Blinded by the Light (2019)
Nostalgic and Multigenerational
I did not grow up in the 80's nor in England. I grew up hearing my parents listen to Bruce Springsteen. But what this movie offers is a fantastic and unique blend of relatable story and mind growing art. Those looking to listen only to music should look elsewhere- this film is not a musical, it is a story of a teenager. I found the acting to be really good, the dialogue realistic and artsy, the characters easy to empathize with. It is a coming of age story and no matter what generation you are from I think almost everyone can relate to that element. The theme of family and coming to know who we really are along side our family is universal. Can't wait to buy this when it comes out on BluRay.
The Village: Yes or No (2019)
The Drama
This show is equal parts frustrating (adults acting like they've never messed up or simply for the in your face Christian religious slant) and good. This episode had improved dialogue that I hope continues to improve. But next time? Let's skip the gospel music in the bar please (do the writers not see the irony in this).
The Village: Laid Bare (2019)
Why
The last scene made no sense. The character Sarah is so unbelievable and it just keeps getting worse. When she kissed Nick the director could have gone one of two ways- leave the audience wanting more and routing for them harder, and strengthen the dynamic between Sarah and Nick (and give us all some much needed empathy for Sarah) or do what they did. It fell very flat. But hey, the actress who plays Sarah looks like a truly good kisser and pulled off the physical aspect of the sex scene well. She needs better directing, script, and character development in the future. This is the shows biggest flaw!
The Village (2019)
Policially Charged, Script Needs an Overhaul, Interesting Enough
The bad:
Katie is a pregnant teenager. If we're going to talk about abortion in the same old hollywood cliche way, could it at least be with an adult character? The way this is handled kind of makes me sick. On that line, the morher daughter dynamic between the two characters is frustrating. Lack of character dimension in the morher character, Sarah, leaves a lot to be desired. The way they portray her leaves a religious taste in my mouth. Could be fine if it didn't make for such a phony one-sided character. Sarah's life is getting upended, she should be feeling something or dealing with it in a way that's realistic and dynamic.
The show comes off as fluffy from all the cons.
The script is pretty terrible. The directing isn't that great. A few of the actors should have been cast better (though the good ones are actually pretty good).
What keeps me watching this show is the community aspect. I like the idea of the show. I like how is follows journies on multiple characters. Sticking with it on an episode by episode basis. I'd be surprised if this gets a second season. We'll see how it goes.
The Mindy Project (2012)
Good Through Season 4
After season 4 I had to motivate myself to keep watching. The characters just got too whiny and the quality it has in season 5 is lacking. I can't even finish the season/show from here.
Las chicas del cable (2017)
Season 2 Running Rapidly Downhill
Season one was ok. There are minor annoying inaccuracies as other people have said with the music. The subtitles are also not in line with the english voiceover dialogue.
But, season 2 has me so frustrated over the flimsiness of the characters personalities and over the top obvious mistakes. And the music gets noticeably worse in season two....
Blindspot (2015)
Wanted to love it
The pilot episode was great and the concept is captivating. Beyond that, the script is basic and lackluster, the execution of the plot is messy and at times too obvious. The soundtrack carries the show. The acting beyond the two main characters and the "puzzles solver" needs serious work. I keep watching season 1 hoping it will get better but I wish I didn't start watching it because you could cut down the entire episode into about 5 minutes and get the gist minus the entire episode.
