo, terror and tension to the final outburst. Although sometimes some scenes felt too surreal and suspended my disbelief.
Cinematography is a top notch as usual. Camera works are amazing and how he shot some scenes were genius. Location set, props, wardrobe, hair style etc. I was amazed with how Joko injected some of 80's history into the storyline. That's smart. The opening at Boscha was genius and explosive. Promising something very eerie for the next two hours.
Though there are a few minor flaws and plot holes in the story, such are language choices (c'mon man, nobody use "cuy" or "bokap/nyokap" in that era), repetitiveness from the 1st movie, and too much strobe lights, but for me, there will never be a perfect horror movie.
Pengabdi Setan 2 is not better than 1st, but the film is best at recapturing the classic horror. I just wish the storyline could be stronger, or balanced with all the roller-coaster level. The craft is amazing and the locations are terrific. Pengabdi Setan 2 doesn't is not a game changer, but because of the filmmakers' ambition and love for the genre, it is a marvellous experience.
So stop complaining about this is missing or that is missing. Just enjoy the movie. It's worth a watch. It's been a long time that a movie has scared me this badly...
Kuntilanak 3 (2022)
would give -1 rating if I can
The title says it all. Clearly shown Rizal is not a horror fan. Especially the majestic urban legend of KUNTILANAK.
He lacks of everything that horror movie should be. Not sure why he never learned from experience, instead, he keeps doing it. Again and again.
Only focus on how the scene looks good. How the angle lightings can be dramatic. How the sfx can be as good as MCU. That's all.
It's OK if it's a tv commercial or music video, which is his expertise. But not a movie. Let alone a horror genre.
So, unless those factors that you're looking for, stay away. Save your money and your time for something else.
Sorry.
KKN di Desa Penari (2022)
Don't believe the hype
Another classic sample on how a good story brought into a film. Lack of emotions, plot twist, mood, etc.
Don't get me wrong. Yes, you'll get what you read in the story. Yes, I know that's how the story goes. But usually this is how a film director being tested. How to turn a descriptive narration into a good visual (aka Cinema).
And frankly, Awi Suryadi has failed. Not 100%, but I don't see any emotion in this movie as when I read the original story. While it's good to tell A-Z in the writing format, but it lost the impact when it turned into a motion picture. Looks like he just put everything the story and the lines of the original twitter's thread into 2 hours visual without the details and plot, so it looks dull.
Good side; thumbs up for the cinematography & production crew who brought the village alive. The actors/actress also did a good job, especially Tissa Biani (Nur).
Silam (2018)
same old same old. Mobe along. Move along.
Just another horrible Indonesian horror flick. Jump-scare and ghost that came out every minute. Bad directing, bad acting. And storyline... What storyline? Dear Risa Saraswati, you've chosen the wrong director.
Kuntilanak (2018)
Dear Rizal...
Dear Rizal Mantovani, if you read this, and I hope you read this. Please stop making horror movie - especially the one with respected urban legend - stupid.
I know this movie came out before Pengabdi Setan, but now at least you can learn from it. Horror movie is NOT a music video. We don't need your pretty scene, we don't need a genius angle, we don't need beautiful cinematography. All we need is good storyline, good acting and script.
Seems you only depend on your shocking sound effect and spooky background music while there is nothing scary going on, on the scene. Are those your ultimate weapons? Well I'll tell you; Those kinds of jumpscare factors are sux. Doesn't work anymore. "Basi!"
Please be more creative with your storyline and don't underestimate your audience. This is for y'all Indonesian Horror Movie Director wannabe.
Hope your next one will be better. Thanks.
