Sunrise (2024)
Not sure what everyone was watching but this was a good film.
Based on some of the reviews here, I'm not sure if anyone actually watch the movie all the way through.
The subtleties of the theme and the nuances of the subject were spot on. Racism at its finest and the hero that chooses to step up and put himself in front of it.
Was it mistakenly put in the wrong thematic category? Yes. This was not horror in the slightest. This was more drama thriller.
Who cares if the writers chose to use a vampire as the hero. It's the writers prerogative to make their hero anyone they would like. They chose a vampire and took that subject into a different direction.
Guy Pearce and Alex Pettyfer were phenomenal as their characters, taking all the liberties with their characters and adding the depth of the subject and making it worth watching.
The flashbacks provided the understanding to Pettyfer's character and his reasoning for being the hero for this family. Just because they didn't focus on the strength and speed at every turn of the character doesn't mean that you didn't see it. It was there but it wasn't the main focus and that is why it made so fulfilling to see it when it did happen.
I was a bit confused by the ending but that was it. Overall, good atmospheric film. And no I don't have anything to do with the film, so my review is 100% my opinion.
They/Them (2022)
Could have been better, but wasn't the worst thing I've seen!!
Look, this film isn't for everyone. We get it. If you don't like it rate it like that but I must say reading some of these reviews really does show you some of the worse homophobes out there.
Now to the review of the movie itself:
First the premise, a group of kids, who identify as other than straight (I say it that way so I'm not excluding anyone but the straights), sent by their parents to a conversion therapy camp. For you straight people, they existed and still do exist today. Headed by a seemingly, at first, normal individual (which we will get to later), and his group of counselors, doctors and groundskeeper. This topic has been and will be controversial until it has been eliminated as a form of torture wrapped in a blanket of hate. Not a normal topic to cover for a horror movie but definitely had the stepping stone to being a great horror movie. Here's where it fell short in my opinion: not enough horror. Yes, the topic itself is horrific but to lump the majority of the horror into the last 30 minutes left you feeling like it was a secondary thought for the premise of the film. If the horror had been ratcheted up throughout the 1 hour and 44 minutes of film, providing a feel of danger and trepidation, I feel viewers would have had a more pleasurable experience.
Characters:
Kevin Bacon: owner and operator of conversion camp. At the beginning of the film, I had high hopes a for this character and throughout Kevin did an overall great job pulling it off. But when you hear Kevin Bacon going back to camp, you envision Friday the 13th, which this was not. I believe he did the best with what he was given and pulled it off.
Theo Germaine: camper. Theo is a consummate professional actor and pulls off the character well. It would have been great to provide them with more action sequences to show their growth throughout the film. The shooting scene in the middle of the film doesn't cut it.
The rest of the cast: Carrie Preston, Anna Chlumsky and so on so forth. Great names but I have to say, I figured out the killer by the time the second act started, so the big reveal wasn't so big at the end.
This could have been so much better without a lot of the social commentary and don't get me wrong I love social commentary as it brings injustices to light where others don't always get to see. But this really could have been a documentary instead of a slasher flick if they had just removed the killings.
Overall: I gave it a 7 since the movie itself wasn't horrible and it just lacked pace and follow through. It missed some great opportunities to really show how gay people experience the same things that straight people experience. We aren't any different.
Side note: For everyone on here that posted negative things like 'we get it, you are gay. We don't need you to prove it and so on. Gay people like regular movies too, so, stop making these exploitation films.' Sadly, if you think this was exploitative (which is wasn't) and that gay people like regular movies as well, you are correct we do like regular stuff but we also want to see ourselves represented in all genres or showing us period. Not all lifestyles and choices appear the same, so allow it to happen. Leave comments like that in your head, they aren't needed to be said out loud.
Again this is strictly my personal opinion.
Camp Murder (2021)
Some stories are beaten to death and this is one of them.
It amazes me the amount of horrible acting that happens in this film. I'm all for independent low budget films but at least make the dialogue flow and not cliche. The old lady in the car discussing her lady needs and the doctor confessing to a one night stand as the love of his life is beyond ridiculous. And the actors trying to play younger than their actual age, really? Trying to portray like you are in campground when I'm fact your are in someone's backyard was beyond believable.
