Midnight Special (2016)
Jeff Nichols uses his own son to create one of the great cult classics
For those of you who know Jeff Nichols and his own magical ways, foreseeing his film Mud with the characters while he was in university, know Nichols truly believes magic exists out there and he has created in his own life and in now slowly building canon of exceptional films. Nichols is the John Lennon of movie making, often off beat, mesmeric in content, unconcerned with Hollywoord tripe twists and a an intense focus on the story he has to tell. While Nichols could before this be seen as an arty indie film maker, :"Midnight Special" special with its incredible cast, special effects, length of film solidies Nichols in the gran theatre of movies. While this received a low key release and lack of cinema exposure sadly, hero movies and rubbish for the masses take away there, true aficionados of film making can glisten at the obsession to detail and even far from "mindless" ending, story, Nichols, which either way tells the story of a born accidentally born in the wrong dimension, Einstein's theory of mutiple dimensions is now well recognise or even he comes from the Jung;s unconscious collective which scribes has further furnished with a collective conscious, It is now scientific fact we are energy sources, chemo-electrical and the young buy has already devised his energy sources to operate at a level humans do not know until we enter the collective conscious. Nichols avoids any heavy rhetoric which is wise and focuses on a tiny part of the journey, ensuring ongoing suspense and intrigue.
It is not without its faults and Nichols could have let a little more on where the boy originates from, his script also lets him down at times, the tension between Shannon and his friend the state trooper about the wellness of the boy is over emphasised to create a middle sequence, the state trooper excellent played by Joel Edgerton who seems able to play any role (starred as the antagonist in The Great Gatsby), it is a solid and understated performance by Kirsten Dunst as the boys mother. Michael Shannon however, dominates the screen and he has formed a formiddable coupling since several other movies and recently "Mud" with Nichols. The average american will put stilly and lack of knowledge of the portents of the film, and do not be put off by the shamelessly 6.6 rating while duds like Dunkirk get 8 just biggest its a blockbuster Americans rate it on its hype factor not content, Lastly, Adam Driver who is becoming a very special actor in Hollywood excellent plats the NSA agent searching for the young boy. Sam Sheperd makes a cameo at the beginning and Nichols adds another special title, much like he is the new Spielberg ignored by the mainstream but slowly crafting a canon of movies that will soon even eclipse the Nolan brother's, who disastrous Dunkirk has sunked their reputations excuse the pun. Wonderful movie,
Journey's End (2017)
Claustrophobia, of paranoid soldiers is astonishingly craftsmanship
On first accounts you are immediately grabbed between a british war film and the lack of consciousness of American films. The film holds no relevance if it was original theatre form as a trench wouch perfectly suit the "walls closing in" feeling of a filthy rat infested trench. The rats are over looked, here are men preparing for battle and they cannot kill a rat. At there greatest moment of dehumanising the characters are turned inside out, like a mirror they see their inner consciousnesses. Interesting Bettany was going to play Claflin, but the director found Bettany's display of strength for all the men altering the story. Only at the end when Bettany cuts himself shaving and begins parting with his most important items during a routine raid does one see him begin to ravel. His is the archetype of love in the film, as not as just joung Ask Butterfield quickly bonds with him Claflin the unit commander stating death in the eyes breaks down after Bettany dies and lets his teats pour down Ask, his nephew who he has barely said a word too, Bettany has transcended the fact he will died in that muddy disgusting trench, who the Unit Commander, holding onto hos last threads of sanity, still believes in his drunken delusional state he willl survive. Seems mentally unconsciously safe in the bunker, his only 2 moments of "love" remove him from the setting of the war but won't pivotal plot moments. The mood, the atmosphere, the foreboding the dark walls reflecting of a grim reaper all sum up what the Nolan brother's could have served up in Dunkirk, instead of a rubbish American we all hours of our lives on. The gorgeous Ask Butterfield, Trotter, Mason, and weakling soldiers are allowed character development, evn the stern General you see three brief times, one is allowed he is "I couldn't really give a damn. Two majors errors that ruin movie, calling it"Journey's End" meant as well knew before it started the outcome, even if your knowledge of the Spring German Offensive, and in no army in the world is a soldier allowed to ask the division he wishes to join, especially as such a young age, the alter ego of a brush care-a-less General who know the Germans where attaching in 3 days times would not send his grandson his grave. Paul Bettany such an established actor now is a waking academy award. It is time he receives that award.
Hangman (2017)
Excellent, underrated thriller
Reviewers may some this is formulaic but there are unique touches that made hangman special. Bringing back Al Pacino was wonderful for me, Kar;l Urban is a broadway theatre performer so reviewers who criticised his acting know nothing about acting. His is big robust and intellilgent and fits the role of a homicide detective unlike brad pit who looks like a model. why the obsession with 7? the story keeps you riveted and second guessing and the police never know what is happening in these films the police are usually so expertly tracking the killer. The captain as female of the police force is another great move, and the journalist tagging along though questionable adds spice to the overall effect.
