Return of the Jedi (1983)
Not bad but pretty corny
The first Star Wars movie was the best although it's easy to become interested in the characters and want to know what happens next. The sequel, "The Empire Strikes Back" was well liked although it gave "evil" the upper hand. And now this movie,"The Return of the Jedi" is corny but with a positive, hopeful ending. Where they really went wrong is when they changed the ending. When first released, the end showed the "ghosts" of Obi Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Anakin Skywalker. They were portrayed as seen in the film. After the prequels were released, they changed the actor from Sebastian Shaw to Hayden Christiansen. Bad move. So if they did this, why didn't they change Obi Wan to Ewan MacGregor? I think they should have left well enough alone. I had to go get an old VHS copy of the movie to see it as it was originally filmed. Just because you CAN change something because of technology doesn't mean you should. They should have left it alone.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Disappointing
SPOILERS!! Don't superheroes WANT to be superheroes? Was this the right answer for an actor who doesn't want to be a superhero anymore? The "hero" now wants to live a secluded life with a thief; and he has a "fling" with the villainous "board member" who infiltrates the company to gain enough trust to attempt to destroy it and the city. The movie is too long and shows more of the decline of civilization giving human beings more reasons to "do wrong" than "right." And we're done, right? Wayne Manor is now a home for the boys. No more Batcave. Mr. Bale once stated that he did not want to do a film with a "Robin," but since he's done after this, they decided to make John Blake's real first name "Robin." Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance was one thing I liked in this movie.
True Grit (2010)
Not bad, but not great and the original was better
I am not a fan of westerns and not a John Wayne fan but my husband is a John Wayne fan and has the original True Grit on DVD. We watched the original last night and saw the remake this evening. We heard others rave about it. It was okay, but I found many parts boring for some reason. It lagged. Again, I am not a fan of westerns, but watching the original last night was much more enjoyable. We weren't necessarily going to watch the entire movie and my husband was surprised that we (I) did. We both like Jeff Bridges (we saw him in A Dog Year which was okay and Crazy Heart and he was good in both but enjoyed Tender Mercies with Robert Duvall more than Crazy Heart) but it just wasn't the same. And my husband said this isn't a movie he would purchase.
Knocked Up (2007)
Bad taste in titles so why would any "decent" person want to watch this?
It doesn't matter what any of these movie watchers say about this movie. The degradation of society is very evident in the title alone. I read a few of the other comments noting the poor spelling and poor grammar (and I am one to admit that my level of English skills is not high). I will never understand why so many people find tasteless comments humorous or amusing. A good friend tried to encourage me to watch this; after the first few minutes of foul language, this friend decided not to watch it either. Don't lower yourself to this whether or not others think there is any validity to the "story." It most likely depicts the continuation of a crumbling society and lack of any ethics in mankind. Entertainment doesn't have to lack integrity or class.
Letters to God (2010)
Very touching, full of life's lessons
This is a wonderful story. Many will probably avoid it just because of the title. But for those willing to give it a try, it has a lot of good messages. It shows the courage of a young boy who faces mortality much earlier in life than most. It shows the ability for those with alcohol problems to realize the problem and change for the better. It shows the ability for children to learn to get along with each other. It shows the strength of a loving family. The mini stories at the end are uplifting. Give it a try. I preferred it over "Left Behind" which appears to be more like a soap opera. Fireproof is very good, though tough to watch since it shows the strains of a marriage. Letters to God are the inspiring words of a child with cancer.
Love Affair (1994)
Heartfelt and entertaining
I've often heard how so many people, mostly women love the movie "An Affair To Remember," and yet, I never cared much for it. I like the actors, Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, but the storyline and the idea of "an affair" didn't really appeal to me. I also didn't realize that it was a remake of "Love Affair" from 1939 starring Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer. I happened to see piece of it on a cruise ship and my husband and I recognized some of the dialog. And we both remember the reference to the movie in "Sleepless In Seattle." It was interesting to see this and I decided to borrow it from the library to watch and after watching it, I still didn't find "An Affair To Remember" very appealing. At the same time, I noticed the movie "Love Affair" with Warren Beatty and Annette Benning. I'm not really fans of either, but, for some reason, this movie caught my attention. It's possible it has appeal because here is an actor who was once known as a lifetime bachelor who has now married to an actress and raised four children and the chemistry with the woman he chose to spend his life with shows through. The music throughout the movie is beautiful and the main storyline follows its predecessor, but the dialog is fresh. I was glad to see that the "sensationalism" promoted by paparazzi is quelled by the quick wit of Mike Gambril paying a crew member to present a telegram to the photographer to send him on a wild chase preventing the "scandal" as in "An Affair To Remember." This movie gave me reason to like the story. I find that, even if I am not a fan of particular actors, I can enjoy a movie if they put their heart and souls into the project and not worry about impressing the viewers.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
Someone Owes Us a REFUND!!!!!!!
As we are all entitled to an opinion, my opinion of this movie is . . . IT WAS A WASTE OF TIME, A WASTE OF MONEY AND I FEEL RIPPED OFF BECAUSE IF WE WERE GIVEN A REFUND, THE THREE HOURS (RUNNING TIME AND TRAVEL TIME) and COST OF GAS would still be a WASTE!!!!! I am surprised that the "STARS" involved with this movie aren't embarrassed.
The story was terrible, disjointed. There was no chemistry between Indiana and Marion. Much of the "comical" visuals make it more of a comedy AND none of it was funny. Swinging monkeys?!? A huge swarm of killer ants?!? (it would have been witty to have a small scorpion bite her, but of course, then she couldn't show up again in the end if she got a lethal bite). A space ship?!? If I had known, not only would I not have gone to a theatre to see this, I wouldn't rent it either. We would have walked out within the first hour, but we were hoping it would get better. IT DIDN'T!!! It only got WORSE!!! We really felt robbed!
Eight Below (2006)
Sometimes you have to take a chance when you care so much
Great movie! Despite comments I've heard that it should have been dark due to the season, the occasional message regarding the time passing gave it the sense of survival it needed. A friend of mine won't watch it due to some of the reality it presents, but the reason that convinces the Dr. to inevitably help in the rescue is presented to him not by the main character, but by a member of his family. I thought Bruce Greenwood looked familiar and I found I had seen him in Double Jeopardy where he was the villain and in this film, there were times I did not like his character, but he does redeem himself. The dogs were magnificent and their interaction with each other was inspirational.
