The Orville: Blood of Patriots (2019)
Fantastic writing, engaging visuals, likeable, believeable characters
What more could you ask for in a hybrid comedic space opera? I thought they burned all their creative fuel on the previous story arc "Identity," typically the episode following an arc in sci-fi serials tends to be rather weak. And yet the Orville delivers even more class A entertainment as the tenous relationship between the Krill and the humans hangs in the balance.
Just got back from watching Captain Marvel and all I kept thinking on the way home was, if anything deserves a proper Motion Picture, it's the Orville, because there's a lot of turkeys out there on the big screen right now.
I know it will probably never happen, but I believe Orville:The Motion Picture would be truly amazing. Imagine an epic fight between the K-lons the Krill and the humans in Real 3D and Dolby 7.1. *Boom*
The Orville (2017)
First two episodes were awesome, third one kind of fell flat. Let's hope Orville doesn't get preachy.
Despite the wonderful job of the actor who plays "Bortus," S01E03 was hopefully not a harbinger of future screenplays. Seth McFarlane is right, there is a definite niche market for "funny" sci-fi that isn't too campy. We have everyone shoving their personal viewpoints down our throats day and night. I think that most of us are just tired of being "preached" to regarding societal-political agendas. And that was part of the genius of the original Family Guy, nothing and nobody were out of bounds for being roasted on the show. Family Guy was a time-honored vignette that made fun of all of us, viz, to some degree, we are all a little too full of ourselves so why not laugh at the mass-ludicrousness that we refer to as our "Modern world."
Things that will sink Orville: - Jumping on the "let's make fun of Trump" train. I know it's popular but we have everyone in major media doing it now and, honestly, even for liberal viewers, it's getting played out. - More 'preachy' or morally relativistic shows like S01E03. If you want to wrestle with juxtapositioned dilemmas on the show like DC Fontana did, then hire DC Fontana to write or at least rise to her level.
Things that will buoy Orville: - Keep up with the sardonic, down to earth humor. That's the bread and butter of the show. Most sci-fi has traditionally been rather 'stiff,' viewers forget that Star Trek TOS had quite a bit of humor interleaved within the main storyboard.
MAKE THE CHARACTERS PEOPLE WHOM I WISH REALLY EXISTED, and could meet in real life. Every character needs a 'superpower' or talent that makes them stand out, and makes me wish I could meet them in real life if they actually existed. What if you could meet La Forge, or Data, or Kirk or Scotty or any other of the Star Trek characters in real life? And why would I want to waste my time investing in these characters on the Orville?
There is a word. Of a certain ornithological variety. Perhaps you may have heard. It's in all the papers. What is the word, Captain? Can you get it out of your head? No?
