The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Finally, some sleep! Keep the episodes coming please!
I didn't plan to watch this because I'm a lord of the rings fan and new they had no regard to the original story (based on interviews), but I'm glad I gave it a try.
I'm an insomniac. I have such a difficult time falling asleep and have tried everything. One night I was laying awake and thought I'd give this show a try.
I had the volume low to avoid waking my wife. The visuals were great right away, then the characters were introduced. The characters werent likeable or interesting at all, and nothing about the movie was engaging. But 25 minutes in and I was asleep!!!
It was incredible, I thought it was a coincidence, but I had to know. So the next night I started episode 2 on low volume, and again it was so insufferably boring I fell asleep after just 20 minutes!
This show is incredible, and only costed $700 mil, which is about half of the cost of sleep drug development. As for the show, I'm not sure what's going on at this point, but the first halves of episodes are subpar. I hope they make season 2 and keep the same boring writers. Thank you!!
Lorenzo's Oil (1992)
Enjoyed it as a medical student
I was rotating through genetics and a patients newborn screen revealed ALD. The attending recommended I watch the movie. I'm glad I did.
It's a rare disease, so it helped me remember the symptoms and pathophysiology. Unfortunately, Mr. Odones understanding of the disease turned out to be inaccurate and the oil doesn't seem to help in all cases, but he did good for the time. It's a great story that teaches empathy and how doctors don't know everything.
Update on the movie: The Odones have passed away, Lorenzo at age 30. The international myelin project is ongoing and continues to make progress, the odones friend Patricia is the current president of the organization. It has branches in 3 countries.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
I can sort of see why people like this
The plot sounds like something I'd really enjoy. But it just felt drawn out. Half the movie is in the tax office. If I read the plot I would understand why people seem to universally love it, but I think my expectations were too high that I felt like they could've done so much more with the concept instead of most of the movie showing a series of fight scenes before you really understand why they are fighting.
How to with John Wilson (2020)
Not as good as Nathan for you.
Nathan for you had me on the floor laughing through the whole series, it is near the peak of comedy. I really do enjoy this kind of humor, but I laughed just twice during the first episode and the rest of the first episode was incredibly boring. I really hoped I would find something like Nathan for you with this. I don't mind the awkward and cringy humor, but it needs more humor. Maybe it gets better, I'm not sure.
Mulan (2020)
The best part
The best part about this movie was how great the cities look. They make mulan extremely overpowered without training, other than training to not hide her power (captain marvel?). Femenist hero films want to make the protagonist so perfect and powerful they ruin a good story (like Rey on star wars and captain marvel). It would be a great and inspiring story if they didn't try so hard to avoid giving a girl flaws, the overpowered hero ruins it. The other characters had no depth. The entire story is 'mulan learns to be herself', everything else are minor details and forgettable. But the colorful cities looked cool. I recommend the cartoon version. That one is great.