Id love a sequel and bad reviewers from dumb viewers and IMBDs odd rating system put some good fillms dwn and some rubbish with high ratings. Dunkkirk is perfect example a complete snooze fest as boring as hell and the nolan's lapsing into their own vanity to make utter rubbish but it is rated 8? Atonement had a much better version of dunkirk and if you want to see the real dunkkirk rent Atonement from many years back.
Karl Urban deserves more roles and I hope Al Pacino keeps on going.
The 13th Friday (2017)
slow moving. monotous ploy that never reaches concludion falls almost into B GRADE HORROR
I had hiigh hopes for this film bit it see,s to drag along and become fixated with the narrative rather than a scary movie. we understand the plot in the first 20 minss and then the movie seems to run out of ideads of how to steer the movie forward. some of the acting is bad and at this point it starts to resemble a B grade horror. only some good graphics and fast paced ending recover it from imminent disaster. 4/10 ratings from most are a fair award and better script writer who could have made this an excellent horror. still dont know half the story aftter wasting an hour the movie just ends. for horror fans only. Netflx reviews
Family Possessions (2016)
Great oopportunity for a classic horror that flops at the end
Family possessions was surprisingly excellent for 90% of the movie, It is delicate creepy horror and though it borrows some cliches it has very original storlinre, the problem is the end makes no sense and collapses what would have been a wonderful film. It also leaves a massive loose end, where and how is the grandmother in the story, she is central to the film but makes almost no contribution.
the end supposedly was meant to be a twist with the father but that goes horribly astray, a man just suddenly does not turn into a mass murder plus at the beginning of the movie the lawyer clearly says if the daughter dies the house and money goes to charity so the father would have gained nothing. its a massive whole in the plot.
i have tried not to give away names and direct details but its worth watching.........
Victor Crowley (2017)
Victor Crowley creates great new sense of horror is excellent
Instead of copying 30 years of spoof b b grade horrors Adam Green captures all the essence of an excellent horror with delicate comedic touches. He combines the two genres without weaking the script, instead every line, every scene is masterfully planned.
Adam Green isn't out for horrifying scare, which is refreshing as he almost revolutionises his own genre. His actor selection, and scence progression never leave a dull moment or confusion.
Dave Sheridan steals the show and his perforamce is worthy of all little momemts you may miss. In fact Green aloows every actor/actress to express and explore a personality unusual in horrror but still maintain the horror factor in the creative newly created Hatchett character victor crowley.
iIt is a pity and this is my only spoiler so don't read if you plan eatch still that these great characters except two all die and therefore cannot be reprised in the next episodes of Hatchett.
No one knows how Green, the director and writer plans to continue the series but maybe by reinventing the scanrios is part of its charms.
Don't except big scares but excellent film making in a new twist on the horror theme.
Dave Sheridan's character will be sorely missed but two important characters do survive. 9/10
Keeep going Adam Green and ignore any bad reviews you construct a masterful art that crosses genres.
The Strange Ones (2017)
Brillaint, mesmerising, surreal
It feels half the reviewers did not even watch this movie. Americans need big endings or every detail spelt out to them. it is so refreshing to see an American movie take an artistic path that deals with real life issues as well as the surreal aspects of life we all do deal with. The tone, soundtrack, script, directors and performances of James Freedson and Steve Pettyfer are worthy of an oscar but of course the Academy won't notice this film.
i am dumb found at the reviews and lose respect for Americans intelligence levels. This film is a worthy 9 out of 10 and i recommended for someone who wants to watch a movie where you actually have to think for yourself.
The directors actually carve out the movie A to Z there is no confusion or open ended questions. You just have to open you mind! but seeing the films making money in the USA I am glad Steve has turned down commercial roles and is plotting a career patiently as a real actor not based on his looks.
It is sad this film will just pass by most move goers as it deserves a place as a cult classic like Donnie Darko. Ironically as surreal as Donnie Darko was and made no sense at times fans and critics loved it.
why The strange Ones has been given such ignorant reviews is clearly that the viewer did not have the brain matter to understand the subject matter. I LOVED THIS MOVIE.
Dunkirk (2017)
Dunkirk was terrible
The title reveals a huge battle scene where was this? Aimless british soldiers wonder the beach and that sums up the film. Hitler in real life hit the beaches with enormous air attacks and sea torpedoes. This war film is turned into a drama piece and selection of actors was even worse. How does it get 8 out of 10 - this is a sure 3 out of 10 and the that just because of the music.
worst nolan movie and poor hype to boost it at cinemas!
Nolan should rewatch this with a neutral crowd pin pointing how he could have created battle scenes and tension on the beach not eating bloody jam sandwiches.
He completes his own casting which shows a director in love with his own work Styles fails for me as an over aggressive junior soldier - and the ending is the worst if Hitler new tiny boats were picking up the soldiers he would have wipped out the entire stupid idea
3/10
